Hello Shan!
I had knit a swatch once in the Silketweed, but that's as far as I got, as I
found the high silk content made for a very dry feeling yarn which was hard
(for me anyway) to knit - maybe it was tussah or noil instead of bombyx
which is silkier?? It is 52% silk and 48% lambswool, 50 gram/approx 219
yards hank. It is not a lofty yarn. You might be able to use Brown Sheep
Naturespun Sport, which is 184 yds and 50 grams. It advertizes at the same 6
sts/1" that the Freya was knit at. That Freya gauge was not as weird as it
sounds. I used about size 2's with that swatch I mentioned for a tie to get
a similar gauge, yet I know with the BS sport, I would probably be using 4's
or 5's and I'm a loose knitter.

I hope this helsp some.

Happy Knitting!

Subject: Knit: Irish Sweater Purchase

About a month ago, I posted an inquiry about sources for handknit Irish
sweaters.

On November 1st, I ordered two sweaters from http://www.erin-knitwear.ie/
and they arrived yesterday. I am quite pleased with them. A man's 44 and a
child's 28 came to $161 with airmail shipping (including the exchange rate,
according to my credit card).

For comparison, a local boutique carrying handknits prices the Men's Irish
sweater above $195 (depending on size) and the children's handloomed at $50.

There was one dropped stitch in DH's sweater, which I pulled through to the
back and anchored. It was in the purl background area next to a cable, so I
just pulled it behind the cable, and used a similar offwhite to keep it in
place. I suppose I would have been truly frustrated if I wasn't capable of
this minor fix.

In a future life, say 10 years from now, I may find the time to knit an
Irish sweater.

OKC: I'm happily working on my daughter's red lopi, haven't yet started the
purple Chinchilla hat, and just finished a "stash" hat. My 3rd grader's
school does a hat and mitten tree for their charity project. I have a few
stash hats to contribute!

I'm hoping someone knows of a source for Shamrock Buttons.  I'm making the

it in a bright green cotton boucle (sort of a terry cloth look).  Since
buttons are important in this design and this baby's name is Sean Patrick--I
think Shamrock buttons would be perfect.

If you know of a source, or any shopowners on the list have these buttons,
please contact me.  Thanks.

Subject: Knit: dumb question about measurements for a man's sweater

I guess it won't be so dumb once I've asked it:

I've never made a man's sweater before, and only a few women's sweaters
(short attention span and startitis), and I'm going to attempt #20 in the
most recent VK. I'm a little confused about the "upper arm" measurement. Is
it around the upper arm? Because that would mean my DH has significantly
smaller biceps than the measurements call for. I mean, he's no Arnold
Schwartzenegger, but he's at least as built as the model in the magazine. I
just can't believe there's supposed to be 7 inches of ease in each sleeve.
Or is that reasonable?

Thanks,

Magda

Subject: Knit: Need ideas for 4 year old "dress up clothes"

Greetings knit friends.

One of the charities at my office involves selecting a "wish list" from a
local child of a less fortunate family and getting them a Christmas gift.
It is organized through the local community service foundation.

I have selected a 4 year old girl and one of the items on her list is
"dress up clothes".  I was thinking a boa type scarf with a matching hat
might be just the thing.  My only concern is what kind of yarn should I
use?  I want it to be dramatic but I also want it to be easy to wash.
This little girl looks like she is really into the dress up thing as one
of her other items is a Make-up Mindy doll.

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My Colette sweater from Jean Moss' Sculptured Knits is an FO, and what a
nice one it is.  I made it out of Tahki Silk City.  I have three balls
leftover and would love to find a hat pattern to complement the sweater.
I'm looking for a 1930's style cloche hat, one that will cover ears and
keep them warm.  Any suggestions?

Next up, I'm working on the fronts of the Shoowa cardigen from Knitter's
winter 98 issue, in Rauma.  The intarsia isn't as much a nuisance as I
thought it would be.  I've looked through my KF books and am thinking
about doing another, but I'm not thinking about it very hard.  Nila
Piwala, my new cat, is learning knitting etticat.  He was doing pretty
well with the Colette sweater, but intarsia, with all those dangling ends
is proving too much temptation.  He can't resist 'helping' with it so he's
been banished from my lap when I'm knitting, to the satisfaction of the
senior cat in residence.

Last week's trip to the LYS netted perfect yarn to replace my friend's
stolen gloves.  Noro Iroha, in very nearly the same shade of red as the
missing gloves, and even yummier fiber-silk, cashmere and lambswool.  The
store had 8 skeins and fearing I might run short I bought them all.  I
expect the gloves won't take that much, but I wanted to be sure. Twined
knitting uses nearly double the yarn and his hands are enormous.  I'll
wind of a couple skeins tonight and see if I can remember how to do twined
knitting. It's been five or six years since I made them.  Otherwise it's a
trip to the library for a refresher.  I did find my notes for the original
gloves, maybe I'll be lucky and get the same guage.
Once I get these done I'm tempted to make another pair for me,
mine are developing holes in a couple of fingertips, and my red gloves
with the new green sweater are just a little too christmasy for my taste.

Hi All--
I received my calendar this afternoon. Again, Paulette has done a
fabulous job.

On the knitting front, more socks as usual. I've done most of a vest in
Noro Kureyon, which I'm planning to rip out and redo. It's too big, and
I don't like the way the colors stripe. I'm not looking forward to it,
because I think I'm going to have to frog slowly to keep the yarn from
falling apart. I'm not entirely convinced that I like the stuff, so for
the moment, it sits, unfinished, in knitting limbo.

I'll keep you all posted.

Perfect!  This

the mohair.
Too bad, because the Kid 'N Ewe is a lovely yarn to
work with,
especially for this hat. Oh well, now I've got two
more gifts to
give away (and I'll just have to make the hat yet

another gift.  Think somebody's trying to tell me
something?

I love the look and feel of mohair.  Are there any
soft and fuzzy
alternatives?

I want to knit BF a hat for Christmas.
Problem is that he complains my hats are not warm
enough - he usu wears acrylic thermal shop bought hats
with double thickness that seem more windproof than my
knits.
I thought I'd knit a plain watch cap with stocking
stitch top and ribbed bottom (that's turned up) in
black wool. My idea was to then pick up stitches on
the inner side of the hat, about 1inch from the start
of the ribbing, and knit another cap that goes inside!
I considered mohair as I have plenty, and it's warm,
but lulu's comment makes me now wonder if mohair is
itchy to wear for a hat. He has a full head of hair
still....

Has anyone tried anything similar - this way of
knitting double caps is just something I thought of
last night, and I have no idea of the practicalities!

WIP  - mainly Christmas pressies - the usual panic
with lots started and non finished and only 5 weeks to
go!
I have to finish a mohair scarf (1/3 done), socks (1
pr started, one to go), another scarf (not yet in the
realms of the real world) plus slippers, and a few
facecloths to go.
I've also promised a work colleague to knit a winter
sweater for her granddaughter - it started out as a
simple thing quickly knit up.  Now it's started.. its
in red, with sirdar snowflake for a giant snowman on
the front (and it's sparkly!) and I'm intending having
lots of sewn on pockets with snowmen and santas
peeping out. Oh and bobbles and pompoms... MY knitting
is out of the window until at least the end of
December..

I got my calendar today in New Jersey. And I saw Rush Holt in the diner I
went to this morning (for all you other New Jersey voters)!

The calendar is wonderful. Thanks so much, Paulette. I kept trying to get
my kids to look at it with me.

There are a couple of items that I have made myself (Tapflappen vest and
Debbie Bliss bunny) so it is fun to see what someone else's version looks
like - very different.

I am in the middle of the longest ever project for me (not counting afghan
squares). It is for someone much larger than myself. I am using VK Win
'97, #7. It's a fair-isle pattern where the chart is over a 100 lines long
and just about every line is different. I am using Kaleidoscope for one of
the colors (in Anaheim colorway) and Noro Iroho in gray for the other
color. They look quite nice together if I can just be patient enough and
plug away.

In the meantime all my Stitches purchases are sitting there screaming at
me to forget other projects and get to them. It can get quite noisy.

Enjoy your weekends everyone,

week) and have photographed and created a page on my site to journal them.
One piece (a cardigan in Plymouth Wildflower DK) is missing from the page
because I gave it to my Mom before photographing it. I'm asking her to bring
it on Thanksgiving so I can add it.

I just wanted to say that knitting bracelets work very well with a coat,
thankyou! I suppose if you had something with exceptionally long drapey
sleeves it might be a bit annoying, but still a long sight better than
cutting loose a ball of yarn. Perhaps we should take up a collection and
send Leigh one! I use mine all the time.

I have the first of two small local shows tomorrow. I have knit a bunch
of hats and mittens for these as well as some soap. Hope they go
moderately well. I am looking forward to knitting for myself/family
soon!

Happy knitting!

I'm working on Claudia of Countrywool's hat using Lion Brand Thick & Quick
chenille.  How do I join the new skein when I get there?  If I weave it in,
will it hold?  Should I knot it and then stitch the ends with sewing thread
to the back of the fabric?  Not quite sure what to do since the end of my
cast on strand is unraveling below the knot I tied in it.

Preemie hats
The batch of holiday preemie hats went off in the mail on Wednesday.  I
washed them and packed them for shipping and counted them and was one short.
I looked and looked and couldn't find it.  So I sent the pkg, came home and
looked in the scanner!  There was the little rascal.  So back it went into
the basket, first one in the next batch. I'll get going on a bunch more and
will plan to send them in mid December.

Knitting Gloves
After mailing the hats, I stopped by the Village Spinning and Weaving Shop
to see what it was that Marsha wanted me to knit for her.  She'd left me a
note on my answering machine saying that she wanted to ask me about knitting
something.  Well, it turns out that a woman in town raises alpacas.  She
doesn't spin.  Marsha does, so she spun up some gorgeous yarn.  Neither of
the women knits and I don't raise alpacas or spin, but I do knit, so I am
making gloves for the alpaca shepherdess to give to her mother for
Christmas.  I don't know if the woman pays Marsha with more alpaca or pays
cash.  Marsha always gives me the choice of $ or store credit or handspun
and I always take handspun.  I'm hoping that the shepherdess pays in alpaca
so that I can have a hank or two in return for knitting the gloves.

The woman asked for woman's medium size gloves, plain, so I made the cuffs a
cabled rib and the rest plain stockinet.  The first one fits like,
well...like a glove!  The 2nd one needs 3 more fingers and then it will be
finished, too.  Beautiful, beautiful.  I am sure that the woman will be
pleased, as will be her mother.  I think I'd like to make socks if I end up
with the same yarn.  Boy would they be warm!

Marsha mentioned that the woman also wants a scarf.  She was going to ask
someone else to knit that, but if the gloves are finished tomorrow I might
just call Marsha and ask if she has found someone to knit the scarf yet, or
if I should start it with the yarn I have leftover...maybe I'd get an extra
hank for that.  ;)

BTW, this is the first pair of gloves that I've made.  I have had the old
Threads magazine with the article on knitting gloves in it since it was
printed, and I've read it so many times that when I got around to knitting
these, it felt like I'd done many pr before.  I swatched by knitting a tube
(finger) on dps.  Hmmm...14 sts for this finger and 17 for the thumb!  I am
very pleased with the results and will make more.

Calendar
My calendar came today.  I'm 2 days behind on the digests (because I can't
read and knit gloves at the same time) so others have probably reported
getting theirs.  Paulette, you did a lovely job, again.  Really!  Thanks so
much.  It is such fun to see friends and all the beautiful knitting.  What a
talented group we are.

Happy knitting,

Subject: Knit: knit: finishing a vest

Dear everyone,
I am in finishitis mood.  I am up to item number 4 in less than a
month!  I am loathe to brag because I need to get busy and get the
photos onto my web page so you can appreciate them properly.

The present project is a vest, done in fair isle to a chart found in
"More Sweater" by Tackle and Kolstad, in blue and cream, to a tesselated
star pattern.  By the way, the first book "Sweaters" is unavailable
here, told it is out of print.  If anyone has a copy and wants to swap
for merino lace weight yarn, let me know, I'd be interested.

Anyway, the vest shape I calculated with some help from garment styler.
I made the armholes big, as some of my earlier vests were too tight
around the shoulders.  So, the vest was in one piece, knitted in the
round, and shoulder seams grafted, but no bands on, and I tried it.  The
armholes were just way too big, and there didn't seem to be enough width
across the front.  So I said to myself, oh well, lets just finish it,
and it will just have to be imperfect, but I'll do those armhole bands
really wide.  One band on, I tried it to fit again, and hey presto, it
was just perfect!  Just goes to show, my instincts to keep the armholes
big were correct!  So the rest of the bands will be done in a heck of a
hurry now my confidence has returned, and it will be an FO in about 48
hours!

Just goes to show, sometimes you've just got to believe and keep going.
In this case, I was in danger of my old problem of too small and armhole
reoccurring!

Love and knitting,
Belinda in Brisbane, Australia.
