I just want to be among the first to thank Sarah for doing this for the
list.  I know that she does an excellent job on her site, and this gift list
will be there in the future when we want it -- unlike lists done by previous
people, this one will NOT disappear.  Thank you again Sarah for all you do
for this list and for all of us.

Guild Meeting Report
Meanwhile, we had a great guild meeting last night (Elmhurst, Illinois, home
of the Woolgatherer's Knitting Guild, a TKGA affiliated guild, meeting every
second Thursday).  I gave a program on reversible knitting (with many thanks
to Kathleen Power Johnson, for the class at Stitches MidWest, and Lily Chin,
for her reversible ribbing designs).  This is the first program I've given
where someone came up _right_ after to tell me it was a good one!  It's also
the first time I've seen our whole guild plying the needles to a new
technique during the session.  (proud dance) (brag mode off)

ARGH!

Have you ever been knitting along, discovered an error that you thought you
could just work around, and then been severely disabused of that notion
several rows (say ten or so) later when you learned that the pattern would
NOT accommodate that seemingly miniscule error?  Sigh.
I'm working on a Berroco pattern for Bluefaced Leicester yarn (ahhhhhh, I
love this stuff!), which is based on a k1TBL, p1, k1TBL, p2 rib.  I oopsed
along the way, and did two k1TBL, p2's in a row.  I figured it wouldn't be
obvious enough to see from a trotting horse, much less a galloping one, and
left it go, figuring to fix it when the shaping came for the upper half.
WRONGO!  heavy sigh.  The cable that runs up the center does not accommodate
that teeny tiny change in the pattern.  Not at all.    rrrrrrrrippity rip.

So, yesterday, I managed to move forward, rip all the way back to the cast
on, and finally pass where I'd been at the beginning of the day.

Dragonfly Sweater

Many thanks to those of you who have responded with ideas for the dragonfly
sweater.  It is still percolating in my head, but I promise to post when I
figure it out in the end.

Helen, who hopes to sneak a minute or three in the Tangled Web in Oak Park
today.  (I'm regularly about six blocks away from that shop on Mondays, and
it's not open Mondays!  So, despite looking at it, peering through its
windows, etc., I've never made it past the door. <pout>)

DM & DD Instant Fruit Cap

This is sized for DM and DD pre teen (10/11 yr old)
You will need a 16" circular size #9 needle and DPs to finish crown.
Lion Brand or similar "Thick & Quick Chenille about 100 yds
(I use the weekly 40% off coupon from Michael's to buy this chenille.)

For  DM size cast on 48sts fairly loosely and for pre teen cast on 40sts
Join and knit till 4" up from the roll formed by the stocking st knitting.

Decrease every other row starting with K6, K2tog and a row plain
                         Change to DPS     then K5, K2tog       "
                                                      then K4, K2 tog      "
                                                      then K3, K2tog       "
Now dec each row with K2, K2tog then K1, K2tog and finally K2tog
Thread end thru remaining sts and secure inside by back stitching and
going thru those last sts a couple of times.

This is a no brainer suitable for car pool lines and interesting TV shows.
Very quick depending on how interesting the TV show.  Depending on
the pre teen it might be worn when DM wears hers.  Warning: you may
have to make one each for pre teen girl's group.  Do not make one for
the teacher to match DD's.

(1) I have on what I consider good authority that the best quality 'warming
bags' are made with flax seed as the filler (I can calso give you a list of
helpful herbs to include (a real hit with my chronic fatigue syndrome
support group!). The reason to use flax seed, even though it costs more, is
the high fat content of flax seed, which makes it more heat retentive than
the more starchy grains. The seeds are sooooo slippery - and small - that I
recommend a ling of old pillowcase or other tightly woven fabric.

(2) I am planning to make the Ribbing is No Yoke sweater, too. Futzing
around with which of my many stash yarns to use, I began to think the whole
thing would be more flattering on me if I made the whole thing in rib
(straight up and doen until the yoke shaping, of course). Has anyone tried
or considered this? Or making it top-down instead of bottom-up?

>So I also wanted to know,  would the seed stitch be a bad idea for a=
 neckband?
>Does it stretch much?

I ended up doing the seed stitch neckband using the same size needles and a=
fine, slippery ribbon yarn. I snugged each stitch as I knit but did the=
cast off stitches loosely (this after I had to undo the initial cast off=
row as it was too small to get over the head....).

So far, the neckband looks good. It lays flat and looks like a ribbing=
neckband would. No comment so far on stretch but doesn't seed stitch not=
 stretch much??

One suggestion that I was given for working with a seed stitch on a=
neckband was to knit the first two rows with the same size needles as the=
fabric of the sweater, then switch to a needle one size smaller for two=
rows, and the next size down for two more rows. This way, a gentle=
decrease of circumference is achieved with the same amount of stitches to=
help the neckband to lay flat.

Sara--seriously considering the suggestion of a yarn shop having a sale=
today: ignore the election mess by buying yarn and starting a new project!!

well, this week my landlord FINALLY got around to dealing with the leak in
the bathroom ceiling but that has meant for the last five days all the BR stuff
has been in my living room (i live in a tiny one bedrm apt in parkslope,
brooklyn, ny) and me staying at home for workers who have not shown up
when they said (none of them.... sigh) so a lot of hanging around the apt... i
have a very old cat (16+) who freaks out when strangers are in the apt and i
really dont like strangers in my place without me.... of course its now friday
and the hole is still open in the ceiling although the pipes were replaced (that
took all yesterday and the hole was made on tues morning).... i am not sure if
the ceiling guy is coming today and god only knows when the painter will be
here.  i am in a rent stabilized apt (over 10 years now) and thus dont pay the
high rents my landlord gets from most of his other tenants.  the ceiling guy
told me that the high paying tenants get first priority.  but if no one shows up
today i am putting most of the stuff back in the br.... in a tiny LR there is
barely room to move much less swing a cat...

OKC  so with all that waiting around and much watching of CNN (still! can
you believe this!) and after cleaning up and doing paper work and even
raking and clearing out the leaves in the garden, i finally decided to deal with
the buttons on those baby sweaters - i had been trying to find buttons and
hadnt so i sat down yesterday and after about ten buttons made a pattern that
worked.

its cr*chet so if you dont like that just skip on.
Crochet Buttons
chain 3
join with sl st
SC in middle of ring until size of button desired.
sl st the last st.
cut yarn leaving about 6 inches.
turn the circle of stitches into a little cup and run the yarn thru one loop of
each of the SCs and pull to gather the stitches up.
take the yarn and stitch THRU the middle of the stitches you just pulled
together. i make four stitches so that there are four stitches running around
the side of the gathered stitches.  this gives you something to anchor to when
you sew it on the garment.

these worked well in both yarns (tahki cotton classic I and paton's classic
wool) - for each i had to experiment with the number of SCs for the size
according to the yarn and the button hole size but once i got that down...
they go pretty fast.

and i really like the way they look.  especially the cotton ones.  so they are
being wrapped and mailed with their partner blankets = and what a good
feeling.

today i will work on finishing the Fountain Lace stole i started last week for
my godmother/aunt's birthday present... lots of good britcoms tonight and
rainy weather today so that should help... after i put stuff back in the
bathroom of course.  and i must say it did give me an opportunity to totally
clean the walls and give the tub a really good scrub so my bubble bath last
night felt especially clean.

WIPs
- -the other cousin's baby sweater out of my new fav Inca Alpaca yarn in
pretty blue with specks.
- -another stole in horseshoe lace for a sister's 40th bday.
- -fircone shawl for me ... someday. sigh

XMAS list 2000
Sarah - i have a pattern for a tea cosy that i designed and want to contribute
but have to write it up = hopefully this weekend....

palm dbs
i am still working on redoing them... keep tuned.

ok long enough for now
and back to CNN

I'm not doing much knitting but am having fun with socks again.  My fave
pair, so far, is a ribbed modified crew sock (will write up pattern for KList
2000 gift list if I get patient enough)...knitted out of dark olive Lopi
yarn.  I made an afterthought heel and added dark navy Wooly Nylon when I
knitted the heel and toe so the color difference is very subtle, but pretty.
By the way, I much prefer the Wooly Nylon stuff to anything else I've tried
for extra reinforcement on sock heels and it comes in big, fat spools at
fabric stores...in a ton of colors and inexpensive.

Good Evening Knitters,
A friend bought some yarn at a closeout of a LYS.  It is Welcomme
"le soie et lin" 50%silk and 50% flax linen gauge is 22st/29r in 4", and
yardage is 165y/50g ball.  She bought 12 balls.  Has anyone knitted with
this yarn?  Can anyone suggest a pattern for a ladies top, perhaps in a
lacy pattern that would be nice for this yarn?  Thanks so much.

WIP:  I bought some Lion Brand Homespun on clearance and though I like
working with it, this particular batch is now in its 4th resurrection.
First, I made a shawl for my DMIL.  Too heavy. (frog).  Then I started
an afghan.  Too monotonous. (frog).  Next a sweater for my DD.  Too
small!!  Arrgh!!  Last night I started frogging again and I'll knit the
sweater in the largest size.  She likes her sweaters baggy.  My own

Subject: Knit: Another Yarn Search--Brunswick Germantown

Dear Knitterati,

In 6+ years on the Knitlist, I think I've only posted once, and that didn't
really count since we were at Stitches West and I  merely added a short note
on a collective Stitches report on someone's laptop (DD wouldn't let me into
the market unless I posted something). I have responded privately to lots of
questions, though I'm no expert. Anyway, since everyone seems to be looking
for "one more skein" to finish up their projects, I thought I would join the
parade. I would likely never have come out of lurkdom (just as I would never
speak in front of 2500 people in an auditorium), but we'll do things for our
kids that we would never be brave enough to do in our own behalf, right?

Arlene quanahed some Brunswick Germantown in a gorgeous maroon (more winey
than brownish) for me at least a year ago before the Paton's Outlet changed
hands. It was going to be an AS Mendocino sweater for me, but that was before
that particular shade became DD's favorite AND she saw the French Traveling
Cape in IK. So, of course, it became hers and the cape is nearly finished,
but about 6 inches from the end (top of the hood), I am out of yarn. I've
already asked Arlene--she didn't keep any in this color. It is Color 422
(maroon or burgundy), Lot 4, but lot is probably not too important at this
point. If anyone has a skein (or even half!) they could part with, I'd
happily buy, trade, whatever.

Thank you for taking the time to check your archives (I like that term--it
implies value, though also more organization than mine currently enjoys).

BTW, I tried knitting faster to finish the cape before I ran out of yarn, but
it didn't work!

Subject: Knit: Cut and Sew Question

Knitterati,

I need some advice for a friend's project.  I ordered some Tahki Chelsea
Silk from Elann.  65% silk, 35% wool.  The color was a beautiful soft pink
that I look like death in.  I traded it with my friend, who loved the color,
and bought a teal green and made myself the On the Point Vest from the
(?)Summer 1999 Knitter's.

My friend Debbie asked her mom if she would make her the same vest.  Her mom
agreed, and just gave her the finished vest.  Her mom apparently did not
adequately check her guage, because her guage is way off (7 sts to 2 inches,
instead of 4 sts/inch), which made the XL vest more than 6 inches too wide.
The length is fine, because the instructions state to knit to so many inches
rather than number of rows.

Debbie's trying to figure out what to do.  She asked me if she could wash it
in hot water.  I at first thought I'd make a swatch, and we'd experiment
with felting, but felting shrinks length more than width, and it's the width
that's the problem.

Since this pattern has a fairly narrow back above the armholes (the
schematic has the back decreasing from 24" to 13", we decided we could
probably take each side seam in 1 1/2 inches, which will take out the extra
6 inches, and the armholes are still generous.

I've never done cut-and-sew, and I'm still a steek virgin (although there's
a Philosopher's kit in the stash).  I figured if we ran a couple of sewing
machine lines, we'd be able to cut this ok.  Any machine knitters who do
cut-and-sew have any advice?

I thank you and Debbie thanks you.  She really wants to wear this vest, and
treasures the fact that her mother made it for her.  And I probably needn't
add that I'm feeling guilty because I feel like I'm the one that instigated
this.

Knit 'em if you've got 'em!

I tried out this url and it does work, I was able to get to the resources'
page of woolworks but once there I couldn't get, for example, to the
vendors' page because it had woolworks in the title.

I made great progress on the sock I was knitting until i discovered a very
visible mistake and had to rip out a quite a bit, finishing the evening
with less sock that i had started with:(
I managed to buy a 15mm circular needle today just before the LYS shut,
tomorrow is a holiday here.  I have also been offered an 8mm, 9mm and 10mm
circular in trade from another knit lister and look forward to getting
those and reducing my stash at the same time.
I am sharing a flea market table with a friend in a couple of weeks and am
going to sell some needles (inlcuding the much too long for me 15 mm
plastic ones and maybe my mom's 10 mm ones too) and some yarn, mostly the
acrylic and acrylic blend stuff.
Now that I have the 15 mm circular, I am planning to cast on a scarf with 2
strands of the marlene.  Unfortunately I can't remember how many stitches I
used last time so I am going to guess and try 15.
I have temporarily given up trying to find a yarn and needle size that
satisfactorily reproduce the pattern on my daughter's afghan.  The friend
who made it for my daughter when she was born has sent me the gauge that
was in the pattern (it was in an old knitting book of hers) but she can't
remember what needle size she used or what the yarn was either, she is one
of those knitters who has works of beauty and art fall from her needles in
a truly amazing fashion.

Subject: Knit: Koigu and Silk Entrelac Cardigan

Hi, sorry to post the List on this one but I had a list member email me a
day or so ago about some Koigu yarns and pure silk for an entrelac cardigan
that I have on eBay currently.  She was asking about a kimono pattern for
Koigu but I had no info/no pattern.  I now know of a source for the pattern
she'd mentioned but cannot remember her name or addy so please email me off
list.  Thanks.
