Nonprofit organizations live in terror of losing their nonprofit status because they might accidentally commit lobbying. Lobbying is almost a dirty word among smaller nonprofits. Better to avoid talking to congressmen and senators altogether than make a mistake and get in trouble.

So, what does the IRS really say about lobbying and 501(c)3's? You might be surprised at how easy it is to lobby legally. As representatives of the people we serve, it is our duty to inform our legislators about the needs and challenges facing our clients. We're short changing them if we don't do it.

There's a simple one page IRS form that hardly anyone knows about that protects you and allows you to spend money on lobbying your legislators (not just "educating"). This is important stuff. Lobbying is an incredibly effective way to get things done and is a great way to make sure you get in line for the money you need as an organization. Lobbying is also cheap considering the potential benefits to those you serve if you you are able to influence legislation in their favor.

Contact me if you'd like to schedule a free 20-40 minute presentation on Lobbying for Nonprofits for your East Texas civic group, professional association, church or community service agency. Speaking fees and travel expenses may apply to engagements outside the Tyler/Longview, Texas area.
