Five young creative forces form the fusion-generated funk of Incubus. They began their groove young as they are in Calabasas, California. Vocalist Brandon Boyd and drummer Jose Pasillas went to elementary school together. In middle school - 8th grade, they met guitarist Mike Einzinger, who spent most of his time playing guitar in his bedroom. Later in high school, they became friends with bassist Alex Katunich, who had just been kicked out of Jazz Band at that time for not knowing how to read music. In 1991, the four friends, in a garage, decided to put their musical talents together -- thus, Incubus was formed.
(Trivia: Brandon, aside from being the lead singer, is also the percussionist of the band. He plays an interesting Aboriginal wind instrument called didgendoo.)
They began playing in small parties and all-age clubs in the San Francisco Valley and at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip. And after years of playing, in 1994 the band released "Closet Cultivation," their first three-track demo tape. After this, they continued to write songs and to jam in live shows. Until one day, Mark Shoffner, a tour manager, approached them with an offer to record in his friend's studio, no strings -- or contracts -- attached. Ten months later, Incubus released their first full length album, on their own label, called "Fungus Amongus."
DJ Lyfe then saw Incubus play live and offered the band to use some of his hip-hop tracks. The band was skeptical at first, but Lyfe soon joined them after one rehearsal. The unique sound and high energy of Incubus attracted attention from label heads. After a bidding war among record labels, Immortal Records emerged as the winner by understanding that Incubus is a touring live band, not a hit-single sensation, and by intent on building its following from ground up.
To start off the new year, Incubus released its EP "Enjoy Incubus" on 1997. After the album's release, they went to Europe for a tour with labelmates Korn. They played in front of more people and gained more and more fans. Then, the band collaborated with DJ Greyhound to produce the song "Familiar" for the soundtrack of the movie Spawn.
(Trivia:Brandon's dad Chuck, a former model of Salem cigarette billboard, is rumored to be the mustached man in the band's album cover.
Also, that explains Brandon's good looks - it is obviously inherited from his dad.)
After touring, Incubus released the album "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." at the same year. They jumped on a tour with 311 and Sugar Ray, though they were only supposed to stay with them for the first leg of the tour. But things went very well and the response from the crowd was so great that they were asked to stay on for the remainder of the tour. Fans of 311 and Sugar Ray were amazed with Incubus. The tour put the band into more limelight and gained them enormous amount of fans.
(Trivia:"S.C.I.E.N.C.E.," according to Brandon, either stands for "Social Chronology Includes Everyone, Neanderthals, Cannibals, Everyone" or "Sailing Camatarans is Every Nautical Captain's Ecstacy.")
In February of 1998, the band asked DJ Lyfe to leave the band after deciding that he could no longer add to Incubus' being a productive family. A friend recommended that they check out DJ Chris Kilmore, whose music style and attitude in life blended with that of the band's. Thus, he joined the band permanently.
They toured behind "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." for two years with other bands including Limp Bizkit, Ozzy Osborne, Cold, Black Sabbath and others. They sold 200,000 units of "S.C.I.E.N.C.E." and "Enjoy Incubus" combined. The band came home and wrote a new album for eight weeks.
After a collective nervous breakdown and relentless work in the studio, Incubus released "Make Yourself" in 1998. Right after the album's release, the band headed for a tour with Primus and Buckethead. Their single "Pardon Me" became an instant hit that was being played all over the country. They went on the road with Epic labelmates, Ultraspank. They hit gold status in 2000 with the success of their first single, "Pardon Me," and its new acoustic version. Meanwhile, their next single "Stellar" received more airplay and stayed in the charts for a couple of weeks.
(Trivia: Why "burst into flames" (from "Pardon Me")? According to Brandon, he was looking through a picture in Life magazine of someone who had spontaneously combusted. Being in a somewhat emotional stress that time, he related to the picture in a sort of silly but ironic way. He thought he would explode any moment.)
Upon realizing how the fans loved the acoustic versions of songs from "Make Yourself," Incubus released a 6-song EP titled "When Incubus Attacks Vol.1," only pressing 100,000 copies. It scored #41 on the Billboard Album Charts. And on October 2000, "Make Yourself" went Platinum after selling a million copies.
Due to the growing number of fans looking for their first independent album "Fungus Amongus," the band released a re-issue of the album with the same artwork and track listing as before. To end the year 2000, the band also went on a tour with Deftones and Taproot.
To start off year 2001, Incubus released their third single "Drive" It quickly rose to #1 spot on the Modern Rock Charts. They took a break for a while during the first part of 2001 before returning to California to start recording their new album. In the middle of the year, "Make Yourself" went Double Platinum, and the video of "Drive" was nominated for an MTV Video Music Award for Best Group Video. Unfortunately, they lost that award to the pop group N'Sync.
In October 2001, the long-anticipated follow up album, "Morning View," was released. Their sound has grown from the crunch of heavy rock to a more refined, melodic sound. There are a variety of rhythms in this album, from the eclectic dynamics of heavy metal from "Nice to Know You" and "Under My Umbrella" to quiet and dreamy mood of "11 AM" and "Aqueous Transmission" Their first single, "Wish You Were Here," along with its video, has instantly gained following from the listeners all over. The band has recorded live from the Sony Studios the "Morning View Sessions" which was, and is still, being aired on MTV. It will also be released as a DVD early this year.
(Trivia: "Morning View" was taken from a street that was meaningful to the them. The mansion where it was recorded is on Morning View Street in Malibu, CA.)
Definitely, Incubus has come a long way and has proved that their brand of music is here to stay. Not only are passion for music and honest expression of feelings became important instruments for the band's success, their natural and zany friendship all these years also played a significant part in keeping Incubus together and in producing great music.
So don't blink... or else you'll miss Incubus' beat.
(Trivia:The only member who hasn't had dreadlocks was Jose. Believe it or not, all the others had their hair dreadlocked long ago... we might have just missed that phase.)
