Fears of a Woman

by Christine "Belladonna' Demerath

Gently climbing back into bed Jean gazes at her husband's biceps. He stirs a bit, but sleeps on. She moves her hands over his chest ever so carefully. It had been nearly a month since he'd been injured and it's still paining him. He'd try to hide it from her, but she knew better .She considered herself lucky that Scott was sleeping in until almost 10 everyday. He seems more relaxed than normal. Not just because the pain has faded, but because he doesn't have to worry. He's not responsible for anyone, not anymore. Ever sense they reached their home in Alaska she had taken care of him, that is up until last week. Even before that he had tried to do the chores, but Jean had refused to let him. This had created some tension between the two. Scott had always been in charge of himself and others, always able to take care of himself. Jean knew what he was going though, but she'd be dammed if she'd let him raise his voice at her. There had only been two arguments since they arrived here. That was enough for both of them. But since Scott started moving around and doing things he stopped worrying about the team and Jean, about being helpless. Ever since then him and Jean were back as they had always been, happy. Up until last night Jean allowed nothing physically romantic to happen between them. She hadn't wanted to hurt him anymore then he was. But last night she gave into her lover's caresses and strokes. Carefully she tries to shake her husband awake. "Scott?" He stirs but doesn't wake. 'Good I don't have to worry about him seeing me like this. I better get cleaned up; I don't know how to tell him, yet. But I've got too soon or he'll find out himself. Maybe today. I know he'll be mad, maybe not for telling him as much but for doing all the work and going on that last mission. He's finally started to gain control again, but I know he still hurts. He's been worried about me and to tell the truth so am I.'

"Scott." Jean calls over her shoulder.

"Yes, hon?"

Jean bits her lips as she thinks it's kind of become a habit over they ears when she loses herself in though.

"Jean?" Scott asked from behind the refrigerator door, now peeking his head over. "Jean what's the matter?" He noticed his wife's expression.

"Nothing," she shakes her head to clear it. She flashes him a sexy smile; "How about we go out tonight? Are you up to it, if not we could just start a fire and relax a bit." Jean gets up from the table and walks over to her husband.

He grimaces, but his expression soon turns to a warm smile. "I'm up to it hon, but I think we should stay home and try that fireplace idea." He kisses her lightly on the head. "Now are you sure there isn't something you'd like to tell me?"

"It can wait until tonight, Scott."

"Are you sure?" He takes her hands in his and looks at her. She nods.

"Mmm.." Jean sighs in pleasure. "This is the juiciest steak I've had in a long time." She turned to look at the kitchen door and shouted out, "Scott, you're a great cook you know."

Smiling himself he popped his head back in. "Thanks, hon. Now, what was that you wanted to talk to me about?"

"Scott.. I..." She looks back up to him, trying her hardest to keep a brave front up. "Here sit down." She doesn't want to do this, the even was so great, but she knows that's just another way to avoid it. "I've got something to tell you."

"Go on, hon. I'm here for you, you know that."

"Scott.. I. I'm pregnant."

"You mean..." his face light up with a smile all father's should have. "I'm going to be a father!" He beamed and hugged his wife lifting her up. He'd been a father before, but this time he saw it differently. He didn't have to fight anymore and this time he'd be there for his wife. And finally for his child. He smiled and kissed his wife. "I  love you." At that moment he noticed the look in Jean's eyes, the fear wasn't because she didn't know what to expect there was something else wrong, he panicked. "What's the matter? Is it the baby? You? What's the matter?"

"Scott, don't worry, everything is going to be fine." No it isn't, she thought. Her eyes let Scott in on what she was thinking, she had been hiding her thoughts from him for a while now, but at the moment he shouldn't sense a thing between their repor, bring him ever more so close to the edge of his emotions." Jean, what's the matter? I see it in those eyes. What's happening?" He was scared, more then he'd ever been before. He had what he wanted; he couldn't give it up now. Things where in perspective, why did it have to be blown apart once more.

"Clam down, Scott. Please. This is important."

He nodded weakly.

"The baby should be find, I'll go see Moria to make sure. But there is something else you have to know..." She takes his hands and looks him in the eyes. "I don't know how... but the Phoenix.. the Phoenix's powers are somehow... they.." He pulls her close into a hug as she lets out a sob. "...oh Scott I'm so scared. For me, for the baby, and for you." Her sobs rake though her as she speaks and holds onto Scott for dear life.
