In 1555, Nostradamus, who was an astrologer and physician, wrote a series of prophecies called quatrains. These quatrains were written in French verses and have tried to be interpreted by others ever since.

The current hoax was perpetrated by a 22 year old Canadian College student named Neil Marshall.  A few years back when he was still in high school, he posted his own version of the Nostradamus quatrains on a Web page entitled "A Critical Analysis of Nostradamus,".

"I made up my own prediction: 'In the city of GOD there will be a great thunder, Two brothers torn apart by Chaos. While the fortress endures the great leader will succumb.'" Marshall said.

Many believed this to be the true Nostradamus verses and it spread through e-mails, chat rooms, message boards and other web sites like a virus.

This is what Marshall wrote:

"In the year of the new century and nine months,
From the sky will come a great King of Terror.
At forty-five degrees, the sky will burn,
Fire approaches the great new city.
Immediately a huge, scattered flame leaps up
When they wait to have verification from the Normans.
In the city of york there will be a great thunder,
Two brothers torn apart by Chaos.
While the fortress endures the great leader will succumb.
Third big war will begin when the big city is burning."

Here are the original quatrains that were written in French.

Puis Arethusa rougira nouveau fleuve.

Volcanic fire from the center of the earth 
will cause trembling around the new city: 
Two great rocks will make war for a long time. 
Then Arethusa will redden a new river.
