(1999)

Flaming Heart !

Cast: Wong Hei, Esther Kwan, Louis Koo, Jade Leung, Chin Ka Lok, Cheng Zhi Sing, Lee San San

My Rating: HHHHH

Burning Flame is definitely my favourite TVB series of all time. I think it's one of the best in the 90s and maybe one of the best ever. Burning Flame is very unique in its own way...It's a drama/action/ comedy and even a tearjerker. It was about family, love, career and friendship. Especially the friendship here is very very touching. It's definitely a MUST- SEE, you won't regret watching it at all.

The Nam San Tigers

The Nam Sam Tigers was a very touching friendship of these three guys. They were friends since they were in school. They grew up together and even worked together. As Ah But said in his suicide note, he was the weakest among three of them. When Ah But got into troubles,he would ask Dai Hing for help. If Dai Hing was in trouble, he would go to TinYau. And if TinYau was in trouble,he can take care of that himself because he was the toughest guy among them. Anyway, there were bad times and it got worse when Ah But decided to kill himself. Ah But wasn't a really good guy or a smart one or a success or anything he was just himself -- never been so good at things, finally he was lost. He couldn't talk to his best friends when he faced the worst time in his life. The woman he loved left him for her old boyfriend and brought her child that he loved like his own son with her. He involved in dirty business. He was chased by the mafia and the police. Then he went to see Pak ( Louis's character,he had never talk to Pak much before ,but Pak was the only one that "unable to walk away".) At the hospital Pak was also upset with his life, didn't notice how sad or bad Ah But felt at that time.I listened to what Ah But said it was so depressing ,then he left and went to his old school ..walking around, thinking of the time he was with his best friends Dai Hing and Tin Yau, playing basketball..then he missed the shot. He jumped off the building. Dai Hing and Tin Yau and the firemen came too late. You can see Dai Hing hugged him and cried so hard, while Tin Yau was by his side. It was really sad. Dai Hing was so painful because one of the main reason that Ah But killed himself was his own sister Mei Lok and also himself.

Pak Name :Lau Hoi Pak

Marco
Name : Lau Hoi Yut ( Marco )
Family :He was raised by Pak's father. He never knew that he wasn't the real son for many years.
Personality :Ambitious, Jealous, Greedy

Best Friends : None
Dream girl : Lok Hiu Chui

Lok Hiu Fong Name :Lok Hiu Fong
Family :Father, mother and a sister Lok Hiu Chui and a step brother Tin Yau. He didn't get along well with his father, because he thought his father was a loser and that he didn't love his mother.
Personality :Hard working, suspicious, competitive
His Reputation:He was a well-known firefighter because of his great physical abilities
Dream girl : Sam Pik Yiu
Turning Point : It started with he felt that he was getting old. At one time he competed with Pak and Tin Yau and he lost, and he was rejected by Sum Pik Yiu (Esther), then he thought that she and Tin Yau had something together. Moreover, his mother was mentally-illed all of sudden he turned to be a bad guy and involved in dirty business.

Esther Name :Sum Pik Yiu
Family :She lived with her grandfather, a stingy mother and a teenage sister. It was quite a happy family.
Personality :Weak in the beginning, and always thought of herself as an unlucky person. Anyway, her stength was that she never gave up. Quite determined and more mature in the end.
Why did she become a firefighter: She lost her job because of the economic crisis in HK, then her friend suggested her to enter the Firefighter Training Program.
Best Friends : Lok Hiu Chui , the one who suggested her to join the training program
Her Love Life : Before she entered the training program, She was dating a cop ( played by Mark Kwok) but he cheated on her, so they broke up. She liked Tin Yau but then she realized that he liked Tang Zhang Yuet. By the way, Lok Hiu Fong liked her....but finally she got together with Tin Yau

Chui Name :Lok Hiu Chui
Family : Her father, mother, an older brother Lok Hiu Fong and a step brother,Tin Yau
Personality :Although she was adventurous like Pak ,she prefered working in the country side to working in the city for some excitement. She was also a devoted girlfriend.
Hobbies: Just like Pak she loved mount-climbing and riding motorcycle
Best Friends : Sam Pik Yiu
I really feel sorry for her character. Sometimes she felt that Pak cared about his brother more than he cared about her , but she still loved him. I felt so bad about the way Ah Pak treated her in some parts of the serie. Such as what he did when he found out that she was raped...he acted like it was her fault and he was very inconsiderated. Her death scene was also very sad.

Chui and Pak Chui and Marco

Review:
TeamI remember when I rented BF, I didn't expect anything because at that time TVB released a series like Healing Hands which was a disappointment (to me). Healing Hands was supposed to be something about doctors and medical stuff, but it turned out to be an extremely boring love story (no offense - just my opinion) So..I thought this BF may turned out to be another LOVE story without mentioning on their profession. Well...I was wrong. This series focused on their career from the first day that they entered the Firefighter Training School. It was very interesting and fresh because TVB had never done this kind of series before, plus it was funny.

   - - The Storyline - -

Freinds! The storyline was sooo good. It was definitely a tearjerker, but you can get a good laugh from it, too. You can see the characters' development here. Some characters learned to be more matured as time passed by. The family, love and friendship were great, especially the friendship of Nam San Tigers which was really impressive and so touching esp. Ah But incident. In fact I'm not the kind of person who cries when watching movies but this scene made me cry every time I watch it. The Nam San Tigers can make you laugh so hard and also make you cry which made you feel like you were one of them. Lok Tin Yua's mother's death scene was also touching. The big fire scene in the ending was so exciting that it kept me feel uncomfortable and feel really bad watching it. The speech of Lok Tin Yau in the end was also quite touching. Anyway, there were something I don't like about this serie too : There were TOO much of coincidence or fate that got to do with the characters. For example, Lau Hoi Pak character, he always got into the troubles almost ALL the time. Plus, I think TOO many people died in this series.

   - - The Cast - -

Wong Hei : What a great job he did in this one ! He can be really funny and serious. I used to don't like him but after I watched Burning Flame..Wow! I think he's a good actor. Especially in Tin Yau's mother's death scene, I think he portrayed the role of Tin Yau really well.
Rescue !
Esther Kwan : I think her character was nothing special, anyway she did a fine job here.

Louis Koo : His performance was ok. I think he was better than when he was in Cold Blood Warm Heart and other series. Lau Hoi Pak was a kind of character that Louis always gets - - arrogant, a man with the past , cool and something like that.

Jade Leung : She acted as Louis's devoted girlfriend quite well. Her acting was ok...I mean she can be good without action scenes like those movies that she always did.

Chin Ka Lok : He was the funniest person in the serie. I always laughed when he and Ah But were together and those scenes with Cherry Chan were great.

Lee San San : I'm glad that her role wasn't so important. I just think that her acting wasn't up to standard yet. I think she was better than she was in Untraceable Evidence, though

Cherry Chan : she was funny especially the scenes with Chin Ka Lok. She also did well in drama scenes.
