Subject: Knit: Lopi and Chinchilla

Hi all,

I have two projects for which I am begging for comments.

Lopi Book #22, Pattern 30 calls for knitting each sleeve in the round. As I
prefer to knit both sleeves at the same time, I have added two stitches to
each sleeve and am knitting these on straight needles. Are there any
negatives to this?

Chinchilla: In my trip to the LYS yesterday, I was looking for a purple
Cotton Fleece to make a hat for my 2 yo. I was not fully fashion conscious
when I bought her a red jacket and purple boots (suede Stride Rites with
lights!), so to pull the outfit together, I was looking for some purple that
I could combine with some stash red. Anyway, the LYS steered me to purple
chinchilla, and recommended I buy two skeins, which makes it a pricey hat
for a 2 yo.

Any design tips for using this for a kid? Any particular hat styles that
will stay on better than another? Can it be hand-washed? (The label says Dry
Clean). Any chance I'll be able to get a hat out of only one skein so I can
return the other?

Also, another LYS-owner told me that Brown Sheep will sell single skeins to
stores--they don't have to buy a bag of ten. (While I realize that my
singular request yesterday for Cotton Fleece may not have been a real profit
maker for them, it would have improved my consumer loyalty). I didn't ask
directly if she would order Cotton Fleece for me, she was far more
interested in selling what she already had in stock. Hmm.

Thanks in advance!

Luanne

Subject: Knit: Looking for pattern and wool

Hi everyone,

I'm wondering in anyone has heard of a yarn called Elenka? Can it be purchased anymore, and
what weight, etc. was it?

I'm also looking for a pattern for a friend who isn't able to contact the list directly. She's
looking for a baby pattern that has gone missing.

"I hope you are having a good day and I really appreciate your help  regarding my missing
patterns.       The baby one is from Caron's Learn to Knit  book that was published in 1978.
It's a mint green layette set and has  bows knitted into the pattern.   Thanks so much.  Anyone
can email me  directly.  Thanks so much.  Sue P. "

Please contact her directly at
susan-pado@postoffice.law.cornell.edu

I know she'd be thrilled to locate this pattern if anyone has it or knows where it would be
available.

Gee, I finally have some FO's just like the 'real' knitters on this list! I finished the
prairie shawl from Cheryl Oberlie's book in a pretty dark teal Muskoka superwash wool. My SIL
is expecting and I hope this will be a nice nursing shawl for her. My first ever shawl. For the
baby shower on Sunday I made a baby sized RR afghan (I just love this pattern now!) a baby
surprise sweater and some socks. All of these things I wouldn't have even known about had it
not been for this list. What an amazing resource you all are!

TIA,

Kathleen (Brrr chilly here in Toronto. Guess it's really fall!)

No matter when you go, there you are! Buckaroo Bonzai

Greetings, Fall Knitters!

The SF Bay Area is having a record cold snap.  Hooray - pull out those warm
sweaters!

Just got back from teaching a Mitered Knitting class at Knitting Workshop
in Sebastopol. Obviously can't say no affiliation, but it was my first time
there (I usually teach locally).  Wonderful selection of yarns & colors &
patterns from basics to luxuries... it's a small shop, but Sandi has filled
it in an irresistible way. I didn't have nearly enough time to browse, so
I've gotta go back. Fortunately, I discovered there is an easy way to drive
through San Francisco on Hwy 280.

The students were just great - knitters are the nicest folks. You knitters
out there who think you are beginners, you know more than you think!  If
you can knit and purl, you can knit anything you put your mind to.

I must recommend classes to both teachers and knitters - it just fires up
your enthusiasm and you come away with lots of new ideas!

So I'm starting a new mitered shawl design... does anyone else have a story
of a project that was inspired at a class?

Jill Vosburg, more ideas than time, as usual!
....Do strangers stop you to admire your sweater?

Hello Knitters!

Haven't had a chance to check in with you all in ages, but here I am.  Still
working constantly, but I've gotten to the point where I can manage some
knitting in my schedule, too.  In fact, this week I've had an amazing week
of finishing up little bits of old projects, and am almost at the point
where I want to embark on something new.

I have a question for those of you who actually know a thing or two about
our beloved friends, the sheep.  What time of year do the little things get
sheared?  For some reason this question has been bothering me since I woke
up this morning and I'm determined to find out.

I am pleased to announce that now that Christmas is a month away, the
holiday knitting bug has struck.  I am finishing up a pair of large and
masculine pop up paws, and about dig out some sock wool to make my mom a
nice tweedy ribby pair of socks.  Unfortunately with such a late start I'm
not going to have time for anything of a grand and impressive nature, but
parents always seem reasonable impressed with little things anyway.

My big knitting adventure at the moment is making the beaded Christmas
ornaments that were in FCEK around 1996.  They really are a heap of fun,
especially arranging the beads at the end (they're just sewn on rather than
knitted in, but still quite impressive to people who don't know that..)

Well, if I'm going to get any knitting done, I'd better go.  Have a great
day, everyone.

Gillian, it Pittsburgh where it's going to SNOW!!!  (yippy!)

Subject: Knit: Hello Again from Connecticut!

Hi all!

This is Elizabeth from Waterbury, CT for those with
looong memories!  I'm so glad to be back on the list!
I'd love to correspond with any CT knitters, or LDS
knitters  :-)

I am currently finishing up the square braided-edge
baby blanket form knitting.about.com,with two strands
of worsted and size 13 ndls.  I chose white and baby
blue and it is working up very pretty.  I also have a
crocheted afghan in the works, a basic mile-a-mibute
pattern.

I also wanted to let you all know that I have a home
page that features a free pattern, either knit,
crochet, or tatted, each month, as well as links to
catalogs, free pattern sites, and more!  It can be
found at http://www.oocities.org/knitknutmeg and I'd
appreciate any new links you might have, as well as a
hello in my guestbook!

Peace,
Elizabeth

Subject: Knit: Aviator Cap - attention: bugs

Hello all,

First of all, my apologies to those of you who had already copy the Amelia
Erhart Aviator Cap pattern.

I detected bugs in both written directions and chart. Last but not least, I
did count the cast-on as row 1. That's what you get being ambitious to
write a pattern with directions for righties and lefties in one afternoon.

I'm working to fix my mistakes. Pages will be off-line until I'm confident
enough I won't feature a complete mess instead of a pattern.

Thanks,

Flor

Subject: Knit: how well do Homespun and Imagine launder?

I had hoped to avoid doing any Christmas knitting, but have been roped into
knitting a poncho for a 10 year old niece. I have spent the morning scouring
all my recent magazines and catalogs looking for a simple poncho pattern.
She wants the more traditional triangular shape, not the 'two rectangles
sewn together' shape. She has requested soft baby pastels.

I see Berroco has a simple poncho pattern in one of their New Basics pattern
leaflets, but the yarns called for would cost me from $65 - $100 dollars,
which is completely out of the question for a gift for a 10 year old girl.
Looking at the yarns called for, they seem similar to Lion Brand' s
"Homespun" yarn.  I also found a pattern in the most recent FCEK which seems
to fit the bill and it calls for Lion Brand's "Imagine".

I have never used either Homespun nor Imagine yarns. I looked at Kim
Salazar's site to see what comments people had made about them, but there is
no information on how well they hold up to wear and laundering.

If you have used Lion Brand Homespun or Imagine in a garment, can you please
tell me how well they have held up to wear and laundering? Are they still
looking good, or have they pilled and fuzzed and you're sorry you used them?

Help! I have to get started pronto, or I'll never get it done in time!

Hi All,

I am so excited!!!  For the last 2 years, I have stayed behind - but next
year I'm attending the Gone Stitchin weekend at the Bayview Resort in
Ontario.  It's sponsored by a few LYS & this year I'm taking classes with
Lily Chin, Rick Mondragon & Laura Bryant.  I wanted to take more classes,
but this is only a weekend getaway!  Check out the website for more details.
www.gonestitchin.com  The class schedule isn't on-line yet, but should be
soon.  I reserved my space to that I don't get stuck at home again.

I am working on a sleeveless turtleneck out of red Berroco Furz for my DH's
office party.  This yarn is so soft & touchable, I think I'm going to call
it my "Get Lucky" sweater. - lol.  And to go with it, a Fiesta Yarns shawl
(Thanks Julie!!).

On a recent trip to Lake Tahoe, I visited The Wool Tree (no affiliation, but
very satisfied customer) and purchased Colinette's Journey to America to knit
Melissa for my DD1.  DD1 selected her own colorway and the owner was so
helpful and patient in letting us take our time making her selection of
purple (her favorite color) fushia and teal solids and several variegated in
different textures.  Thank goodness there was tv for the guys to watch the
game so they did not rush us!  Well, the box arrived with every skein neatly
wound into cakes!  I was not thrilled with the colors, but diligently began
knitting the back of the sweater.  Well, to my surprise, it is lovely. The
colors and the design on the back is far prettier than I expected.  I rush to
finish dinner and shower so I can work on it every night after work.

My "hanai" daughter asked me what kind of bulky knitting machine to buy.  She
is a nurse, going back to college and just doesn't have time to handknit.
Being mostly a hand knitter myself, I thought I might ask off-line of course,
if any of you would make recommendations.  I do have 2 knitting machines,
neither of them a bulky... She lives where it is very cold!  Please let me
know what you recommend.

Aloha & Happy Knitting from Judy in Honolulu, who is frantically trying to
get the newsletter out for November in new software so I can print it on the
new color laser printer!  Oh, the pictures are gorgeous!

Meantime, DD has started her military duty and I am still working on a
mistake stitch rib scarf for her to keep my mind and hands busy. The news
from this end of the world continues to be disturbing and I fear things will
not be resolved in a peaceful manner soon.

Not much else to add this time.  Maybe next time will be better.

Subject: Knit: Question about a Knitter's (Fall 2000) pattern

I left the magazine at a friend's, and thus I'm at a loss when ordering
the yarn for a sweater for my mom. So, if anyone can help me, I'd
appreciate it!

For Sally Mills' "Hues in Horizontal" pattern, can anyone tell me:

1) how many skeins are needed in each of the 5 colors for the largest
   size?

2) what the finished chest is for the largest size?

WIP:

I'm done with the body (but not the sleeves) for a sweater of Trendsetter
Fresco (a weird yarn that's a thick-and-thin wool in a black nylon mesh).

Today, as it's very cold at work, I'm wearing it as a vest.

Subject: Knit: Thanks and Sweater of Democracy

Thanks to everyone who responded to my questions about Lion Homespun colors
and stores! I'm in awe of the number and kindness of the responses I got.
It turns out that P&S Fabrics at 355 Broadway (4 blocks below Canal) in NYC
sells Homespun. I looked st Antique, which was suggested by a few people,
but it looked too distinctly feminine to me so I went with Modern instead
(bright blue, green and black).

WIP: I was so nervous while waiting to hear all the US election returns
last Tuesday that I started a new project to keep myself occupied. It's a
top-down raglan (from woolworks.org) in a blue cotton I had in my stash.
Since the election didn't happen as we all expected it to, I now have the
chance to finish the sweater before we find out who our new President will
be! I'm calling it my Sweater of Democracy because I'm using whatever I had
to work with, I'm undoing things when I make a mistake, and it may or may
not fit when I'm done.

Thanks again!

Subject: Knit: mohair afghans

Alright, y'all, got a confession to make.  After saying I was making my
sister a Kaffe Fassett-pattern afghan in mohair multicolors for my sister
for Christmas, I started to have second thoughts.  It was turning out
gorgeous but way beyond what I'd made my other siblings when it was their
turn for an afghan for Christmas (we rotate years; there are six of us.)
Didn't want to step on any toes. But what really got me was the idea of
Anne's five-year-old identical twin boys getting their fingers into all
those hundreds of ends woven into the back of the afghan and pulling them
out and unravelling the whole thing.  And you know they'd have a ball doing
it.  One kid might not, but two tend to egg each other on.  They are
incredibly cute, but they are little, they are boys, and there are two of
them.

I called my not-so-local YSO to see if she had any green or blue mohair that
would go well in the project, and it turned out she had a cone in navy, 2
lbs' worth.  I had a cone of denim-blue alpaca.  Together those would make a
great afghan, with no ends in it anywhere except to start and finish.
Wonderful!  So I asked Karen if she'd be willing to mail-order it to me.
The concussion from my car accident is not going away, and I can't drive.
Funky equilibrium.

Although her store is 25 minutes away, Karen Brayton-McFall of the Rug and
Yarn Hut in Campbell, California found another errand to run in my area and
offered to DRIVE IT TO MY HOUSE, and bring along a few other colors to see
if they would go in the KF afghan, too.  Which she did yesterday.  Blessings
on this dear friend!  No affiliation and all that, just needed to publicly
say thank you.  I still can't get over it.  Some people make life so much
easier to deal with, you know?

Anne's new afghan is 75" wide x 8" long so far and absolutely gorgeous, in
the Imitation Lattice stitch in Barbara Walker's Treasury of Knitting
Patterns.  I know she'll love it.  I'm not saying a word about her Christmas
being de-Kaffe-inated.  Sssshhhh.....

Hi all you knittlings. Had to come out of my passive mode to prattle on a
bit about what I am up to.
FO: Finally finished a darling Patons baby quilt done in Sirdar Denim for
the new baby next door born on Halloween. Just getting the nerve to wash it
in Dreft so it will be catless when I give it to him. I want to wash it
first to correct any problems if they happen; and, at the same time, I don't
want to wash it because it might cause problems. Oh Well...

WIP's: I'm taking a mitred vest class and working on one of these vests out
of Noro...incredible colors; I've got one half doneChanukah sock  for my
my BIL; a Colinette Poncho for moi; and a hooded robe on the needles for my
DGS.

I am getting ready to run for a position on my homeowners' Association and
that is taking a lot of my time lately...In fact, last night, I worked on
this election thing all evening and had a (horror on horror) KNITLESS NIGHT.
I hate those, don't you?

Question for those of you who have done Lily's latest shawl: Did any of you
use a different edging other than the fringe. My DD wants one without the
fringe;and I haven't seen an edging that would look as good. Would welcome
your imput. Thanks.

Have a wonderful evening.

Subject: Knit: sewing on Pewter clasps?, WIPs and Misc...

Hello everyone!

Sewing on Pewter Clasps:  My pewter clasps arrived today in the mail for the
Lopi Sweater I made.  After looking at them, I realized that I have never
used clasps before, so I'm not really sure how I should secure them.
There's a picture of them at:

http://www.yarnforward.com/pewter.html

They have a hole at the end...is this the only part I'm supposed to sew
down?  Won't they flap like that?

WIP's
The Scandinavian cardigan and hat from Debbie bliss.  I'm using green and
cream woolease that I bought for 50 cents a ball a while back and am making
the largest size.  Just one more sleeve to go and the hat.  This is for my
old religion professor who just became a grandfather to a little girl at the
end of October.
The Rose Lace stole from the VK scarves book out of handspun.  This has been
put ont he burner for a bit....just sitting in the corner.

Misc:  I tutor reading twice a week to a kindergartener and a second grader
(one at a time.)  Today was a "Free day" , so I brought my drop spindle
along with samples of wool, alpaca, and dog.  :)  Nicholas had a great time
making yarn.  Just little balls, but he was thrilled at the results all the
same. I  drafted while he spun the spindle.  He mentioned that he almost
bought a Learn to Knit kit, but that his parents told him it was too girly.
Sigh....what a shame!

Yesterday I wrote in praise of Dawn Brocco's 'Almost Aran Jacket' in the
Knitter's Digest (I believe March 2000) and I spelled her name wrong!
Sorry, Dawn, and anyone who might have been misled looking for the pattern!
I continue to think it is a wonderful pattern - I have finished the entire
body (knit and cast off together, ball ends sewn in) in two days, and
anticipate the sleeves taking only one day knit down in the round from the
shoulder. The I-cord and zipper, though, I will be altering - I did one
neckline's worth of I-cord over the summer and that is quite enough for me
for the year! I'll see how it blocks out and then edge and make button
bands or other closure as may inspire me! Linda, Atlanta
