undersweater (tank top or shell?), a sweater knitted top down, presented =
as an "upside down" sweater, anything which is "understatedly elegant" and =
my favorite: give her something which has one end yet to be woven in and =

Subject: Knit: KNIT: Objects that begin with "U"

I'm on Digest so I hope this idea hasn't come through already...

Jan in NC needs a knitted object that begins with "u".  Gee, you could have
fun with this one!  How about some knitted underwear?  There was a knitted
bikini pattern in the summer 2000 issue of one of the knitting mags, you can
use that pattern and modify as needed!  Not necessarily a practical idea,
but it could be a fun holiday to see your mom open that gift!

AFO:  working on a pair of warm woolen socks for DH.  They have to be done
by Thursday as he leaves on a trip to Minnesota.  Fortunately, I'm on the
foot of the second sock now.  They are made out of some hand dyed yarn from
a woman in CT that recently had her goods at a YS in MA.  The yarn is great
but 280 yards definitely wasn't enough to make a pair of calf-high socks for
DH.  The legs are in this wonderful blue and I am using an oddball skein
from a different YS's recent sale to do the feet.

Next Project:  A sheep tea cozy, pattern from www.blackberry-ridge.com.
NAYY, I just love sheep!  This will be a holiday gift for MY mom.

The "C" word:  I skipped over the message on the final word about "C".  Then
when I heard everyone laughing, I had to go back and read it.  That was a
great one!  Good sense of humor!

Knit On!

Mom's bday gift
Sunday was my mom's bday. My gift reached her post office box on Friday
but there was a huge storm in northern California on Friday/Saturday, so she
didn't get to the p.o. to get it until yesterday....and she found...ta
da...a
Faerie Vine tote that I made her.  She was appropriately delighted with it,
which she should have been.  This is a new (Just Barely Out) design by
Brenda Zuk  (  www.needlebeetle.com   click on what's new) and I would bet
that Brenda and Mom are the only ones carrying them around at this time.  So
if you see someone with one and she is young and beautiful and you are in
the Toronto area, I might add, it is most likely Brenda.  If you see someone
in northern California with a raspberry colored one and she's not young (84,
in fact) but beautiful, nonetheless, say hi to my mom!

I hesitated to tell Mom that there is a tunic pattern with the Faerie Vines
on it...I was afraid she'd suggest that for another time.  I just might do
it for myself, tho.  The pattern is a not difficult and it is very
beautiful.

Friday, dh and I drove 2 hours down the coast for an appt and then we
visited our dd and her dh and then came home.  I had lots of knitting time
and finished 4 preemie hats.  Saturday I made up another 3 and ditto on
Sunday.  So even though I sent out a batch of hats on Thursday, my pile is
building up again.  In fact, I have 15.  Good.  I want to have a big batch
to send before Thanksgiving and then another big batch before Christmas.  I
haven't any new designs up on photopoint this time.  I did put up a picture
of a little
Debbie Bliss mouse wearing a sweater under Kiddy Knitting.
http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumList?u=118005

Not that I need more yarn/ys fun
While in Thousand Oaks (California, just north of Los Angeles) on Friday, I
stopped by Evan's Needlework to see if perchance she had any size 0, 1, or 2
11" circulars by Hero (no longer made but must be lingering on some shelf in
a ys somewhere, or in someone's needle bin) for my friend who would love to
have any or all of those for sock knitting.  Alas, Eva didn't even know
about Heros. (If you do and have some that you want to sell, please contact
me.)
Eva has a nice selection of sock yarns and I had to buy a
couple of skeins of  Schachenmayr Nomotta Extra Tweed. I thought that
they would be nice for socks for me but I ended up making up a pair of socks
for dd#2 who will be 20 next Tuesday.  They worked up quickly.
I used a size 3 needle and got 5.5 sts/inch.  I used a p2/k3 pattern, moving
over every row.  I just used 34 sts, so it moved itself as I went along.  I
then did a 3/1 rib on the top of the foot for a bit of design and to promote
snugness.

Next? Today's project?
Said daughter will also get a tube top and socks out of Fixation if the yarn
ever gets here!  It has take forever to come since John (Village Spinning
and Weaving Shop in Solvang, my lys) ordered it, but the
good part is that instead of just ordering the bag of fern that I wanted,
John ordered some of each color.  Will I walk out with the fern or something
else or the fern AND something else?  Stay tuned to find out. (I don't know,
myself!)  I'm hoping that I'll be able to start on those socks and tube top
today.

Another WIP
Other projects: I'm working on the capelet part of the Edwardian carrying
cape by Oat Couture,  inspired by Cheryl Dawley's beautiful, award-winning
one.  http://www.teleport.com/~cdawley/fiberarts/FOs/FOlace.html  The total
length of the capelet is just 10" and I have 8.5" worked, now, so will be
finished with this and casting on for the longer under cape by noon.

Hi,
Sorry to post this to the whole list, but I lost my address book when my PC
went to the shop for work.  To those Kalamazoo, MI area knitters that have
asked me...
The Weavers Guild sale is Nov. 17 & 18, at KVCC.   The sale is relatively
small, but has very nice handspun yarns, IMHO.  Contact me offlist if you
need further info.

Just back from the Sandhills of NC, where I did precious little knitting, but
looks like our house will start in January.  I managed to knit dishclothes on
the drive there & back.  Forgot the bag of sock yarn, needles, patterns, that
I'd gathered up so carefully.

This past year I made a big effort to knit Birthday socks for all of the
nieces (9)...a pair with a seasonal theme, or favorite design.  It was a big
hit, but seemed to take forever.  I'd just get one pair barely finished, and
it was time to figure out the next pair.  And these aren't little kids...most
of them have feet as big as my size 9's.  They're anxious to have me do this
again, but am thinking 2001 will be the year of lacey socks...with many
yarnovers.

Some pattern designers give discounts to guilds - it doesn't hurt to ask!

- ---> Photocopied Patterns
When you're handed a photocopied pattern, you can inquire about whether
permission was given without being strident. I've been known to say, "Oh I
really like this pattern, but no thanks - I'd rather contact the designer
and buy one. I just think it's important to support someone whose work I
like so much."  BTW, sometimes it pains me because I can't locate the
designer and really loved the pattern :-(

How about knitting her a scarf or hat using the Umbrella Stitch or the
Uneven Cable (from Barbara Walker's Treasury of Knitting Patterns)?  Or
maybe an Unlined handbag?  You could fudge and make her a Unique

Subject: Knit: Charlotte's Web Shawl--pattern error?  and a FO

Hello, knitfriends:

I am finally starting on the Charlotte's Web shawl for me in Koigu yarns.
Since I have realized that looking at the pattern the way it is written will
make me go blind, I decided to type it into my computer in an easier to read
format.  (Pattern designers, please note:  Life is easier for knitters if
each row starts on a new line, preferably with a space in between rows,
rather than all crammed together).  ANYHOO, I noticed what I am 99% sure is
an error in Row 19.  Shouldn't it be k5 rather than k6 before and after the
lace repeats?  If someone has done the pattern, please let me know.

A FO from this week:  a pair of beautiful blue socks in Fortissima wool.  I
knitted it at 6.5 stitches to the inch, and used the slip stitch cable from
Joy Slayton's ribbings book.  It hugs the leg better than my other socks do.
This pair is a winner.

That's it for now....

TIA

YIKES, my knitbuddies!

No one else in my life will understand, but I can just SEE all your faces
crumpling up in sympathy!

I'm within TWO INCHES of finishing my Barehill Vest in Iris La Boheme and
ALL MY YARN IS GONE - I even unraveled my gauge swatch and used THAT, but
it's still not enough.  I'm completely bummed and not pleased at all, MOSTLY
because the pattern calls for 10 oz. of La Boheme and I bought three 4 oz.
hanks - I should have plenty, yes?  Wha' happened? :-(

It's a very simple pattern, designed to show off the yarn - garter stitch,
seamless to the armholes, knit the fronts with simple V-neck shaping, then
knit the back to the same length as the fronts and graft the 18 sts at the
top of the fronts to the first 18 sts on each side of the back.  It's at the
back that I came up short.

The only thing I can think of doing is frogging back the fronts a bit, snip
off the extra, and knit it into the back - keep doing this until they're
even.  I e-mailed Fiesta Yarns (the manufacturer) over a week ago, asking
for help.  I've heard nada (last time I buy THEIR yarn!).

Other than buying another hank of Iris (which I wouldn't do anyway, but I
don't think they even MAKE it anymore), what can I do to fix this?

Thanks for your help.

De-lurking for a while to comment on teenagers....

Being not so very far from teenagers (24, 25 in Dec), with a very caring,
but very stubborn set of parents, I know exactly what Diana's DD was
thinking not inviting mom to speak at her school--Both my parents came to
school often, and it was ABSOLUTELY humiliating for me at age 13.

My dad spoke to 3 of my classes for 3 years in a row (and oh, I tried to
stop him, to no avail.  Dang it if my teachers didn't know him personally
and foil my attempts).

And my mother was the ONLY mother to come to the "come to your child's
classes" week EVERY SINGLE YEAR--Kindergarten through senior year in high
school.  I remember screaming fights with mom trying to get her to stop.
And this was after the screaming fights my mom had with my older brother
that resulted in her compromising by not attending any classes that we were
actually physically in.  (Needless to say, my friends loved seeing her in
their classes, and for some godawful reason my teachers did too and tended
to call on her--evil!!)

By the time senior year rolled around, it still bugged me, but I finally
started to realize that there was no real reason why it was embarrassing.
It's a teenage thing.  Aunts and uncles and grandparents are far easier to
deal with in school than your parents when you're 13--they're less likely to
embarrass you (in your teenage mind).  Now that I'm older, my mind has
changed--I'm constantly inviting my parents to visit work.

I have to say that I am impressed at her efforts to keep the parental space
and school space from interacting--be proud that she's a smart 13 year old
who was foiled only at the last minute and by her teacher no less!  And take
heart--things will change soon enough!

(Almost) FO--my very first cardigan sweater, knit in the round in 2x2 rib on
heather grey Lopi!!  Very excited.  Not only is it my first cardigan, I
actually figured out how to do a V-neck!  Now to find a zipper long enough .
. .

I have to say, all you knitlisters are so inspiring, I'm starting to dream
of cables, and fairisle, and anything else....mmmm fairisle....

I hate to sound whiny, but... I think I'm gonna whine.
Is anyone else out there just sick of all the bulky
knits these days??  It's like it's
absolutely impossible to find patterns for anything
below size 9 needles, and that's usually the very
chunkiest I go.  Is there really anything so
wrong with wanting something fine and time-consuming
and beautiful?  I really really really hope that the
bulky trend turns around soon. <

Oh whine away!  I've been complaining (ok, there are
stronger words that would describe it) about these
fercrinkeny bulky knits since they became a "trend" -
in fact, it's hard to find knitting magazines here,
and I tracked down one by accident in my local grocery
and then while browsing through it at the checkout,
discovered it had nothing but these bulky knits.
ARGH!  I'm sorry, but even slight fluffiness on the
part of the wearer makes these things look well,
REALLY BAD!  Besides, it was a style I've lived
through once and I don't need to be repeating that era
of my life again!

Anyway on to better thoughts!  the AS Cornwall is a
FO, having been washed and blocked.  I'm giving it to
my sister as it actually fits her really well at the
larger size it ended up.

As for new projects - I have nothing on the needles!
So, in my quest to find a pattern for a 1st communion
veil for my niece, I found lots of lovely shawls and
discovered that most veil patterns are filet cr*chet!
I don't do filet crochet, I don't even do crochet! I
may have to learn, or punt by making a triangular
shawl of the right size.  OTOH, I got to thinking that
a shawl of great extravagence in pattern would make a
nice 100th birthday present for my grandmother.
She'll be 99 on Nov 2, and we're actually plotting a
year in advance for her 100th birthday.  Lots of truly
lovely patterns are available right now, shawls being
in right now, but what to make!  I'm having fun
looking anyway.

In the meantime, while I have my niece's vest done for
her birthday next month, I don't have her brother's
jacket done!  I don't even have the pattern written
out even though I wrote the dimensions down 3 months
ago.  Nothing like a nasty illness to subvert your
present giving plans!  This is a Cowichan style jacket
with horse motifs.  I probably need to go to elann.com
or eknitting and find myself some nice medium worsted
weight yarn.  He's going to be 4, so it's not like
it's a huge project!  I just need to get it written
down and started.  I was going to make both boys the
jackets with different motifs for their birthdays, but
I've really got to get going on that!

Happy knitting all!  Ann McDonald

Dear Knitpals:

Nancy Duff was a member of the stashlist before she died.  A little over a
week ago
she asked that our group  join her in making afghan squares and send to the
participants
and there by each person would have a unique friendly afghan.

Nancy didn't live long enough to see this project materialize which many
people were
interested in.  Her only specification is that yarn from stash be used.

Members of our group are very saddened by Nancy's passing and one of our
members have decided that everyone who has a stash, maybe not as huge as
Nancy's.
take a look at what you have and make a 8 by 8  maybe one or two square in
her memory out of woolease.
Woolease was chosen because of it's easy care.

I am now inviting members of this list to join the stashlist group in
making an afghan in
her memory.

the squares would be mailed to one person that person would put the afghan
squares
together and mail it to Nancy's family in her memory.

If any knitlister would like to join stashlisters in this endeavor please
contact
me directly at Cosy-place.com and will pass on to you the person who is
organizing
this and she will tell you more about this endeavor.

Another friend of mine on this list (who will remain nameless as she
doesn't know am doing this)
is also losing her Dad to cancer.  He has maybe just a couple months to
live..send a prayer upward
for this person.  God understand and will know who you are offering a
prayer for..thanks.

WIP: sweater from lionbrand woolease ball band.  Went to the frog pond,
ripping the sleeves and
now I like them better.

Halfpints:  Numerous.  Think I will use the loopy mohair and make Lilly'
shawl in knitters.

take care and have a nice evening.

bye now.

- ------CULTIVATING NEW KNITTERS---------

I've been teaching several of my co-workers to knit and I have found that
they are very attracted to variegated yarns.  Now, I had read that using a
variegated yarn would be too confusing for a new knitter but the women I
have been teaching get really excited about knitting those bright Red Heart
Fiesta colorways.

Other thoughts: go with a smooth yarn instead of a boucle or novelty yarn;
pick something with some elasticity to it that doesn't split easily---my
students had trouble learning on dishcloths because of the cotton yarn.

- ------Fantasy Project-------

My fantasy project would be one of those lace jackets with the peplum on
Joan McGowan's website.  I have a beautiful floral print dress that is very
flattering on me, but I can't wear it to work because it is sleeveless.  I
think that a black lace jacket would set it off well.

Subject: Knit: FOs Stahlman's shawls, reviving UFO

Hello knitters,
I am so excited. I just finished Icelandic Roses. It looks wonderful, even
if it is a bulky knit. It's perfect for everyday wear this winter, and easy
care since it's a superwash. Just what this busy mom needs! This is an
older Brown Sheep pattern that I was thrilled to be able to get, thanks to
athe great people at Purls who responded to my search for this pattern.
Just a satisified customer! I've only been knitting on this weekends and
evening as I am still plugging away at Meg's Russian Prime for DH's
Christmas present. I am now 4 or 5 inches down the first sleeve. I already
did the hem so I'll just need to do the neck I-cord after sleeves.

A week or two ago, I finished the Fenna shawl from Stahlman's shawls and
scarves. This is the simplest, most plain at least, shawl in the book. I
did it in Cherry Hill's wool boucle in the Java color from Yarn Xpress.
(again, no affiliation) It looks great. I took it on it's first official
test run to the Indianapolis Zoo on Saturday. It wasn't long enough to tie
like she did in the book, but I did tuck the ends into the waistband of my
jeans. Despite pushing kids in the stroller, lifting others up to see over
fences, riding on the little train with my knees up to my chin, it stayed
marvelously in place! I love the shaping of this and am going to make
another, this time in one of the lacey patterns out of some alpaca I got in
a swap.

I was making a vest from some Ballybrae several years back from a Tahki
pattern and it's been in a box as a UFO for some time. Friday night I think
I found my place in the pattern. I also discovered why I abandoned it. My
row gauge must be off because if I followed the pattern for the neckline
decreases, the left front would be significanly longer than the back, which
is finished. So I think I might just go ahead and try to finish it figuring
how many rows I need to do to get to the proper length, then since I know I
decrease by 20 stitches spreading those out evenly of the rows after I
double check to make sure the shoulder width will match. Does that make
sense? This is a great pattern just loaded with cables that I fell in love
with, but I know I will never frog the whole thing and start again. If that
doesn't work I'll burn it! I'm used to improvising on sewing patterns, but
somehow think knitting patterns have to be written in stone. This should
work, shouldn't it??? As long as I repeat it for the right front? Having a
couple nice, successful FO's is really motivating me to finish up what is
really my only UFO. I can't stand the guilt!

Hi gang and Happy Halloween,

I am just delurking for a bit.  I read all the mail, but usually don't chime
in.

I have finally finished a very long stole/shawl that I designed.  I am
calling it "Shenandoah" and only the list mom knows what it looks like so
far.  I also finished a triangular shawl made from Fiesta Boehm (am I
spelling that correctly?).  It's that fantastic stuff that is a rayon boucle
and mohair dyed together.  Impossible to work with, but the outcome is so
fantastic I am going to try it again!

Also did the Prairie Lace Shawl from Cheryl Auberelle's book "Folk Shawls".
Hope I didn't spell her name wrong!  Working on another from the same book,
but I have modified it a bit, so I doubt anyone would recognize it.

My Christmas present this year is a triangle loom, so I may be forsaking
knitting for a while, but I'll be back!  Happy knitting!

Subject: Knit: Pinwheel Hat Question

Hello knitters.  I am currently working on the Pinwheel Hat . . . I know
some of you have made this, and I have a question.

I understand the instructions up to the garter stitch border.  When I have
82 stitches on my needle, I see that I knit 9, k2tog, turn, and knit ten
back.  At this point I am back at the beginning with 81 stitches.  It says
to continue doing this until all of them have been worked.  Does this mean
that I reduce the whole thing to 10 stitches, and knit those first 9 over
and over again??  I can't at all visualize how this would work.  Help?

All,

Hello!

I'm currently working on a sweater on page 14 of the Fall issue of Family
Circle Easy Knitting Plus Crochet Too.  I'm close to finishing it.  I'm
stuck, though.  The sweater calls for a zipper placket, I'm doing the
placket, but instead of a zipper, I'm going to do a button band.  I have no
idea how to go about doing a button band or how to put them into the
placket.  Any advice offlist would be appreciated.  This is my first
sweater.

Subject: Knit: Best needles for socks?

Hi,

I am on a neverending quest for the best sock knitting needles.  I like to
use a size US1 for socks.  I like to knit on 5 dpns, altho I have tried
using 2 circulars before.  I loved the Brittany birches because they were
flexible, but goshdarnit, this is the second one I've broken.  Yes, I know
about the return policy, but I'd rather just get needles that won't break!

The Bryspun needles were great for flexibility, but lousy for tips.  I hear
they have a new tip, but haven't heard if they are out in dpns yet.  If
anyone knows (esp. vendors), please contact me!

How about those Pony Pearls?  Are they good for the really thin sizes?

I'm embarrassed that I ran out of candy tonight (Halloween).  I bought two
cases of king size candy bars - no little bite size candies at *this* house
- - but we've had over 50 kids.  Yikes.  I guess next year I'll buy a third
case.
