Boxing
for Cardio!!!!! by Tony Wilder of T-Wild Training |

Style and form is a bit lacking as you will see, as long as you know what to look for. I will give a short explanation after each picture shown. The day these pics where taken the main goal was to train as hard as possible to get the best cardio session in. What the pictures tell me is that my form/style went out the door just to train as hard as I could. Definitely need to work on that. My choice of gloves to use when hitting the mitts are Ringside International Training gloves @18 ounces each.
Punch Mitt Training
In the above pic I'm preparing to throw a straight right. The
thing is, I have way to much weight placed on my right leg to throw it
properly and with snap/power. Also, hands need to be brought up a
couple of inches and with a bit more space between them.
The biggest mistake shown here in this pic is that my left has nearly
dropped all the way down to my waist line!!! Holy crap, if I was
sparing or in a fight I would be on the ground spitting out a tooth from
a right hook or straight right! Even though this session was more
for cardio but that is NO excuse for the left hand to be dropped so far
down.
In this pic you can easily see just how off my body is and the amount
of power generated from my right hand is going to be lacking in comparison
to what it could be if thrown properly. Held the left hand a little
more in position this time though but still about five inches to low which
leaves me wide open to a counter punch.
Simple combo is being shown above...left hook followed by a straight
right which can easy put the lights out! Body position here is quite
good and the flow of the punches is going very good. When throwing
a hook to the head the knuckles are horizontal to the ground and vertical
when going to the ribs or body. But that doesn't mean that that is
written in stone because I personally like to keep the knuckles vertical
in both punches.
Note: As you can see from the look on my training partners face
the body guard does not completely take the "punch" out of what I throw.
:) But that's a good thing because it gets the body prepared for
when the real thing is coming your way.
Throwing a right hook to the body...notice how the hand is positioned,
knuckles with the ribs. Again, you can see I leave myself wide open
for a counter punch but when doing a cardio session it's easy to forget
about keeping the hands up for protection.
That pad is three inches thick but you can still feel a lot of the punch
coming through it. Now imagine getting hit without it...my friend
Blake would be on the ground and I would be out a training partner.
:(
LOL...Blake preparing himself for a LOADED left hook to the body!!!
Left hook is delivered and you can see that Blake is feeling it.
heehee ;) Notice how far my upper body has turned and basically twisted
into the punch after being loaded from the right hook to the body.
Once you learn how to put your entire body into a punch it can be extremely
devastating.
What's really nice about the coach utilizing the mitts and body protector
is that you can simulate sparring which is a lot of fun and a real ass
kicker. Granted, actual sparring is far more challenging but when
you don't have all the equipment for that then this is the next best thing.
Loading a left upper cut but again you can see how out of place my hands are. Wide open to get leveled!!! Thank God this is only a cardio session and not actual sparring!!!
I will hopefully be adding a boxing section to my website in the near
future which will include my very close friend Joe Morris who's talents
make me look silly when it comes to boxing!!!
