Dear family,
I hope this letter find you
in health and happiness. How are things back home? Does the garden prosper?
Perhaps some day later when the Weyrling master allows us to go between
I
can come visit you.
Speaking of which, I have the
most wonderful news. I am very happy to write that I, your daughter Raylan,
have impressed Gold Nazareth! This is a special honor, even amung dragonfolk.
I will become Jr. Werywoman of Valley Weyr! It is wonderful beyond beleif
to be bonded to a dragon, to have a true friend who understands you and
loves you...it is a real responsibility though. Every day I must feed her
and oil her hide, but oh, she is beautiful. I wish you could see her, and
soon perhaps you can.
Nazareth and I are settling
into life here at the Weyr, soon weyrling training begins. Life at the
Weyr is different, but strangely wonderful. Nazarath keeps me company when
I am not feeding or bathing or oiling her, and we go exploring. The Weyr
has some very interesting history! Love you and miss you lots,
Raylan
There. Raylan sighned her name with
a flourish and attached it to the firelizard's leg. It would get there
soon enough. She only wished she could be there to see Dretti's reaction
when he read the letter. Her impressing a gold would kill him! But Nazareth,
wonderful gold Nazareth, was hers.
Its time!
The
dragon herself rumbled in Raylan's head, and Raylan jumped up with a start.
Weyrling training would begin!
"Come on Naz!"
Raylan said, rushing out of the weyr, her now weyrling dragon behind her.
Wait!
Nazarath
called. Raylan, you run so fast!
"You
travel so slow, you clumsy gold!" Raylan replied jokingly. "If you had
told me sooner that it was time, I wouldn't have to go as fast. Don't want
to make J'kal angry, I've allready crossed him once!" Nazarath rumbled
in the dragon equivilant of laughter at that thought, and Raylan wanted
to laugh too, even if the memory stung. All she and Nazarath had done was
climb up the ramparts to get a better look at the weyr...but J'kal had
to have been the one to see them. It wouldn't have been so bad, but Raylan
was a goldrider, and a Jr. Weyrwoman, and she would have responsibilities.
"Dragonnets
are clumsy Raylan, especially golds! That little beauty is very important
to the weyr, we can't have anything happen to her!" Raylan sighed.
Nazarath was clumsy, but she would get better. Nazarath was the
one who had wanted to climb up there! The weyr was changing her, Raylan
realised. Normally she would never have dared to do such thing. Well, Raylan
liked the change!
