The aftermath.

Blood slowly crawled out of the gaping tears in his flesh, oozing through his already saturated shirt and spreading beneath his broken body over the hot, dry ground. Vultures swarmed overhead, not quite sure if he was dead, none venturing close enough to find out. The swelling pool of blood symbolised not his own life ebbing away from him, for he was already gone. Rather, it symbolised the waste of human life in this place. There was the acrid smell of burning flesh, yet it was not his own, for the vultures could hear a woman’s whimpering, almost being swamped by the hissing of the flames, yet there was nothing of interest there that they could get, for the flames were too hot. The vultures turned their attention once again towards the man. They wondered how he could possibly be alive, with part of his legs bent under him in a number of directions, not to mention the other twenty or so pieces that littered that bitumen slab. His arms looked as if they were warding of a hoard of insects, stuck in that position forever, the mangled fingers drooping lifelessly at the ends. They moved their gaze up to his neck, and realised it was sitting in an unnatural way, changing direction twice before hitting the jaw and lower half of the skull. The other half of his head lay on his chest, his eyes had fallen into his pocket. His brain had skidded along the road, once it was free from the connective tissue it had shared for so long with the skull, still attached to the spinal cord, although three meters away. Once they fully noticed this, they realised his life had ended, and thus engaged in devouring him. His mutilated body was shook and rent from side to side as the vultures jostled for prime position about him. Suddenly there was a wail, and the quicker vultures fled, while the weaker ones who finally got a chance at the body and those that were to preoccupied with the corpse were caught. " Aye, ‘tis a sad sight to see, when people would rob a dead man in a car crash, the shame of it all" said the policeman afterwards.
