Hi all...

I'm slowing coming out of my knitting funk...put away
the Dale for now...now making a bathrobe from Lion Brand
Terryspun and having a ball with it!

So...amongst my WsIP is the AS Iona sweater that I started
a couple of months back...I got stalled at the start of the
big cable...has anyone made this??  I'm making it from
Annabel Fox Cotton Chenille and so far it's been behaving
properly...I need some motivation to get moving along with
it, though...anyone out there do any AS cable sweaters can
give me some inspiration???

Nothing much else to report other than I go the latest VK
and fell in love with #37...the one by Norah Gaughan (pardon
my spelling if it's wrong)...may go and check out the LYS
and see if they have the yarn...anyone else out there get
yarn for a sweater and have it just sit at home for a while???

got to run...have to get to work!

Hi, Susan and Other Knitfriends:

After serious consultation with Mary Hughes-Thompson, I am convinced that
what I THOUGHT was an error was not.  Since I haven't gotten to there yet,
I'll just have to see how it works out.  I'm not really good at envisioning
lace patterns and repeats, so I'll take it on faith :-)

What I thought was an error also turned out to be on the charts as well, so
I think we can take it as a given that it was not an error.

Sorry for the confusion.

Hello Everyone -

It's been ages since I posted, but I've been keeping up with the digests.

Looking for Yarn
I'm trying to finish up some projects before the end of the year. One is a
lovely Guilford Guernsey from Yankee Knitters. I'm doing this is a brown
Paisley Lite, which I purchased at an outlet years and years ago. Of course,
I'm on the sleeves and fear I'll run out of yarn.

I'm hoping against hope that somebody has some of this in their stash. I
don't have a lot or color number, as I bought this wound on a cone. The
color is brown - not dark like a chocolate bar, but not light like cinnamon.
Just a brown. Can anyone help me out? I'll pay $$ or trade.

Chat - What I've Been Up To
This year I've been working mostly on my quilts - which is my other passion.
Got lots done too. I also injured a tendon in my left hand, which is taking
forever to heal and has been hampering my knitting. I'm happy to say I can
manage some knitting and now have a renewed interest in my knitting.

Hello dear listers,

After finishing Charlotte's gorgeous Ribbing Is no Yoke I decided to play
with a hat with the same moving ribs. I emulated flaps using short rows and
named it Faux Flaps Quiggle Inspired Hat. Don't know if it's in good English.

My goal was a baby hat but it stretches so much that suits an average adult
head. But my sample isn't deep enough. Hope it actually suits a baby head.
Well, just an exercise in designing. I use DK yarn on needles 4.25mm (US
6). It looks good in my up-down flowerpot. Maybe not indeed. It's looking
like an Inca mummy. That pot has eyes? Oh my!

Does anyone out there have any in their stash they'd be willing

Thanks for looking!

Eileen, just slip your scarf from the needles onto a piece of yarn. Then
weigh the scarf and the ball of yarn. Now you know the total weight, and
when the ball is half that weight, you're halfway done!  And
congratulations on your personal "decreasing"!

Hi, All:

Felted Bags...

I purchased several patterns at Stitches East from Wool You Order for their
felted bags.  I've made three so far--all different--and all came out
adorable!  In all my years of knitting, I've never tried felting before, and
was thrilled that it actually worked.  I used Brown Sheep naturespun worsted,
some very old Brunswick Sheepswool from the stash to match a sweater I made,
and Plymouth Galway.

Guild Meeting....

This is a reminder that the Liberty Bell Knitting Guild will meet on Monday
evening, November 13th at 7:00 p.m. at the Welsh Road branch of the library

Wow!  I'm impressed that anyone can knit any sweater (other than a baby
version) in 3 weeks or even a month!

I'm doing Ribbing Is No Yoke as well, in (I think) Crystal Palace Carnaval
wool in the most luscious soft red (watermelon or coral red) color, although
I may do it again in olive or pale gray or teal or any of the other
wonderful colors in this yarn.  I've swatched in a cotton, but haven't found
one yet that matches gauge well enough.

At this point, it's being done on breaks at work because the kittens from
H*** managed to ruin the first shirttail piece I did!  New kittens haven't
yet been properly trained to ignore Mom's knitting by the older resident
cats!'

From: Carol Adams <adams@pioneerlocal.com>
Subject: Knit: Thanks!

Hello, all! Thanks to all of you who were so gracious to help me with my
afghan problem.  I've decided to use white in a wool or something fluffy
and off-white in a shiny nylon or something similar.  Or maybe the reverse.
I need to go to a yarn shop -- there's nothing like actually seeing and
touching the yarn. Right?  Some of you suggested the Hot Damn afghan, which
really sounds interesting and exotic (I do have the pattern), but I think
the cost is prohibitive right now.  Even the one I'm planning sounds
expensive.  You see, I'm just beginning to get into different fibers so
I've gotten used to spending less for acrylics.

My story -- in a nutshell, I taught myself to knit when I was in my 20s. I
had a faraway favorite aunt who used to knit and I wanted to learn, so I
did.  Lots of frustration! No one around to coach me, so things got put
away regularly when it got to be too much. But they always came back out
again and I made several baby sets (sweaters, etc.) and a couple of adult
sweaters, which didn't come out as well as I wanted them to, and some
scarves, etc.

It's many years later now (60 this year) and although I have made a few
things from time-to-time (I made an afghan for my mother -- which took me a
year! with strips of cables), I have only recently gotten VERY interested
again in knitting.  I am really enjoying the whole idea of creating
beautiful works of art, even though I'm still learning. I'm a beginner, but
I do know how to do cables and a few other intermediate things.  I don't
have as much time as I would like to devote to knitting (working full time,
commuting 2 hours a day, husband, church volunteer work), but hope to spend
more time in the near future -- since I have quite a large stash already!
In my enthusiasm, I found patterns I liked and bought the yarn for about 6
projects!  So they're waiting for a while. I told my husband that I'm
planning to retire at 62 (and I plan on doing a LOT of knitting, although I
didn't tell him THAT!).

FO - (I believe that's for finished objects, right?) In the last year I
have made numerous scarves from Lion's Chenille Thick N Quick, in Wine,
White, Black, and Forest Green. I also made a baby blanket for my husband's
new grandson. I made it double because I first made it in blue, but
thought it wasn't sturdy enough so made it again in white and sewed the two
blankets together. I used a basket-weave pattern.  I tacked them together
in several places as well as around the edge. I also made a yellow garter
stitch ruffled baby blanket (still waiting for a home), and a blue and
white (2 strand) baby blanket with a braided edge and blue satin ribbon
(still waiting for a home).  I also recently made a forest green lap cover
or small afghan for a young friend with cancer (in her 20s).

WIP - I am now working on another forest green small afghan, using a boucle
in a seed stitch, and then interspersing it with a few rows of sport weight
using KO's and ktg's to create some holes to make it a little more
interesting.  This is just an experiment, really, my first attempt at
designing something myself.  It's  not great, but it's OK.  I figure it's a
learning experience. Which all of knitting is, isn't it?

I also have 3/4 finished a long vest for myself. I put it away because
something came up (does this ALWAYS  happen?) and then when looking at it a
few months ago, I can't figure out where I left off! Oh, no! I may have to
begin again! Maybe if I rip a few rows I can figure it out. Anyway, that
has to wait for a while.

OK. So now my next WIP will be the Wedding Afghan. I really wish I could do
the Tree of Life afghan, but I don't know if it's too hard or not. And
anyway, I don't think I have the time to complete it before January.

I injured my ankle the end of August, actually just a sprain but the
orthopedist told me that I did as much damage as I could without actually
fracturing the bone. There's lots of stuff torn in there, I guess. Of
course, it's much better now, but I was off work for 4 weeks, and spent the
majority of the time knitting the forest green afghan for my friend. That
was a GOOD use of my time, I thought.  When I was first injured, I crawled
around the house because I couldn't hop too far on one foot, and my husband
couldn't help me -- he has a bad back. I had also injured one of my arms in
the fall, just below the elbow. So that limited my mobility, too. I came up
with the idea of using one of our kitchen chairs with casters, and I just
ROLLED around! I borrowed some crutches, too, but they were hard to
manipulate. However, I did use them when I went out of the house. Then I
had to get an xray (after a week - not too smart) because I wanted to get
Workers Comp while I was home. They said it was not fractured and my
Achilles tendon was OK. My MD sent me to a specialist, who put me in an air
cast. My foot from the upper ankle down was ALL colors! and swollen! Even
my toes! Now it only swells behind and below the ankle bone. I'm not
wearing any braces or anything but after working all day I have some
discoloration and some soreness, so I sit on the couch and knit, unless I
have some other duties that take me away from it.

Sorry this is so long, but this is my first REAL posting, so I thought I
would just give you my spiel.

I think you guys are great. The way you support each other, it seems like a
knitting class or knitting club, or something. When I run into trouble
knitting some of my projects in the basket, I will look to you for your
wisdom.

Thanks again for your advice on the Wedding Afghan. And keep up the good
 work!

Good Afternoon from cloudy Queens......

Like Sandy, I too bought some felted Bag Patterns from Wool You Order.
Yesterday I bravely took my knitted piece using Paton's Classic Wool to the
Laundry room in our apartment building....Used a front loader and after one
wash....VOILA !  I had this incredible felted bag...I can't tell you how
amazed I was that after only one washing, it appeared to me to be perfect.
Now I can't wait to do more....fast to knit and obviously felted in 1
wash....

The vest from H*ll continues along.  Have had to take another break because
of thumb pain and am finishing a pair of socks for a friends son who is in
the Peace Corp in Russia. A pair of socks should come in real handy in the
cold winter there.....
Once I finish this vest then I can finish several other languishing projects
from the summer. They are all for me so there is no rush and I can
see....felted purses as gifts for the holidays.....will interrupt that
progress.....

Also, last weekend I took a wonderful workshop through the BAKG with Judy
Pascale......Vertical Vests.  Judy is a great teacher with wonderful
handouts.  Her enthusiasm and knowledge made this a really interesting class
and a project that I really would like to do SOON!!!!!

Subject: Knit: Henry VIII decision and progress

Hi All,

Thanks to all of you who replied to me about my Henry predicament.  I
eventually resigned myself to frogging it back to the first two rows of
ribbing and doing it right... I was so relieved! I'll remember from now on
that I'm too much of a perfectionist to be satisfied with mediocrity.  Now
my Henry is about 5 inches, and I'm about to start on the big motifs.  That
should take me a while.  Did perfectionism and procrastination form a
partnership?!?   I'm telling myself it will be done by Christmas, but my
track record disagrees with me. <lol>

Angora:
Also, thanks for the suggestions about angora...some suggested I use loose
angora fibers and felt them, making a fabric with which to line the mittens
(an excellent suggestion, and far less expensive).  Others pointed me to
good sources of angora and angora blends on the web.  This even led me to
investigate adopting a bunny or two, but I decided it might be more work
than I wanted to invest right now-- might take away from my knitting time!
Also, DH finds it difficult to believe we could litter-train a rabbit, and I
would not want to keep one outside.

Brigid:
To the person who fell in love with the AS Brigid, let me know when you
start it!  I have all the yarn (the amber color Heather) and it's in my
future project lineup.  Perhaps you will inspire me to do it sooner than I
expected!  Who else has knitted this?

KIP and Ireland:
Went to the doc this morning, a once-every-three years or so event, and knit
away on Henry.  Then went to the pharmacy, where the pharmacist (a lady) was
wearing an absolutely gorgeous cabled cardigan, waist-length, in a clear
blue.  Turns out she had just returned from her honeymoon in Ireland, where
she purchased this and other sweaters.  She raved about how wonderful the
Irish were, and confirmed that there are indeed 40 shades of green there
(Seattle is known as the Emerald City, but I'm not sure we have THAT many
shades of green!).  Now, if I were to persuade my DH (who is of Irish
descent and whose middle name, by the way, is KIP (!)) to go to Ireland,
where should we go and where shall we stay for the best knitting related
fun?

Enough!
May your home be filled with happiness, your life with love, and your hands
with knitting.

Sheila (in Seattle, waiting for muscle relaxants to give her back her
neck...)

Many thanks to all who responded to my question on how to treat the corn
before use in a warmer bag!
Most of the responses I got were suggestions to use rice instead of the corn
and to first place the rice in a nylon stocking before stuffing into a wool
knitted bag.  Others suggested using beans or flax seed.  I think I'm first
going to try using rice and yes, Laurels, I would *definitely* try Basmati
rice... mmmmmm!!!  Also suggested was to scent the rice with lavender, for
example.

I'm nearly done with the Colette sweater from Jean Moss's
Sculptured Knits, in  gorgeous blue/green Chelsea Silk.  I have just the
lapels, collar and seaming left, and only one ball of yarn.  Fortunately
the store still has the dye lot, so I'll get more saturday, including
enough for a matching cloche hat.

UFO, soon to be WIP
I got some other yarn in the mail today to finish a sweater that's
been languishing for two years unfinished.  It's another Jean Moss design
from the winter VK or Knitters of two years ago.  It has the back and
sleeves in a solid color cable design.  I just happened to have enough of
that yarn in my stash and made those two winters ago.  The fronts have a
multi color intarsia design, and I didn't have yarn for that and my store
had discontinued it. But now I have the yarn and I'll have to design a
pattern for the front--I don't care for the squares design of the pattern.
I have medium and dark brown, yellow, pink, light orange, rust and light
blue.  The buttons I have are dull silver with a rounded  five petal
shape.  I'm thinking  loose flower shapes to compliment the buttons on a
dark brown ground (that's what I have most of), maybe some dragonflies.
The cable parts are in the medium brown.  Time to play with my Stitch
Painter software.

My knitting student
My 20something knitting student has finished her first hat and
started a second.  She's hooked, and hooked on the good stuff.  I took her
to the best yarn store I know for her first outing, and she says I've
spoiled her for quality yarns.  I'm so proud of her. <EG>  She's going
back saturday to get yarn for her next project, a scarf, and will pick up
the remaining yarn for my coat.

She has a roommate who used to knit and who has been very
interested in her progress.  Faye says the other night she came home to a
somewhat spooky setting, the light was off, but the switch chain still
swinging, and the rocking chair was still rocking, but there was no one
there.  Then her roommate came out of the hall where she'd been hiding,
with something clutched behind her back.  It was knitting that she had
just bought.  She said she was afraid it was the other roommate who had
come home and was embarrased to be found with her knitting with that
roommate's trendy friends.  Faye said I just sat her down, shook my finger
at her and said, Don't you know knitting is IN.

I'm so pleased she's doing so well.  I've only tried to teach a
complete beginner twice before.  One picked it up easily, but didn't stay
with it.  The other knit sooooo tightly, she couldn't stand it and quit.
It was sad/funny, as she is the most tightly wound person I know, though
she won't hear that from anyone, and telling her to relax and loosen up
was as hopeless for knitting as for any other aspect of her life.

tomorrow is a holiday.  Three days during which I plan to clean the
kitchen, cook, knit, play music, knit, sleep in, knit, watch videos and
knit.  And the weather looks perfect for it, cold and snowy.

Subject: Knit: Knitting Software

I am asking husband for knitting software for
Christmas this year, and had a few questions if anyone
could answer

- - Is there software like a Paint program where I can
either create my own patterns in color for intarsia or
fair isle, and the program will chart out the rows and
stitches?  Also, one where I can load a picture in and
it will create the chart for me.  I needed a chart of
the Batman logo for a sweater, and did it by hand
after finding a picture.  Don't really want to do that
again.

- - I also want a program where I can work out a sweater
pattern in all the various sizes.  Right now I do it
by hand, sometimes knitting the same sweater in
various sizes until I have the pattern right.

Currently knitting a cable sweater combining an
interesting aran design as the center panel with two
cables on either side of it.  I am very far behind in
my Christmas knitting, having yet to start a number of
objects.

O.K., for some wacky reason I have been unable to get the Woolworks site for

something going on with this site?

It looks like the domain is down I checked the databases and it's no longer
registered to anybody. I would think that the few people who can still
connect are having the page loaded from the cache and not the actual site.

Hopefully it's just a short-term problem and Emily is just looking for a
new host?

Thanks.  I got KF's Glorious Knits out of the library ten years ago, to ooh
and aah over the pictures.  After I'd checked it out enough times to feel
guilty, I finally bought my own copy and decided I had to try.  That's how I
learned to do intarsia.

Fassett grew up about two hours from here, and I'm between Big Sur and San
Francisco, so he has visited my LYS on a number of occasions and autographed
my books.  And my mom's.  And various friends'.  I love the fact that he
describes the Big Diamond jacket as being large, but that they drape
beautifully and look good on everyone--because I had made the Carpet Coat in
68 shades of mohair, and when I got all done, my 6'8+" husband, who'd been
drooling over it, said, "It fits me better than it fits you." (I'm 5'5".)
"Go make yourself another one."  Encouraging me wasn't hard; I made Big
Diamonds in doubled mohair (86 shades!) on size 9's.  For California
weather, that's my winter coat.  But with that quote about them being large
but fitting everybody!--and then Fassett walked into the door of my friend
Louise's shop, and while he didn't have to duck like my husband would to go
through the doorway, he was plenty tall.  It was a priceless moment.

And those coats are why I had enough mohair left to make an afghan.  But
only if I use lots of different shades.  Twist my arm.

Thanks for writing.  I'd love to hear what you make next.

sorry in advance if this is lengthy, but I ramble when I come out of
lurking!

Knitters at UCONN
I don't know what happened, but everyone around here seems to have caught
the knitting bug! of course I think I am to blame, but I'm happy to take the
responsibility. I taught both of my roommates to knit and three girls on my
floor too-all three of them this week! there are more people lurking in the
shadows who have shown interest too. Its been fun, especially since they
have referred to me as 'the master' which I am most definitely not, but its
a nice wish... they are all impatient people who want immediate results, not
good for knitting, but I wanted to encourage them. so, they are all doing
scarves in garter stitch with bulky yarns on big needles. I was going to try
and think of something more interesting, but I don't think they would have
have stuck with it. Just so you know how impatient this group is, I gave my
roommate a lesson and she sat down and did some practicing and after about
five minutes proclaimed she was ready to start her project. at least they
are all knitting... I was actually thinking of starting a club, but I won't
be here next semester so it will have to wait until next year. I have also
become the mad KIPper, I take my knitting with me almost everywhere. I knit
in class, while walking to class, I only put it down to eat!

VK
I have never bought a knitting magazine before and I recently purchased the
new VK, I'm hooked. I'm going to have to get a subscription now. I've been
flipping through and a few things have jumped out. design number seven (a
ribbed mock turtle neck) caught my eye, especially since they knit it in
woolease and wouldn't you know I have a whole bunch! I never have any money,
being a poor college student, but I found some woolease on sale a few months
back when I had a little money to put towards my stash so I seized the
chance. my only problem is I don't have enough in one color so I thought I
might try doing stripes. is there a good way to do horizontal stripes to
make sure they line up across the body and the sleeves? also, I think I
would like to make it as a turtle neck, rather than a mock turtle neck,
anyone have any idea what would work? I would assume that I would just knit
the neck longer and not sew it down, but I'm not too sure since I've never
done one before.

FOs
I've been knitting up a storm lately, so much reading for all my classes so
I just knit while I read! I made a hat for a girl down the hall, a hat and
matching mittens for one of my roommates (with a very cute diamond fairisle
pattern), a scarf for the other roommate, and just yesterday finished a
scarf for me-I just wish it would get cold so I can wear it!!

WIPs
I have two holiday projects going, but they will probably stay on the back
burner until the end of the month since I'm such a last minute person. I'm
also working on a hat for my physics TA (teaching assistant). I'm always
knitting in his class and he's so great about it so I'm making him a hat
with a physics equation going around the brim, I can't wait to finish it!
I'm also trying to find something good to make for dbf. He has finally
requested an item and I have decided he is worthy-he was praising my
knitting skills recently and bragged to his friends about my then WIPs! he
got many points for that. the only problem is he won't tell me what to make
him, arg. I'm hoping he'll make up his mind soon since I'm threatening to
make him a tea cosy! actually, does anyone know where I can find a pattern
for golf club covers? hmmm...

hope everyone's knitting ventures are going well! keep sharing stories cause
they are all so great, reading everything on this list has made me both
laugh and cry, and I now share these stories with everyone-there are some
that even non-knitters can appreciate!

happy knitting!!

Well, they are finally online!  http://www.crafterschoice.com.  Good part is
that those of us who are members can accept or decline our monthly choice
right online and get and update on our account.  Finally!  Only thing I
question is that my monthly mailing has books not in the online selection.
Not sure what that means, especially since I wanted one of the books in the
leaflet and couldn't "choose" online.  ::sigh::

Charlotte, been reading about your pattern in Knitters.  Congratulations!
As a machine knitter I usually favor larger swatches than smaller due to the
large changes in gauge in coned yarns (the wax coating adds an extra twist
when you wash/block).  But, the coating on superwash doesn't necessarily add
to the growth difference you mentioned.  I would ask what type of wool?
Merino?  "regular" wool (commercial yarns usually don't distinguish the many
types of sheep and simply say wool)?  You all force me to look more closely
at that issue of Knitters :-).  Only pattern that personally attracted me
was the Elizabeth Lavold pattern which is quite stunning and on my "one day"
list.

Stitches East:  never gave my report.  I took classes by Melissa Leapman,
Sally Melville, Joan Schrouder, Susan Gualiammi and Margaret Fisher.  I must
say I enjoyed each and every class as well as each teacher's presently.  I
highly recommend them all as I learned and grew and enjoyed.  I did not do
damage in the market, however :-).  I have such a huge stash that not much
tempts me these days so ... I left room for the rest of you to go crazy :-).

BAKG website (NYC guild):  it is offline due to a change of name and service
provider.  The new name will be:  http://BigAppleKnitters.org.  I am working
(with help) on the new website and hope to have something online within the
next week.  Since this is "our" (nyc folks) website, feel free to send me
your feedback and comments.
