HAIRWING CADDIS |
|
|
|
This is an all around caddis pattern that works well in almost any situation where there are hatching caddisflies. It's very easy to tie and the body and wing color can be changed to match local hatches. This is basically a Troth style caddis without the palmered hackle. A underwing of Plastic Canvas Yarn was added to add a little sheen to the pattern. I believe it makes a difference. |

Step 1: Fix your hook to the vise and run your thread down to the bend of the hook. |

Step 2: Apply your dubbing forming a tight tapered rope. Do not apply too much dubbing, less is better and more can always be added later if necessary. |

Step 3: Wind the dubbing rope towards the eye of the hook forming a tight tapered body. Stop the dubbing 1-1/2 eye lengths from the eye of the hook. |

Step 4: Tie in your Plastic Canvas Yarn or similar underwing with the wing extending slightly past the bend of the hook. Trim the excess yarn and make a few more tight wraps to secure the wing. |

Step 5: Prepare the deer hair wing by selecting a bunch about the diameter of an ordinary pencil and stack the ends in a hair stacker. Tie in the deer hair with the tips extending slightly past the bend of the hook, but just short of the yarn underwing. Now make two or three tight thread wraps on both sides of the butt section of the hairwing to lock the wing into place. |

Step 6: Wrap the thread forward to the eye of the hook and whip finish. Finish the fly by trimming the butt section at the same angle of the hook eye. the length of the butt section is up to you, but I usually cut it to be about 2 times the eye length. A drop of head cement on the head and wing wraps and your finished. |
