I was very sad that everyone is jumping to the conclusion that penguin
sweaters are not needed. Being one who has sent several and someone
who
goes right to the source I wrote to the isalnd reserve and the following
is their response:
Hello to everyone, the need for jumpers is not urgent and we do have
a
"bank" of about 1000 however there is an
ongoing need for the sweaters as we usually get a couple of
oil-contaminated birds coming ashore at the evening
penguin parade each week. Sweaters have been arriving at the rate of
about 10 per week (mainly from USA and
Canada) and it has been wonderful in that it keeps our bank of sweaters
constant in case we get a major spill. Not
only that but we do get some sweaters which are too big or the knitting
is too loose and these we put on soft toy
penguins to sell in the souvenir shop. All of the monies raised go
to
the Penguin Rehabilitation Centre and the
South Gippsland Native Animal Rescue Service. Therefore any sweaters
we
receive are very helpful and there
have never been any thrown away. Some have even been put on display
in
The Wool Museum in Geelong. All of
these thing help to create awareness of the plight of the penguins
and
other sea birds in this changing world.
I hope that this answers your queries, I would suggest that you send
any
sweaters by surface mail rather than
going to the unnecessary expense of air mail. We will be most grateful
to receive them.
Best wishes, Lyn Blom.

Several months ago I started knitting a short jacket made from 2 shades
of
Canadiana Colours (butterscotch, and off-white) and a charcoal shade
of
Canadiana. I have misplaced the pattern book and would like to
finish this
sweater for Christmas. As I said the sweater is a short jacket
and I am
pretty sure it is shown on the back cover of the book. There
are alternate
vertical stripes (about 2-2 1/2 inches wide) of the three colours mentioned
above. Does anyone on the list know which book I am looking for
or have a
copy they are willing to sell?

Hello Janine!
It may be that you learned the stabbing way to be better than the scooping
way, but both Elizabeth Bradley's and Beth Russell's books show scooping
cross stitches and other stitches. What is important is even tension,
not
pulling the yarn too tightly so as to not cover the canvas correctly
and/or
distort it; keeping the top cross all going in the same direction;
and not
changing working styles throughout the piece, by switching from working
each
cross to then just working the first part of the crosses, then working
the
second part later, as this makes a different fabric on the back. So,
whatever method (stabbing or scooping) that gets a more even tension
and
better coverage is the one to use, though I think this will vary from
one
person to the next, just as with knitting styles.
Happy Knitting!

Subject: Knit: Koigu Carousel; Turid sweater
Happy Monday to you all!
I recently purchased the kit to knit the Koigu Carousel sweater and
began to
play around with it over the weekend. Has anyone here made this
sweater? I
am a bit flummoxed by the 5th triangle and how to attach it to triangle
3.
No matter how I work it, it doesn't look right -- and triangles 1 through
4
turned out so lovely. Please, if any of you have some insight
you could
share, I would surely appreciate it.
My current WIP (other than the Koigu above, which doesn't count as I
haven't
really started the sweater) is the Lavold Turid sweater from Fall Knitter's.
I have completed both sleeves, the back, and am 1/2 through with the
front.
This is for my mother for Christmas, so I must hurry, hurry.
Anyway, my
concern is that the sleeves look way too long. Have you that
have knitted
this had problems with too long sleeves, or when it is put together,
will
everything turn out okay (I hope, I hope)? I'm really nervous
about this due
to the fact that I won't have time to reknit the sleeves. If
any of you have
advice, please reply.
Thanks to all!

Hi everyone,
Well, I finally finished the Fast Paced Farrow from Knitters Fall 2000.
I
just love how it turned out. We took pics of it yesterday, finally,
as it
took a couple of days for it to dry. I blocked it on my sweater

Just click on "Fast Paced Farrow"
I'm still working away on my Pacific Pullover, I'm up to the neck area
now.
I'm not sure if I will have it finished before Chrismas, I hope so
because
I'd like to wear it over the Christmas holidays, it's such a pretty
design.
For fun I decided to make some knitted toys for my son for Christmas,
he's
partial to fish, so I'm knitting up the shark and little fish found
in Kath
Dalmeny's knitted animal book. They are so cute. If I have
time I'm also
going to knit up the little diving man.

Dear knitlisters,
I want to send out a special thank you to all of you who knit hats for
preemies and other babies in need of hospitalization upon being born.
As I mentioned in my email on Sunday, my DS's baby was born a week and
a
half early. Little Taylor had a bit of a rough start. After
experiencing
two minor seizures and difficulty breathing, he had to be transferred
to
Dartmouth Hitchcock -- a wonderful hospital with a gracious staff that
took
excellent care of my nephew and my sister. When my DH and I went
to see
Taylor for the first time I noticed a basket full of handknit baby
hats on
the counter as we entered the ICU nursery. It touched me so deeply
to see
those hats having read all the emails that have come through the knitlist
from those who knit preemie hats and those who are looking for patterns
so
that they can do so as well. The work of your needles is greatly
appreciated by the families of the tiny ones who wear those hats!
Thank
you -- the kindness with which you knit is an amazing gift.
Fondly,

Over Thanksgiving we visited my parents in Central Illinois and
saw their
pictures from the summer when they took some of the grandkids camping.
In
Rock Island, Illinois (one of the Quad cities), at the Quad City Botanical
Gardens, there were several very life-like statues. One of them
was of an
elderly lady sitting on a bench knitting. Her knitting bag sat
on the
ground next to her, and on the bench was a letter telling about a new
grandchild on the way (or just born - Mom couldn't remember which).
I couldn't find a mention of these on the Garden's web site, so possibly
this was a seasonal showing.

Subject: Knit: The Washrag Tragedy -A Knitting Story
Marge was troubled. Why were those children so quarrelsome today?
Perhaps
the promise of Ice Skating later could compel them settle down to act
like
young ladies. Having just lost their father, her neices were
in her care
until all the arrangements could be made. Her sister needed the
break to
compose herself so their questions could be answered with balanced
and caring
words. The questions had begun already to come in spurts, and
then in the
midst of the answer they had run off to work a puzzle or make sure
their turn
at the computer wasn't being usurped. They were reacting by playing
as hard
as they could play. Oh, children can be so difficult.
Now where is that dishcloth? she thought absently glancing around the
kitchen. The sounds of the children escalated in another room.
Absently
she pushed the last of the eggshells into the sink. The
meal had been
eaten amid much discussion about it's high and low points in comparison
to
other nutritious and savory meals in their collective memories - the
oldest
being all of 8. Glancing at the clock she noted the irony of already
cleaning
up a meal in the space of time that it generally took her to drink
two cups
of coffee and think about what to wear to work that day . How
do working
women with children do this? she thought. Flipping
the switch, the garbage
disposer met with some resistance. Hmmm thought Marge everything
will be
disagreeable today. Stopping the mechanized garbage disposer,
she reached
into the trap wondering what the culprit was and who had done it.
There
snarled in the blades, her handknit dischloth. So carefully made,
and
recently bleached it had performed admirably but the loose threads
told the
tale. It was a goner. After all that work, it must have
gone down with the
dishwater. She examined it carefully, and then dropped it in
the trashcan.
Glancing around her well scrubbed kitchen, listening to the sounds of
healthy
children struggling with the rules of life learned from one's own siblings,
Marge realized that the dishcloth was not so important and could be
replaced.
But it was still a good excuse to put a healthy dollop of Baileys
into her
coffee and let a little more of the morning pass without resistance
from her.
There would be many mornings and evenings like this now, the
children would
fill a space in her life she was not aware needed filling, but they
were
family and needed extra attention now. And her sister who was
suddenly a
single parent, would need respite.
So Marge picked up the cardigan she had begun for Carolyn, one of the
6 year
old twins in the other room and examined the row. Finding the
place, she
began to knit, listening to the latest debacle on why we still don;t
know who

who
were afraid.

Subject: Knit: Christmas gift, Furry kitty hat for toddler
Hello knitlisters,
I am beginning to think that the world may be coming to an end. I have
done
something that I never thought I would ever do as long as I live. I
made up
a pattern, and I am giving to the list as a gift. I am a wee bit
trepidatious about doing this. I am not a pro folks, I am not even
a rank
amature! I am somewhere way below that!
The story is, DH and I went to Chicago after Thanksgiving for the sole
purpose of a weekend practically alone (the inlaws took the oldest
8 to a
play and we only had the youngest pictured on the link below) and to
do
some serious stash enrichment.
Thanks to Anne who listed Chicago area yarn stores, we hit several nice
ones. I dropped quite a bit at the Weaver's Workshop. I'll go back
there
again!
Then at another one, I think the Yarn Boutique, which will not be at
that
location after January, I saw an adorable little bear hat. Had to make
that! Tha Finnish lady who ran the store made it and had one ball left
of
Sirdar Snowflake, which gave it a sherpa-like look. I bought that.
Asked
her about the pattern, she didn't use a pattern. So I made one up last
night. We just put it up with a picture on our website. I hope someone
can
make good use of it. I think it turned out really cute.

Hi Everyone!
Knitters arrived today in Virginia, and guess which aran afghan square
was
the first one listed..........! Congratulations Judy; the square
looks
great, and I am so glad to see what you look like now!
OKC: I have just started Kilronan from The Celtic Collection.
This sweater
was my motivation to get my holiday knitting finished this week (I
never
finished early before). I think the sweater will go slowly, but
it will be
well worth it.

Your hat is *too cute*! I wish I had someone small enough to make it for.
OKC: I am hard at work on my KPS topdown pullover. I am really enjoying
working
with the Cascade 220. I 've finished the body and nearly all of one
arm. I hope
to finish in the next few days...if my arm holds out.

Subject: Knit: Chinchilla Questions
Hi All!
Busy working on my Christmas knitting, but I need to ask for some advice.
I just made my first chemo cap from Berroco Chinchilla, just to see
what
all the talk was about. I love it, and can see where this super soft
yarn
would be so soothing and comfy.
As I was knitting it I realized that Chinchilla would make nice scarves
for
the teenage girls on my list. So first question - how many balls will
make
a moderate length neckscarf - not too long, but not too narrow either.
Can
I get by with two balls per scarf?
Question 2 - Will plain stockinette work for a scarf, since this is
a
chenille, or would garter stitch be a better choice? I don't want it
to
curl, but I know that chenille tends to stay flatter than garter. Since
the
hat was knit in the round, it's a little hard to tell.
Thanks in advance for all the wonderful advice!!

Subject: Knit: Thanks for the 2-stranded Joan's WE socks pattern!
Dear Knitlisters,
Thank you to all of you who responded so quickly and kindly to my search
for
Joan's 2-stranded WE socks. On an extremely stressful day for
me, my fellow
knitters out there made my day SO much better! Thank you so very
much.
I have gotten just a tad bit nutso on my choices for Christmas gifts
for the
women in my family. First, it started out that I would give them
bath and
body stuff. Then, I decided to add a nice cotton chenille facecloth
or two.
Then, I decided that based on the colors I could find of the
cotton
chenille, I would make sure the colors of the bath and body stuff would
match the facecloths. And then, finally, I decided that the women
also
needed warm socks to wear after luxuriating in their bath and body
stuff
(candle too, no less), using their matching facecloth. The clincher
is that
the socks, too are going to match the rest of the kit and kaboodle.
I
really am a sick woman.
And to think I spend hours every day photographing and printing portraits.
And work at making sure people do not look green, red, blue, or yellow!
This color thing is getting out of hand...
Thank you dear ones out there for coming to my aid. I am forging
on to
making matching sets of facecloths and socks. I think I'm just
trying to
maintain some sanity within my insanity!
From out here in the boondocks of Oklahoma,
Tina
