Coby passed away the day before his surgery. We called PCICU to check on our son and to find out how he was doing on Mother's Day at 8:15 am. The hospital where Coby was didn't allow visitors between 7:00 am - 8:30 am. The nurse told us that Coby had a good night. He was up and wasn't fussy. I hung the phone up and my husband and I were about to walk out of the hotel when the phone rang. It was 8:25 and we were told Coby went code and they had to intubate him. We were told to get to the hospital now. The hotel is only 1 block from the hospital. We were at PCICU by 8:30. The doctor meet us at the door and said they were doing chest compressions and we couldn't see him. The doctor came back outside around 8:50 and told us the doctors would like to see us in the conference room. I asked her "Is he alive" and she said "no". Coby died at 8:42 a.m. on Mother's Day morning.
We were told that Coby went quickly and wasn't in any pain. We decided not to do an autopsy. We thought Coby had been through enough. Coby died a day before surgery and we felt if he didn't want to be cut open for surgery why should we cut him open after death. All we know is that his heart beat slowed down and his oxygen saturation rate dropped and they could not bring either one up. The surgeon didn't know what caused his death and that perhaps Coby had a reflux attack.
