Happy Thanksgiving all, we're at work in T'less Germany.

I usually have a tidy little remainder after making regia socks. I make another pair in plain
color and use the pattern yarn for ribbing cuff, heel and toe. Or make bands, plain, then
pattern yarn. You can always use another pair of socks and if they are slightly
mongrely-looking, donate them to caps-mittens-and-warmy-things for Kids or the homeless.
Nothing like handknits that are washable for warmth. I throw my regia socks in the washing
machine on cold. No problems.

I do have some pictures of regia samples for ref on my site, and hope to get more info on
German sock yarns soon.

Am resurfacing on this list after arriving home from the Orlando TKGA Knit.
There were 5 of us in our group - (2 vans) and we had a wonderful time.   I
didn't get to read any reports from others who attended - but for us there
were no negatives.  Just the trip - 675 miles one way - but with knitbuddies
it didn't seem that far.

I'm also saving the Regia odds & ends, thought I'd combine them with a black
stripe separating them.  Garment yet to be determined - could be more socks
or something for a grandchild.

Happy knitting everyone,

Susan Esser in SC

Catherine - I printed out your AngelBear - it's darling!  Sorry not to have
seen you at the conference.   And thinking about stuffed animals, I want to
personally thank all the Florida Guild gals who must have spent hours working
on the stuffed animal centerpieces.  I have never seen so many, and so well
done!

Anyone else knit for teachers presents? Any teachers out there with
suggestions/comments?

I'm an aid and there's always things to carry so I am making the Lion's
Brand free pattern for the hobo bag as teacher gifts. I am using stash
"stainless steel" acrylic instead of buying cotton and it seems to be okay.
I think it'll stretch a bit more than cotton but I've knitted tightly. Am
also using bright colors to make them easy to spot.

It's an easy no-brainer carry along and you could adapt it to a smaller size
if you wish.  I like it because the handle and bag are all one with no draw
strings.

Greetings!

FO~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I have an FO to report! Today I completed a pair of gloves for my
12-year-old son.
They were knit on a set of 5 dpns--my first in the round project : ),
using less than
one skein of black Woolease, so the cost is a plus. I really enjoyed
making these. I
thought that working in the round would be difficult, but it wasn't. I'm
ready for
socks! This was also my first try at making custom-fit gloves with no
pattern other
than measurements and gauge. They fit well, and he is happy. What else
could I
ask for?

I'm about halfway through with a simple rollneck sweater for my DD,

and asks for
more.

Happy knitting and a Happy Thanksgiving! Life is good!

Subject: Knit: re: DC area shops

Well, I missed the first few messages and I'm actually
over in Maryland, so I don't know much about VA shops,
but here in MD do not forget the Needlework Attic is a
couple of blocks south of a Metro station in Bethesda
and is conviently located next to an ice cream parlor.
On a more serious side, I'm somewhat mobility
impaired, but I was using a cane last time I was
there, so didn't notice if there was wheelchair access
to Needlework Attic.  It's a nice little shop.  Give
them a ring if it's important about access.

The Yarn Shop in College Park is closed now, sadly.
The Yarn Garden in Annapolis is nice.  I haven't been
to the BlackEyed Susan in Annapolis on Annapolis
Street in a long long time, so I don't know if it's
still there - I do know that where it used to be is
where CottonseedGlory the quilt store is now, CSG
having expanded back there.  And although I can't
remember it's name, there used to be a yarn
store/needlework store up in Kensington.  It had
someone's name in the store name.  But it's escaped
me.

Now, that said, I actually tend to mail order shop,
although MDS&W has seem much of my yarn dollar flow
it's way.  I lived up in NH for several years, and was
so used to the shops up there that I still ring them
up and order from them.  I actually mailordered from
Yarns International instead of trying to drive over
there when I found myself suddenly desperate for yarn
the week before Christmas due to a request from my
grandmother and they popped it in the mail to me so
fast that I got it the next day.

On another note - my Pop-Up paws mitten/gloves are
getting much favorable comment.  It's been unusually
cold here and I've been a poster for handknits.  The
mittens are particularly admired by the local postal
workers and others standing in line at the PO.

And oddly, a scarf/hood thing that I invented and
considered a design failure is getting some favorable
reviews.  This thing is sort of half scarf, half
wimple, with a self tying thing at the base.  Last
year was so warm I only wore it as a scarf, but I wore
it as a hood yesterday and today, and it gathered
favorable comments.  Odd!  It was an experiment.  It's
basically stockinette, so that if you take it off your
head and tug on the ends, it rolls itself inward and
makes a scarf, but if you pull it over your head, the
garter stitch edging makes it mostly stay on.  I
thought it a failure because I probably should have
shortened it a couple of inches and I thought it
should stay on more firmly.  It's made of a yarn from
Green Mountain Spinnery - actually a yarn from the
first year they were open - and I think it's llama or
alpaca - so it's quite warm.  I'll have to take a
photo of the thing and figure out a pattern for it.

I ordered up some yarn from Shelfidge Farms (thanks
for the answers to my question about finding the
pattern there!)  Off to cook the stuffing!  Happy
Thanksgiving!  Ann McDonald

I've recently worked up a Star of David pattern suitable for a large
centerpiece, though life has gotten in the way a bit and I haven't written
it up yet. I'm fairly confident that the design can easily be scaled down
to doily or placemat size, and maybe up to chuppah size--since it's a
strictly geometric pattern--but won't know until I try it. Take a look;
your encouragement will get me moving on finishing the pattern...

Greetings knitters,

On this, Thanksgiving Day in the United States, I am grateful that I
have my knitting and that I not cooking dinner for a crowd.

Knitted ornament for Hanukkah

Sue Caskey asked about a knitted ornament for a Jewish co-worker --
how about a dreidel?  Blue and/or white or silver would be more
traditional than gold but what the heck?  Anyhow, I've been playing
with the idea as a cute way to wrap Hanukkah presents.  All you're
looking at is a box with a four sided pyramid at the bottom.

I did one with this as a rough guide (forgive me for lousy pattern
writing):

Cast on 8

Knit in stocking until the piece reaches 1" (or desired length)

Cable cast on 20 more stitches

Divide on to 4 needles, join and begin a sequence of knit 6, purl 1
until sides reach 1" (or desired length).

Next round -- k5, (slip 2 knitwise (the 1st stitch to be slipped
will be the purl stitch) k1, p2sso, k4)3x (slip 2 knitwise (the 1st stitch to be slipped
will be the purl stitch) k1, p2sso (20 stitches)
Next round knit
Next round k3, (slip 2 knitwise k1, p2sso, k2)3x, slip 2 knitwise k1, p2sso (12 stitches)
Next round knit
Next round k1, (slip 2 knitwise, k1, p2sso)4x (4 stitches)
Cut yarn, thread through remaining stitches pull up and knot on
inside.

Stuff with whatever, sew top flap to sides and thread string through
center of top to hang.

Last minute knitted holiday gift ideas

Jennifer Tocker asked about the just one more gift problem.  I usually
have a few spare lace bookmarks kicking about (great way to learn a
lace stitch pattern and and well received gift).  Combine it with a
gift certificate from Borders, Barnes & Noble, etc and you're good to
go and off the hook.

Bulky Knits & Gap

I was on walkabout the other day and was struck by the window display
at the local Gap.  Not only striped bulky knit sweaters but striped
bulky knit hand bags -- looking decidedly amateur in finishing.
Perhaps for those of us who loathe how the bulkies make us look when
worn, we can still be fashionable and not look frumpy.

- -heather

Crossing her fingers that my ISP will not repeat the 30 hours of
bouncing email that followed my last post to the list and getting
ready to take knitting out for a walk on a sunny Southern California
day.

Hi guys,

I just want to wish everyone who celebrates it a happy Thanksgiving and take
a moment to thank the many people who make the cyberknitting community
possible...starting with the listparents (Hi, Ruth, Mary, Amy, Dave,  and all
the others) and amazing Sarah B., Barbara B. and Emily for their incredible
websites that allow us to find hundreds of free patterns, tips, instruction,
suppliers, with just a few mouse clicks so we can benefit from other
knitters' experiences and not reinvent the wheel on our own.  And we can
find, and support, guality small vendors--and designers--who might otherwise
not find a viable market and stay around....

I don't know HOW Sarah and Barbara find the time to build and maintain these
websites, being that I'm barely keeping up with snail mail <g>, but they are
amazing resources.

I'm 4/5 finished with third Christmas project...being a scarf knitted with

finding cute things like a Christmas stocking kit, from a Maine YS, with

for dinner today, it being the responsibility of the other adult in the house
so am glad for some unanticipated "free" time.

Hi all,
*Somewhere* in the last few months of knitting magazines that have come into
my home, I know I saw legwarmers. Of course I didn't need the pattern until
today after a wonderful dinner, my sister says, "You know what you can make
me?" And you all know what her answer was! Perhaps someone remembers what
magazine it might have been in?

Ilze asked about knitted gifts for teachers. I would *love* to receive any
knitted item as a gift. Mittens, a scarf, hat...any and all would be
cherished because one of my student's mom thought enough of me to make
something.

I hope all who celebrate had a wonderful Thanksgiving and to those who don't
have a great weekend!

wanting to substitue a different yarn and think I have enough, but want to
be sure. If anyone knows the yardage, or even can refer me to place to find
it out I would really really appreciate it. You would be greatly reducing
my stash! I tried coatspatons.com, but they didn't list this yarn, only Red
Heart. Go figure.

FO's have finished some Lorna's Laces plain stocking knit socks and
lusekofte cap from Hats On. Love that book!

WIPS- still doing the diagonal cables from IK and only have about 6 more
rows to do on ASs Na Craga front till the neck shaping. I realized that I
am knitting through the front on pattern A and E, but messed up and purled
regularly on WS rows. Oh well. Still looks great and I'll continue this
"mistake" through the back and sleeves for consistancy. I love this.

St. Brigid. For those who said to skip the fringe, did you add any other
treatment? Did you hem it a la EZ? Or just leave it plain? THis is next on
my list after I finish Na Craga. Thanks!
Thanks so so much! I really appreciate the info!
