After all the controversy, it's just too bad that the movie being attacked and subsequently defended was really not all that great. In fact, parts of it are downright awful. Kevin Smith, who brought us the great works Clerks and Chasing Amy, pretty much fails in his attempts at making a thoughtful comedy about Catholicism. Parts of his script are great but the direction is subpar as is some of the acting.
Dogma is about two fallen angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) who find a loophole (via one of many plotholes in the story that's sorta kinda covered up but not really) back into heaven. Anyway, a woman named Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) is visited by an angel (Alan Rickman, the best performance in the film) with a mission: stop the angels from entering the loophole and thus destroying all existence. She meets up with others to help her (Chris Rock, bad performance; Salma Hayek, good performance) as well as a demon (Jason Lee in a horrendously bad performance with horrendously bad dialogue).
This film is such a mixed bag. The angels Bartleby and Loki go on a killing rampage for no apparent reason, things are explained a full hour after the audience pondered them and there is a monster made of excrement that serves no purpose whatsoever. The editing and lighting are really, really bad and the film is overlong. However, Jay and Silent Bob save the day as well as do many very witty lines. However, my advice to Kevin Smith: keep on writing but try a new director next time. **
