CLEAR WING SPINNER, RUSTY |
This is an all around favorite that imitates a variety of mayfly spinners. The general pattern can be tied in any color and size to match the hatch. It is easy to tie and is a must in any Pennsylvania fly box. |
Hook: Mustad 94840, Size 16 Thread: Danville's 6/0, Rusty Brown Tail: Microfibetts, Red Brown Body: Superfine Dubbing, RustyBrown Wing: White Plastic Canvas Yarn. |

Step 1 Insert the hook into the vise and run the thread to the bend of the hook. Next dub a very small amount of Superfine to the thread and create a small ball just ahead of the bend of the hook. This ball should be very small in size so that you will be able to create a nice tapered body. |
Step 2 Wind the thread 4-5 wraps forward toward the eye of the hook. Select 4 Microfibetts and make sure the tips are even. Tie in your fibetts directly on top of the hook, the tail length should be equal to the length of the hook shank. |
Step 3 When you have the fibetts tied in directly on top of the hook, use your fingernail to seperate the fibbets by pressing down directly in front of the dubbing. The fibetts should split evenly to each side of the dubbed ball. Start wrapping the thread back toward the dubbed ball manipulating the fibetts as needed to put them in the correct position. When the thread wraps reach the base of the dubbed ball and the fibetts are in place, place a couple of tight wraps there to lock them in place. |
Step 4 Next, add dubbing to your thread until you have a nice tapered rope. Wind the rope forward to create a neat tapered effect to your body. You should stop 1-1/2 eye lengths from the eye of the hook. |
Step 5 Add your wing of Plastic Canvas Yarn by using figure eight wraps starting with light wraps and get tighter as the wing goes into position. Dub a small amount of Superfine to the thread and continue to figure eight wrap until you produce a nice taper to the thorax of the fly. One or two wraps behind the wing helps to create this effect. |
Step 6 Now wind the thread to the eye of the hook, form a small tapered head and whip finish. Cut the length of the wing to equal the shank length of the hook. Head cement your fly and your finished. |
