Well, since this is a study of ANCIENT HISTORY we're not going to get very far along if we cannot READ the stories that have been preserved for us, right?
Perhaps you saw that Livy's writings were available in a Latin text, as well as that English translation you were reading. If you didn't notice it go back and look at this story in its original language.
In any study it is important to look at the original evidence so that you can see for yourself just what the judgements of other scholars are based upon. Only in this way can you be sure of the validity of the claims being made in any commentary.
