Drake was born with the latent ability to freeze moisture in the air around him. As he became older he came more aware of his ability. Believing that the town and his family would not understand his ability he kept it a secret for many years. One night he was walking home with a date when they were attacked by the town bullies. One of the group held Drake while the groups leader tried to force Drake's date to go with him. Drake used his power to encase the group's leader in ice. The story got around town and the townspeople became enraged and formed a lynch mob. They broke into Drake's home and although Drake used his power to fight them off there were too many so the town sherrif took him into custody for his own protection
Charles Xavier heard of the incident and sent Cyclops, the lone member of the X-Men at the time, to recruit Drake. Cyclops broke into the cell holding Drake, but Drake refused to leave. The two began to fight using their powers. The fight ended up on the street, witnessed by many townspeople. The two young mutants quickly used all of their energy and were captured by the lynch mob. They would've been hung by the angry mob, but Xavier arrived and used his psychic ability to manipulate the mob into releasing Cyclops and Drake.
Drake's parents agreed to let him live at Xavier's school for mutants. Xavier used his psychic ability to erase all knowledge of Drake's powers from his parent's minds and also to erase all memories of the incident from the minds of the townspeople. Drake joined the X-Men and took the name 'Iceman'.
