Henry McCoy's father worked at a nuclear power plant where he was exposed to large amounts of radiation during an accident. He was unharmed but the radiation effected his genes, which caused his son, Henry, to be born a mutant.
Because of Henry's enhanced agility, strength and speed, he became a star football player as a teen. He drew the attention of Charles Xavier who was searching for mutants to form the X-Men, and also a criminal name El Conquistador. El Conquistador kidnapped Henry's parents in an attempt to force him to help in El Conquistador's criminal activities. With the help of Xavier and the X-Men, Henry rescued his parents and joined the X-men, taking the name 'Beast'.
Beast completed his doctoral studies under the tutelage of Xavier and decided to leave the X-Men to take a job as a genetic researcher at the Brand Corporation. He developed a serum which acted as a catalyst for activating latent mutations, which he took himself. On drinking the serum, Beast underwent extreme physical changes. He grew blue fur all over his body, his ears became large and pointed and his canine teeth became larger so that they resembled fangs. His natural enhanced physical abilities were also increased.
