~ Suggestions for Writers ~
A Practical Guide to the Craft

~ Books on Writing, Editing, and Critiquing ~

~ Bird by Bird: Some Instructions on Writing and Life ~
This woman is an incredibly evocative writer. Her suggestions on bringing your work to life are spot on and enjoyable to read.

~ The Elements of Style, Fourth Edition ~
I really disliked this book when I had to use it at university. I still dislike it because it's so academically verbose and unwieldy (to me). But it's got its uses.

~ The First Five Pages: A Writer's Guide to Staying Out of the Rejection Pile ~
Lukeman is a literary agent. A damn good one. This book is essential reading for any author wanting insight into transitioning from author to published author.

~ On Becoming a Novelist ~
I have been in love with Gardner ever since receiving and reading Grendal as a young teenager. His style is sparse yet complex and evocative. He manages to say the most with the least. His advice on writing is as invaluable as reading his novels.

~ On Writing ~
Like him or hate him, King is the epitome of an incredible storyteller. He writes stories that people find enthralling despite the quality of the writing itself. He is capable of skillful writing too - it just hasn't always appeared in his work over the years (probably due to his personal demons). He has much to teach about writing a novel - and this book is a good starting point.

~ Self-Editing for Fiction Writers, Second Edition: How to Edit Yourself Into Print ~
The title says it all. Once upon a time your manuscript would get edited by the publishers. These days? No time for that. They want polished finished works that are marketable and grab attention. Listen to the advice these authors (a publisher and editor) have to offer.

~ Woe Is I: The Grammarphobe's Guide to Better English in Plain English ~
White and Strunk unbuttoned after a glass or two of whiskey! This is easier to get through and just as excellent.

~ Handy and Helpful Websites ~

~ Free English Language Online Tools - This site helps you determine how readable your manuscript is. It points out sentences that could be a problem, calculates the average Grade reading level as per the Fog Index, and highlights words that maybe problematic.
~ Using English - Text Content Analysis Tool - Another very handy tool to check your manuscript for readability and density.
