Builder Name: Douglas Edwards
Inducted: 2005 (Nominated by TWF Fans)
Douglas Edwards was announced as the first person to be inducted into the "Builders" category which was established by Mr. BIG in 2005 upon his appointment as TWF Managing Director.
Argueably, without Doug, the TWF would have ceased to have existed a long time ago. Edwards's involvement began with the TWF right at the very beginning. He provided some initial capital for the TWF to hold it's initial shows and contract it's first batch of superstars. That money was well spent by the TWF, and it included hiring his grandson Mr. BIG. However, in late 2000, the TWF ran into some major financial trouble, running up a mass of debts and oweing a lot of money to venues in fees. It appeared that the TWF would go bankrupt and would be sold off and would be likely to lose it's name and would be a vastly different place.
After some advice from his grandsons Mr. BIG & Mr. Edwards, Edwards launched an 11th hour bid to save the TWF from it's impending doom. It eventually worked, using some of his life savings and money from his very successful steel business to keep the TWF afloat. His only wish that he re-couped his investment. As the TWF came into 2002, he decided to sell his interest in the TWF around March 2002 after many shows were cancelled and feared his inital investment would not succeed. He was too premature with his decision however, as the TWF had a splendid period of growth in 2002, culminating in Summer Break 2002 being perhaps one of the highest grossing Pay-Per-Views in professional wrestling history.
Marz, as well-documented, became concerned with his lack of backstage power after Mr. BIG's much heralded return from his US "crusade" and formed TECW. Of course, when that occured, there was only one person fit to run the TWF - Doug. He was installed as Managing Director and Head of the Board unanimously by the rest of the board at the time and began his 2nd reign on the board. This was to be much more successful than the first.
Doug's on-screen appearances were very limited. When he did make his few appearances, the crowd stood to cheer and bow in his presence. He was not seen without his faithful bodyguards, ready to protect one of the most powerful and richest men in all of wrestling. Doug, however, wasn't getting any younger and since mid-2004 was contemplating retirement. In January 2005, he handed over the reigns to his grandson, Mr. BIG, who was appointed MD by members of the TWF Board. Doug made one more appearance after that, at Against All Odds where he announced the Hall of Fame 2005 induction ceremony.
Doug's induction was well-deserved. Without him, it is without question, the TWF would have not existed and he must be proud that his initial investment has worked so well and brought joy to so many people.
