Coby's Surgery date was originally April 26, 2000. However, the beginning of April his stats started to drop and they changed his surgery to April 11th. We could tell he needed the second surgery. His fingers were always blue and his feet were purple. He would get tired after each feeding and need a little cat nap between feedings. Coby has always been a fussy baby so we couldn't tell where he was any fussier. However, Coby would be asleep and cry out like you pinched him. We just felt like he was uncomfortable and if he could talk he would tell us he was ready.
The first of April is when Coby's reflux became an issue. We had to get his reflux under control or they would have to postpone the surgery. Reflux is under control with new medicine so we should be on go for surgery.
The week before April 11th, Coby's surgeon called and said that they decided they wanted him to gain more weight and they postponed surgery until May 2nd. I just don't feel like weight is an issue. I feel like my son is ready for the surgery and I don't feel comfortable in waiting. However, who am I to argue with the surgeon. Weight has never been an issue. He weighs at 6 months 13 pounds and 11 ounces. He has almost doubled his birth weight.
We leave for Charleston on April 30th. Coby has to have lab work and tests done on May 1st. Coby hasn't been eating good this last week and they decided to admit him a day early to make sure he wasn't dyhydrated.
We were in Coby's room when the surgeon walked in. We haven't seen him since his cath back in January but the surgeon didn't start off his conversation with "How has everything been" instead we heard "we have three things to discuss". We were dumbfounded. What could possilby be wrong. We had received great reports at the cath, echo and all the doctor's appointment.
We find out that Coby's heart is 80% enlarged from the extra stain, his tricuspid valve is severely leaking and needs to be stitched and his blood platlet count is low. Coby is critical and needs to have surgery within a week regardless of the platlet count. Lots of test are run and they can not find out the reason for his platlet count. The doctor told us it would be a bloodbath to do the surgery but he would not live without the surgery either.
Amazingly they send us home from the hospital. My husband and I can not believe they would just send us home. Surgery has been postponed for three weeks until May 26th. Until then we have to hope Coby had some type of internal virus that ate his platlets and that the platlets will increase over the three week time. Also, they stopped all of his reflux medicines incase he had a reaction that ate his platletts.
