[search] [hatchling] [weyrling][adult][Avium Weyr] Wind rushed
through Kareenie's hair, causing it to flow behind her in brownish strands
as if it had a life of its own. She clutched the glossy black maine of
the runner she was riding for dear life. This was life! Fast as
the graceful runner's hooves could carry her she went, caught up in the
rush and not caring to look back at the others.
"I told you I could beat all of you easily, but you didn't believe me!" She laughed, patting Apache. Boys never did. They always strutted about, boasting about being the best at this or that, at everything really, and of coarse they hadn't believed Kareenie could beat them. But Kareenie loved to race. She could get even the most stubborn runnerbeast to go as fast and it could and win the race for her. The boys she raced now were residents of Avium Weyr, which she was now visiting with her mother from Cold Rocks Hold. Back home, she was the fastest of the Hold. She worked with runnerbeasts there along with a few other boys, and was the best out of all of them. She had not met one yet that she could not tame. "Wow! Shards I never knew a girl could race so good!" One of the other boys said, smiling at her as he ended the race. "Come back to the weyr with me Kareenie, and we'll get some klah and call it a day." Kareenie recognized that flirtatious smile, she had seen it on a few other boys, and smiled back. "No thanks, I've got to get Apache fed and watered." "Don't you want to see the dragons? And you know, I think they have a firelizard clutch." The boy replied. That got her interest. Dragons and firelizards had truly amazed her when she had first arrived at the Weyr with her mother, on dragonback, dragons especially, imagine racing on one of those beauties! Once she had learned that there were runners there, however, she left her mother to her business and went to go look at them. "Well, it won't take too long to get Apache settled in, I'll come with you afterwards." Firelizards were very useful creatures, so she had heard, a man at the hold had two, and she had tried to teach them to race a little bit before getting caught. If there was a clutch here, and the weyrfolk would actually allow her to impress one or two of her own? She lead Apache to the stables and gave him a scrubbing, if perhaps not as thorough as it should be, and a bucket of food before going with the boy, Yarin was his name, to the inside of Avium Weyr. A green watchdragon bulged at them as they entered, and Kareenie took time to stare at her beauty. She had arrived to the weyr on the back of a blue, the joy of riding a dragon was simply wonderful, but even now she could not help but admire the great creatures with their powerful wings and strong bodies. "This way." Yarin said, holding a door open for her as they stepped into a cavern. Kareenie looked inside and to her delight, saw a clutch of small eggs. "I'm not supposed to know about this place, but I do." Yaren said. "They will hatch really soon, you can impress one!" Kareenie looked at the rocking eggs and picked one up. It felt hard yet fragile in her hands. As she held it, it began to crack. "It's hatching!" She said excitedly, watching as a brown head popped out, followed by a body, wings and tail. As Kareenie deposited the shards of its egg on the ground, the baby flit tested its new wings and fluttered up to nip her on the ear. She felt...warm and happy, like how she felt towards runners, but magnified. She instantly loved this little creature. "Wow." She said. "You've impressed him!" Yaren smiled, playing with a lock of her hair. Oh, he thought he could take advantage did he? She slapped at his hand, just as a voice was heard outside of the cavern. ![]() "Oh no!" Yaren said. "Are we in trouble?" Kareenie demanded, struggling to keep the newly impressed brown flit from fluttering away. "I think so." A man entered the cavern, face stern. "Yaren, you know better than to just sneak around the weyr into secret places! Leave now!" Yaren lowered his eyes, after giving Kareenie a wink, and left the cavern. Kareenie stood, holding the brown who she called Reebe in her head, watching the dragonrider warily. "Where are you from, girl?" He asked. "Cold Rocks Hold, I am here with my mother." "Your name?" "Kareenie." "Ah. Well Kareenie, be sure to take good care of that firelizard. Once impression is made, it cannot be undone, even though those firelizards weren't meant to be discovered by children like you." "I am sixteen turns." Kareenie replied, she was not a child. "That's good." The man says, his face suddenly becoming warmer. "You're old enough then, to handle the responsibilities. That is, if you want to. You can't see him, but my blue Dragon is outside, and he says you would make a good candidate." Candidate! Reebe disappeared between at Kareenie's startled gasp. "He'll come back." The dragonrider assured her, gesturing for her to follow him out of the cavern. "Yes I'd love to be a candidate." Kareenie said to his back as they walked out. A race, a firelizard, and a chance at a dragon, all in one day! |
