Pixel art is a sublime form of expression, that ends up with a fully re-useable product that can be put to use in games, applications and even websites. Pixel art is often used in many games, past and present. Some notable games are Final Fantasy (up to FF6), Gameboy/Gameboy Advance games, and even the computer games Starcraft and Age of Empires (1 and 2).
A skilled pixel artist can draw up a item or sprite in a matter of minutes. A whole set could hit a few hours if the artist is focused and palettes are prepared correctly. Although 3D has begun to take-over the game industry, pixel art is still prominent with indies (non-corporate/smaller game development teams). Among that, pixel art can be used to create logos, textures, and even menu skins. There will still be Mobile Phone games that are 2D (Many of which are limited to the DoMoCo phones in Japan). A pixel artist could even create the entire graphics for a site (not that I did, due to time and space limitations). Pixel art prices for a single item can base for 50USD+, although many artists will set a rate around 30USD per hour and additional prices for the amount of pixels and resolution that the item takes up.
There are non-commercial pixel artists that make pixel art for free, usually for friends or free use. Most of these so-called pixel artists are, sadly, editors and rippers. These individuals take graphics from other games (usually commercial games such as Rockman or Mario), distribute them as sprites and demand credit. Many of these individuals "edit" to originals to an extent where they cannot be recognized anymore, and claim to have made these from scratch. A notable user that does this is known by the alias of zanyzora. Other notable non-commercial pixel artists are ccoa, Tana, and Showkaizer of RMXP.org, with Showkaizer possibly being the best and known for the creation of the pixel art character style Half Kaizer (HK). It is currently rumored that Showkaizer is working on a pixel art tutorial Creating Textures with Pixels.
There are many ways to create pixel art, although not all of them are successful. It's up to you to find the method that you work best at. What are you waiting for? Use the links!
