THE PHUKET BOAT RIDE
Ever the adventurous family, we decided to venture out on yet another boat ride.  This time, unlike our trip to Pulau Perhentian, we chartered a licensed boat in order to avoid any run-ins with the Thailand Coast Guard.  Our trip began early in the morning with a van ride across the island to the Phuket Yacht Club.  Some of the boats docked there had come from as far away as the east coast of the United States.  Our first destination was an area of limestone cliffs.  Our guide informed us that these formations were only found in four places in the world - a river in China, in this area of Thailand, off the coast of Cambodia, and in a small group off of the coast of Italy.

To the right are some of the views of our approach to the cliffs.  This is truly one of the most beautiful areas I have visited.  Some of the limestone cliffs form a ring like a giant doughnut.  The inside is reached through caves during low tide.  Once inside, the visitor finds himself in an isolated hidden lagoon.

Below are some of the cliffs up close.  Even in this hard terrain, trees found a way to cling precariously to the side of perfectly vertical cliffs.
The boat continued on to Ko Ping Kan.  This island is also known as James Bond Island as it was featured in "The Man with the Golden Gun".  Here you see us being the ever touristy family and having our picture taken in front of the antenna rock from the movie.  This rock is known as Ko Tapu (Nail Island).  It is a geologic oddity rising some 200 m (650 ft) out of the water.

BELOW:  Although our boat was properly licensed, it still provided a few moments of fun when one of the engines broke down in the middle of the trip.
