    11A:
      Shell brown or black with three white or yellow stripes running parallel to spine (stripes sometimes obscure). Found in Florida and southern Georgia only.
      Striped Mud Turtle, Kinosternon bauri

    11B:
      Shell olive or brown, smooth, without pattern. lower shell usually brownish. Found from eastern Texas to Maryland.
      Common Mud Turtle, Kinosternon subrubrum K. subrubrum Subspecies

    11C:
      Shell olive or brown. Lower shell yellowish, may have dark markings along scute edges. Found in western Texas and eastern New Mexico north to Kansas.
      Yellow Mud Turtle, Kinosternon flavescens K. flavescens Subspecies

    11D:
      Brown or black shell with strong keel. From Big Bend, Texas.
      Mexican Mud Turtle, Kinosternon hirtipes

    11E:
      Elongated shell with 1 or 3 keels. From southern Arizona.
      Sonora Mud Turtle, Kinosternon sonoriense
