The Television Transcript Project : TVTP Guide

 Recommended TV Reading
If you like interesting theories, read these magazine articles.
(If you were looking for something else, check out the links page.)

"She Wants Her TV! He Wants His Book!" Harper's Magazine, March 1991, pg. 44-55. Camille Paglia (pro-TV) and Neil Postman (anti-TV) have a conversation over dinner about TV. I never had a favorite magazine article before I read this. Enjoy!

"The Curse of Literacy" Utne Reader, Sept-Oct 1998, pg. 71-5. Leonard Shlain describes how the written word and images (TV, photography, art) promote two different, rich, traditions/approaches. He shows how this works and how TV has had a positive effect on society. He effectively reminds you of the positive benefit of the written word as well.

"The Triumph of the Prime-Time Novel," by Charles McGrath, New York Times Magazine, 22 Oct 1995, pg. 52-9+. The best TV these days is better than the movies these days.
