A:Shell tan or olive with circular markings, yellow crescent-shaped marking behind eyes, round spot on chin. Neck stripes do not connect to eye. Found from western Mississippi to eastern Texas, northward to southern Iowa.

B:Shell tan or olive with faint circular markings, keel brown or black, shell may also have black blotches or smudges. Yellow marking (not crescent-shaped) behind eyes, neck stripes connect to eye. Found along the Missouri river from Iowa to the Dakotas.

C:Shell tan or olive with faint circular markings, keel brown, shell may also have brownish smudges. Rectangular yellow spots behind eyes, neck stripes connect to eye. Additional spots below eyes and on chin. Found in the Mississippi and Ohio River systems northward to Illinois.

D:Shell dark olive or brown with thin yellow concentric lines, keel brown or black, shell also with brownish smudges. Oval yellow spots behind eyes, neck stripes connect to eye. Yellow bar on chin. Found in the Sabine River system of Texas and Louisiana.
