    17A:
      Shell brown with keel along spine, lower shell yellow & black. Deep concentric growth rings intersect radiating grooves to form rough, wood-like texture on shell. Neck and base of legs bright orange in adults, dull orange in young. May have 2 faint yellowish stripes along sides of chin, head otherwise plain brown. Terrestrial. Protected in most states. Found from Maine southward to northern Virginia, also great lakes region. Babies aquatic, resemble adults.

      Shell brown, may have faint radiating markings on each scute. 1-2 reddish, orange or yellow blotches on each side of head. Shell fairly smooth. May have 2 faint yellowish stripes along sides of chin, head otherwise plain brown. Very secretive, seldom seen. Protected throughout entire range. Found from southern New York to Maryland. Isolated populations in northern New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and the Appalachian Mountains of Tennessee, Georgia, and the Carolinas. Semi-aquatic. Babies resemble adults.
