TURLEY HAD AN AIRPORT

This is some history of the old 'Stebbins Airport'.

Research on Frank Stebbins goes back to an article in the ‘Muskogee Daily Phoenix’, Sunday , May 12, 1946, showing ’Stebbins Electric & Supply’ as a new business in Muskogee. It also stated that he also owns and operates the ‘Stebbins Electric & Supply’ in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The article showed a photo of the inside of the company in Muskogee and another photo of Frank standing by Aeronca Chief plane that he used to fly back and forth between Tulsa and Muskogee.

The first indication of Frank Stebbins building an airport in Turley was from a news article shown below (no date). But it does make a statement in the article that the photo shows the proposed sewer district for Turley. You will notice the property shown as Stebbins Acres. We need only to determine date the sewer system began … and we would know it was after that date that Frank began to build the airport.

Next we have a photo of the airport with the date of August 1949. So we know that it was between 1946 and 1949 that the airport was established. My guess is that he had , at least, built the airstrip in Turley sometime in 1946 or 1947, mainly so he would have a place close to his business in Tulsa. Whether it was more than just a landing strip, (with no buildings), is unknown. The rest is basically a story in photos.

Next is two photos of the Bob Campbell Hanger. First was the framework of the hanger ... second, is the photo of it when it was finished.
Well, that's not exactly true. Eventually it had living quarters attached to the North side of the hanger. Don't have a photo of it when it was completely finished.

Next we have a photo of Frank's wife, Joanna. This is a 1927 photo of her standing in front of Linberg's Plane which was in for new cowling ... it says at the old McIntyre Airport. Location unknown. It is quite evident that she and Frank were in to flying very early.
