VoIP – a long expo

VoIP, a revolutionary new technology, allows you to make phone calls using a computer and the Internet. VoIP works on a simple technology. It converts voice signal from the telephone into a digital signal that travels over the Internet and then converts the analog signal back into a digital one at the other end. This facilitates the communication irrespective of the distance.

VoIP can instantly turn a normal Internet connection into a method to place free calls using the Internet. If you use the free VoIP software available freely in the web, you can cut down the telephone costs considerably. This also means the telephone company overheads are bypassed totally. When you place a VoIP phone call using a telephone instrument with an adapter, you get the normal dial tone and you need to dial the number.

With a VoIP phone, you can also place a phone call from a computer and a microphone. In this case the dialed number is placed using the keyboard and is routed to the destination through the cable modem. However there are some differences when you plan to replace your traditional telephone system with a VoIP phone. You need to keep in mind that some VoIP services don’t work during a power outage; they do not connect directly to emergency services through 911. Apart from this, the VoIP service providers might not provide directory assistance services.

Using VoIP one can place a phone call using any of the three methods. One can use an analog telephone adaptor (ATA) to place a call. The ATA allows one to connect a standard phone to the computer through an Internet connection for use with VoIP. VoIP calls can also be placed using an IP phone. These special phones resemble normal telephones, but instead of the normal RJ-11 phone connectors, they have the RJ-45 Ethernet phone connector. The IP phone connects directly to the router and includes all the necessary software and hardware to place a VoIP call directly.

A computer-to-computer VoIP call can also be placed using two computers, a microphone and a sound card. Many providers support these types of calls and provide software that are very low-priced and can be used with the VoIP software. These are very cheap too, as there is no extra fee, except the monthly ISP rental.
