Are you a phony? Are you false or an
imposter? Do you try to be someone you
are really not? The word “phony” takes on many meanings. The most common word which could replace phony
is the word fake. If something is phony,
it is also fake.
However, the definition of someone or something that is phony is much
deeper than just being fake or counterfeit.
Being phony is pretending it is something it is not, thus depleting
uniqueness and individualism. A phony is
not true to oneself and is unreal, in other words, it is the epitome of the
cookie cutter standards.
Can something so
much apart of our lives be so phony?
Certain pop music is considered to be phony, because the artists, who
sing the popular songs, do not write the music.
An example of an “artist”, who uses this phony behavior, is Britney
Spears. As Britney Spears gathers fame, it is very ironic that someone behind
the scenes writes her music. Miss Spears
is phony because although she may have talent, she does not express herself in
a personal unique way through her music, which is what she is famous for. Without putting in all the hard work, it
takes a phony to stamp their name on an album in which only the voice is their
own.
In the fashion
world, many items can be crowned the title of phony. Clothing or accessories that are considered
knockoffs of more expensive or well known designers take the cake. Knockoffs of Prada, Fendi, Gucci, ect., are
phony because they are not the real deal.
Certain manufacturers hoping for some money decided that instead of
coming up with something bigger or better then what was already on the market,
it was easier to copy an existing item.
They use cheaper material and lower the price, still giving the buyer
the same affect as if they bought the real one.
By copying the successful product, the item is striving to be something
it is not, therefore defining ideal phoniness.
By being a
phony, the uniqueness of a person or an item’s characteristics are lost in the
shuffle of wanting to be successful and accepted. However, being a phony is no fun. To be who you are,
and to shake the image of the imposter is much better then to pretend to be
something you are not.
