Hello Rebecca!
Pewter clasps have 3 holes on the outside edges of each part of the clasp
set. I sew them down with unwaxed quilting thread, especially if I have it
in a color to match the background fabric where they are being sewn on.

Hello Linda!
Well, I guess I flew through the last digests, being busy with the Gazette,
and didn't notice my name!  It's OK, I get so many knitters spelling it
Berroco, instead of Brocco, maybe it would be easier if I used my maiden
name of Brewster?!

I'm so happy you like that jacket, whose original name I called "Faux Aran"
jacket, which I thought had a sophisticated flare! Any I-cord edging can get
tedious, so it's understandable to change the edging treatment! I love using
3 rows of sc, then working a surface slip st in a  contrasting color along
the middle row of sc. It's quick and firm, especially for a zipper.

Happy Knitting!

Subject: Knit: Dry Eyes & Knitting

I'm so upset I don't know where to begin.  I've been having an eye
problem lately  ( I wear contacts ), and to make matters worse, my eye
doctor of 30+ years has recently retired.  He was an optometrist.  Now
that I have to make a change, I decided that it might be better to use an
opthamologist.  Anyway,  I made the appointment and went to be checked
out today.  It seems that I have extremely dry eyes.  He put test strips
in both eyes.  Normal eyes register a "10".  I registered a
"0" in one eye, and a "1" in the other eye.  I was given drops to use for
the next two weeks, then I have to go back and have tear duct "plugs"
inserted into both eyes.  The mere thought of this is giving me a
headache.  And, I can't help thinking how this will affect my knitting (
intense use of eyes ).  It's sooo hard to change doctors after such a
long and good relationship with one.  If anyone on this list has had
"plugs" inserted, PLEASE e-mail me off list.  I really need some
reassuring.  I can't help wondering if I chose the right doctor.   Thanks
so much for your help and understanding.

Subject: Knit: Shawl sizes

Hi Knitfriends,

After a glorious fall it is finally turning into sweater weather in the
sunny south.  We are supposed to have our first frost tonight and highs
this weekend are only going to be upper 40's - low 50's instead of the
70's we have been enjoying.

I am furiously trying to finish Christmas gifts to deliver over
Thanksgiving.  One is a Rosemary Hoffer Bell shawl from some Brunswick
Monteray (cotton/mohair/acrylic) for my SIL.  She is about 5'8" tall and
probably a size 14 - 16 and I have no idea how large to make the shawl.
I want it to be big enough to "wrap" around her as she will use it for
warmth on those cold mornings before it warms up to the pleasant 60's
(she lives in GA).  But, I don't want it to be so big it is cumbersome.
The ones I have made previously have all been for my oldest daughters or
myself and we are all very vertically challenged.

Can anyone give me an idea of a good size for a triangular shawl for
someone her size.  I need length across top (wingspan) and length from
top to point.

I just finished several quickie sweaters - one is the sleeveless thick
and thin top from fall Family Circle.  I did the smallest size in
LionBrand Woolspun - it is really cute and only took 3 skeins.  I will
make one for my other two DD's also.  I also made the sleeveless, hooded,
zippered vest from Fall VK.  I used Tahki Fargo instead of the Waterspun
as I didn't want anything real heavy.  The Fargo worked great and it is
light as a feather.

DD3 just sent me another shipment of yarn from NZ - Jo Sharpe, and
Naturally Tussuck.  Alas, my personal NZ yarn shopper is about to leave.
She will be backpacking in Fiji, Tonga, and Samoa beginning next weekend
and will then fly home Dec. 22.

Of course it will probably take me 5 years to make sweaters from the yarn
she has sent over the past 10 months and maybe by then I can go buy my
own! <bg>

Back to the bell shawl, hoping I am about finished!

Hi again, Knitters,

RUNNING OUT OF YARN, OR BRUNSWICK GERMANTOWN REVISITED

I've decided to go with my original plan on DD's cape, which was to take out
the hem and reknit that with another yarn (either from the intarsia fleur de
lis or stash), then use the raveled yarn to complete the hood (since it
shows, and the hem won't). I started on that last night (but when people talk
about doing that on the list it always sounds like it's a much quicker
process than I have ever found it to be). I was mostly just being lazy in
trying to find some on the Klist. Public thanks to both Judy Sumner and
Claire in Atlanta who tried to help me, but neither had exactly what I
needed.

OTHER WIPs

Meanwhile, I've been working on yet another pair of Joan's Socks for a young
Girl Scout friend of mine. It seems like I've made a hundred pairs!  These
were the first socks I ever made back when Joan Hamer first posted the
pattern (thank you, Joan!) and absolutely everyone has loved them. All things
being equal, I can normally turn out a pair in two evenings. But not this
time (sigh). BTW, I've lately used one strand of Woolease with one strand of
(hold onto your hats!) Dazzleaire. It is NOT easy on the hands to knit, but
wears much better (because of the nylon in the Dazzleaire, I think). But be
warned, one skein of Dazzleaire will not be enough for a pair of adult
woman-sized socks.

My Pacific Northwest shawl has been stalled for months--I made a mistake in
the trees, decided that MY trees could be swaying in the wind and pressed on.
But it's been nagging at me and now that I need to fix a problem I *think* I
have with the fish, I'm thinking I'll just frog all the way back and start
again so it will be perfect. To all who have placed pics of their finished,
perfect PNW shawls, thanks for reminding me that I'll be happier not to have
to make excuses, should I *ever* finish this puppy.

More about other projects next time, I've rambled enough. Thanks again to
Judy and Claire.

Dear Knitters:
Last week I expressed curiosity about other people with Optic Neuritis and
how it had affected their knitting, and this week I would like to extend my
question to anyone with a serious eye illness. I was able to help myself cope
with some pretty unpleasant symptoms with knitting, and believe this is
probably common among knitters. Actually, I'd be interested in anyone who
believes that their physical health has been improved by knitting.
OKC:
WIP's -- about a million. I'm finishing up a blue ribbed cardigan but have
been stuck in the middle of the first sleeve for a week and a half. I am also
knitting a big sweater out of oatmeal-to-taupe novelty yarns (that Grignasco
Plume is lovely, and I think Mokuba makes the best tape). Out of some Winter
Cotton that was supposed to be used for Charlotte Quiggle's Ribbing Is No
Yoke Sweater the lace bug has me and I am knitting a big tunic. It's a lot of
fun.

Hi Luanne -

Oh, how my DD and I both loved the little purple boots from Stride Rite that
she used to wear! Enjoy them while you can, because when they are 8, the
shoe selection dries up and gets boring.

Your daughter will probably love the soft, fuzzy Chinchilla yarn on her head
more than she would have the Cotton Fleece, so don't worry about that. I
would bet people recommend you make her a fruit cap with the little rolled
cuff. They are cute, but substitute an inch of ribbing for that rolled brim
and you have a hope of the hat staying on your DD's head! I made a cute
eggplant cap for my DD when she was that age, and it was darn cute, but a
breeze would whisk it off of her soft, fine hair. If you have a bit of plain
yarn to do the ribbing in (maybe the stash red?), the better hugging power
it would have.

You may just be able to squeeze a cap out of one skein. I have read on this
list of people who handwash Chinchilla and when has dried, they give it a
brisk shaking to restore the fluff. Who wants to dry clean a toddler's hat?!

Good knitting,
Betsey

Subject: Knit: Lopi and Chinchilla

Hi all,

I have two projects for which I am begging for comments.

Lopi Book #22, Pattern 30 calls for knitting each sleeve in the round. As I
prefer to knit both sleeves at the same time, I have added two stitches to
each sleeve and am knitting these on straight needles. Are there any
negatives to this?

Chinchilla: In my trip to the LYS yesterday, I was looking for a purple
Cotton Fleece to make a hat for my 2 yo. I was not fully fashion conscious
when I bought her a red jacket and purple boots (suede Stride Rites with
lights!), so to pull the outfit together, I was looking for some purple that
I could combine with some stash red. Anyway, the LYS steered me to purple
chinchilla, and recommended I buy two skeins, which makes it a pricey hat
for a 2 yo.

Any design tips for using this for a kid? Any particular hat styles that
will stay on better than another? Can it be hand-washed? (The label says Dry
Clean). Any chance I'll be able to get a hat out of only one skein so I can
return the other?

Also, another LYS-owner told me that Brown Sheep will sell single skeins to
stores--they don't have to buy a bag of ten. (While I realize that my
singular request yesterday for Cotton Fleece may not have been a real profit
maker for them, it would have improved my consumer loyalty). I didn't ask
directly if she would order Cotton Fleece for me, she was far more
interested in selling what she already had in stock. Hmm.

Thanks in advance!

Luanne

The new version of the aviator cap pattern is online. Hoooooope I'd fix all
my stupid mistakes. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

To compensate my pattern frustration I received today a parcel from
Germany. Lovely regia yarn, including the new Mini Ringel, a batch of Inox
greys and mag/booklets. Well, this bulky fashion trend is attacking
worldwide. Current Verena seems very close to Vogue mag many of you had
comment here. In a page about the fashion hits (no patterns) guess what is
there: Alexander Mc Queen "the gold fleece" awful sweater, that one that
looks a Frankensteinian hybrid between a top model and the sheep Dolly.
Omigod! Then, I start to browse two Lopi booklets and ... suddenly those
sweaters seem to be knitted on needles #5. Just checked the directions for
the cover sweater: back and front on 30 sts. Sleeves: cast on 17 sts ...
Wow!!!!!! I'll never knit anything from that mag, I think. But it has
patterns for the socks Regia uses in its boots ad. To those interested,
they are made with two strands of 4-ply yarn.=20

All in all, yarn for three pairs of socks, seven needles sets, three mags,
cute cat paws stoppers for socks and one H=FCttenschuhsohlen (socks sole???)
for $87, including shipping, was a great deal, huh? :)))))

Thanks for your patience and support.

Hugs,

Flor

Mine definitely has. I have rheumatoid arthritis in my hands (I'm only 30)
and if I don't knit and/or spin for at least an hour a day I can really
feel it. If I do spin or knit for for an hour a day I have almost no
symptoms at all. I still can't open tightly sealed jars, but then, I never
could <G>

I've also heard that knitting can slow down the deformity of the joints
that arthritis can cause but I don't know if this is true. My index fingers
are beginning to twist minutely but I don't have any deformity in my joints
yet, thank the goddess.

Bonus round today. I made my almost annual trip in to not so LYS
and  what sensory overload! There was so very many new trendy
yarns to be had and I was in heaven. After purchasing a few must
haves..the LYS owner informed me my card thingy was finished
and I had $75.00 knitting money to spend (!!)... It is a card system
that after 10 purchases the  total amount is tallied and 10% is
funded back to you for future purchase!  Wow! To think I spent
$750.00. on.... uh... yarn in the past 2 years. (keep that secret)
: )
WIP:  I am feverishly knitting on a yoked hat for her highness. A
hat that has a bonus yoke...like a scarf with out being a scarf. It
has a fur trim along the bottom & face. This pattern is from my
vintage collection. I have a thing for old patterns...this one being a
e-bay  find. 1955/60 era.I played all afternoon on the gauge
swatch..then could not stand it. I had to delve in and cast on . The
gauge being 1 stitch off. I need one size bigger than the pattern
went so I reasoned this would make up for it. So far so good.
Looks about right. I am using Idena "Salsa"  It is a bulky  boucle
with a wonderful color span. The yarn only has 35 meters on it so it
is being inhaled  quickly into the texture. When finished, this
"snood" will be a pricey little number...made me think on the
knitlister that was concerned about the cost of 2 balls Chinchilla
being over the top for a toddlers hat...well think of it as the joy of
knitting something wonderful...that's got to count for something.
Having an extra $75.00 in this shop of shops..well Yarn of course. I
bought 10 balls marks & kittens "teddy" a very soft boucle type
yarn, and 4 balls Pelsgarn "funny" a funky expensive  furry novelty
yarn (bright true red). What fun.  My 5 bins are now filled with
today's treasures... lined up along the hearth of my living room. In
my house I enjoy the view of 5 bins yarn...not a fire place.  : ))))
Happy knitting.   Louise

EZ Baby Surprise sweater in 4 colors of Lion Brand Microspun. I have the
split rings and some decorations, but still need a binky in matching colors!
I found a pattern for baby booties, called "Tozy Cozy" that reminds me of
the standard-issue 4-H pattern for slippers. with a little band added round
the ankle. Don't know if I'll do those; sooner or later, this baby set needs
to be DONE.  Hopefully, before the baby herself!

Finished a quick, decorative scarf in Prism or Trendsetter (I can never keep
it straight) "Wild Stuff".  This is the autumn colorway.  I don't know why I
was so worried about putting the "bend" in the scarf at just the right
place. The ribbon yarn at the "bend" doesn't hold the turn anyway, and it
makes absolutely no difference in the way it wears. So, once again KISS
(Keep It Simple, Sweetheart) should be your guide.
I have an idea for somethig a little different for another scarf, but I
rather need to play with it first.  Something for functional, which a Wild
Stuff scarf most assuredly is NOT.
FO #3 but conveniently forgotten

I finished Jill Vosburg's Diamond Patch Sweater *months* ago, but have
avoided steaming the points. This was done in Fiesta Yarns ribbon in green
and purple. Wow. That's for my daughter. Hopefully, before she grows out of
it.
I'm loading pix up to Photopoint now.  New stuff should be there by morning.
Check "Completed" and "WIPs" I'm thinking of just having a folder for "New

Subject: Knit: Trade Offer/yarn searches and other assorted stuff

Hi Knit Friends-

I will start with the offer and questions and end with the report:

TRADE:  I have 10 balls Ironstone Warehouse Cotton Flake--this is a
textured cotton, very high end in a bright red.  The color is 3611
dyelot 05783.  Each ball is 100g and the information on the ball band
says that the yardage is 328 yards/100g or 1500 yards/lb.  I would
like to trade this yarn for 4 balls of Berrocco Glace in Auburn color
2532 and 3 balls of Berrocco Chincilla in Auburn color 5532.  Please
e-mail if you are interested in this trade.

Yarn Searches for discontinued yarns.  These are not desperate
searches-just curious about them.

Anyone know of a source for Noro's Iro-this is a discontinued yarn.
I saw a swatch of color number 11 and I just love this colorway.  It
is browns and greens and lavenders.  Any yarn stores have this yarn
in stock still or is it lurking in anyone's stash looking to be
unloaded.  Let me know!  I will buy or trade-have huge stash of
purchased yarn as well as all kinds of my own homespun.

Also, I just got my copy of Starmore's Children's Collection from
Crafter's Choice that I ordered a while back and I really like a
couple of the Fair Isles done in her Champion.  I know that all of
her yarns are discontinued now and I am not too worried about finding
something else to use as a substitute but the colors shown in the
book are lovely.  Anyone know of any YS that are selling off their
Champion stocks at good prices.  I would just need 1-2 balls of a
bunch of different colors.  Thanks again.

Now, the knitting report.  I have been having a great time with my
knitting lately.  I have 3 AFO's-all the knitting is done on all
three of them and I am slowly working on putting them together.  They
are 2 matching toddler jackets done from a pattern in the Feb. 99
Knit n' Style-pattern called for Opera but I used Chincilla.  One of
them is dark green for my son and the other is bright purple for my
daughter.  These are double breasted, hooded jackets and are just too
cute--green one just needs the buttons and the purple needs a couple
more seams sewed and the buttons as well.  My twins look adorable in
these--I really need to figure out how to use my digital camera so I
can put up some photos of the twins in all their handknits.  One of
these days-LOL-I have only had the camera for the last year or two.
The third AFO is the Ballerina sweater from the cover of Debbie
Bliss's Quick Baby Knits--I made it in dusty rose Key Largo which is
a cotton/alpaca blend and just feels fabulous.  This one is also for
my daughter.

My major WIPS lately are my just started ones.  The first is sweater
#15 from the most recent Vogue knitting-this is the very simple but
elegant twisted stitch sweater.  I am making mine in a navy blue
merino/silk blend.  The second is a jacket in Noro's Manmosu using a
pattern of Pat's (of www.yarnbarn.com).  The pattern is absolutely
gorgeous, I think, and really takes advantage of the variegated yarn.
There are diagonal broad stripes on the body done just by starting a
new ball of yarn every 15 stitches and moving it over by one every
other row and the sleeves are done in entralac in the round which I
have never done before so will be something new for me.  I have
started with the body for now.  I really need to get back to some of
the knitting for the babies-I have to finish up a plain crew neck
sweater for Sam in some gorgeous bright variegated Charisma yarn I
bought--I am making identical sweaters for the twins with this
yarn-first one is done so I really ought to finish up the second one.
I also ought to start the hooded sweater for my daughter out of the
Lions Brand Homespun that I bought---I made the one for Sam and it
worked up in just a couple of days so I should make her the one to
match that.  If only the babies would just give me more than a couple
of minutes at a time to knit--they love to play together but they are
totally into the toddler "climb on everything even if you don't know
how to get down stage" and the "I don't know what it is but I want
it" stage.  Actually, I am loving this stage-they are just so
incredible silly now-and BTW, they are definitely budding fiber
addicts--they carry my yarn all over the house-too cute!  They are 14
months old.

Well, better run now.

Happy knitting and TIA for any help with the yarn searches and PLEASE
do contact me if you are interested in the trade.
