Kathleen Roesler-Houf
After graduating from HHS, I attended Hannibal Lagrange College for 2 years. During my second year I taught half-day kindergaren at Lutheran School. I met John at HLG, and when he returned from service in Sept. 1952, we were married in October. While John was in service, I taught first grade at Eugene Field School and attended summer school at Missouri University as well as taking correspondence and extension courses. I graduated from MU in August 1953 and 3 weeks later we had twins. I was a stay-at-home mom, and then in 3 years, we had another daughter. When our girls started school, I started my teachng career in Mexico, MO. However that was a short career as in 3 years our son, Jeff, was born, so I again became a stay-at-home mom until he started nursery school. I then taught kindergarten for 25 years.
I retired in May 1991 and have loved every minute of it. John had retired in 1989, and we have been on the go ever since. We have a theme song of "On the Road Again". Pam and Marilyn (our twins) married twins in a double wedding. They both live in Mexico. Laurie is married and lives in South Carolina. Jeff is single and is in Kansas City.
We have one grand daughter, Donna, who some of you have met as she has been to our luncheon at Fiddlesticks once or twice. She graduated this spring from HLG with a degree in Secondary Business Education and is now looking for a teaching position. It is discouraging since teaching positions are few and far between. We also have two grand sons in SC. Ross just graduated from high school and plans to attend a Technical College and take courses in Computer Landscaping. Robert is 15 and is a sophomore in high school.
We enjoy camping from April until Oct. with a group of friends from the Mexico area. We also go to SC a couple times a year, and my brother and sister-in-law live in Colorado Springs, so we get together with them some time during the summer. Then after Christmas, we head for TX. We spend 3 months there. Two of the many highlights of that trip are spending time on South Padre Island as well as getting together with Ann and Don Atkins and Joan and Dan Bastian.
October 12, 2002 we celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary. We celebrated with our family in July, so Laurie and her family could be with us also. For those of you who cannot be with us at our monthly luncheons, you just don't know how much fun you miss. A special thanks to the ones who came up with the idea.
