I am going to check out patternworks catalog and order some kind of a metal button, I don't like those kiddie plastic buttons much and this will keep me on their mailing list. Got some EBay yarn Monday that I had won a while back. The kids helped me rip open the packages when I told them it was something special that I really really needed. You should have seen their faces. "Yarn? You don't need more yarn!" But then they played with that too. It's Blue Heron yarn in Eggplant which is a gorgeous dark pepple green colorway and I won cotton chenille so I ordered rayon and beaded cotton to do some weaving. I should have enough for a jacket. This is really gorgeous stuff and isn't it nice that it came now? Check them out, they have a website and put stuff up on Ebay pretty regularly which has always been a better deal for me. No affiliation etc, etc. I also got two big cones of mohair/wool from another seller for a coat I want to knit. They are very muted colors and appear to be older yarns by the labels, but in good shape. I am planning a lot more knitting for the Old Aunt this winter. Since reading the Philosopher's Wool book and viewing their video, I have come to prefer their "weaving" technique rather than having floats on the wrong side. Does "weaving" use more yarn? If so, how much more? It seems to me that weaving the yarns as opposed to carrying theme as floats would indeed us more yarn. Am I wrong? What do you think? Dry Eye Update.......delete at will. So many of you nice people have written to me to ask that I give an update on my eye problem. It's easier for me to post to the list rather than to respond individually eventhough I would like to. Anyway, yesterday I was given a thorough examination by a second opthamologist who specializes in problems of the cornea. My eyes were dilated, eye pressure tested, dry eye test given, and BP also tested. All tests results were normal excepr for the "dry eye" test. The diagnosis of extreme dry eyes was confirmed. Probable cause........menopause. Isn't aging wonderful? I was told to change my lubricating drops to another brand that is thicker, and to use them more frequently throughout the day. I also have to give up wearing my contact lenses till this problem is resolved. If ever. If I don't, I run the risk of doing damage to my corneas. I will be returning to her for a follow-up in several weeks to be re-evaluated at which time the possible need for plugs will be discussed. Hope I haven't bored all of you. Have a great knitting day. Due to a move two weeks ago, I'm also way behind on digest reading and, yes, knitting too. Several weeks ago I submitted my "Unscrappy Afghan" pattern to Sarah in Australia for this year's gift list - without a photo. I finally took a picture of the (half-finished) afghan, finished off the roll of film, and just brought it in to be developed. CVS drug store, where I had not dropped off film before, has a service now (I wasn't aware of it, but perhaps many of you already are) where instead of double prints you can choose single prints plus prints on-line. So, Sarah, hopefully I'll have an electronic photo to send you soon to insert into the pattern on your site without my having to scan the photo at my office. Sarah has always been a generous giver to this community. I haven't unpacked the stash yet (except for current projects), but did buy six clear 60-gallon tubs at Wal-mart to organize and store it. Hopefully, this project will get accomplished this week. I've got a "decadent" amount of storage space here - a huge empty finished basement and my stash is pretty paltry compared to some of you. As I mentioned, I am quite behind in digest reading, but did do a little catch-up yesterday. Just wanted to let Jennifer Tocker know I enjoyed visiting her web-site, although I didn't leave any "yarnaholic confessions." I was also touched by the story from Alison (I think) about the anxious wait at the airport for her daughter and the thankfully happy ending. This is something I am sure all of us parents can easily relate to - worrying about our children and the comfort of knitting. I also wanted join many others in extending a public thank-you to Flor in Brazil for her gracious generosity in sharing with others. Flor has come to my "rescue" several times before in providing exactly what I needed in my request to the list. Most recently, my 3 year old granddaughter had requested a hat with hearts and diamonds. I queried this list and, within hours, received the perfect chart from Flor for this project. And, if this were not enough, she later re-scanned it and re-sent it to me so that I could have a larger and clearer copy. Flor, I completed the hat - it is absolutely adorable and exactly fits the ordered specifications. In my haste, though, I gave it to Maddie and forgot to photograph it. But I will definitely get a picture the next opportunity because I'd love to send you a copy. WIPS - the aforementioned Unscrappy Afghan - only about 1/2 done so far (I'm aiming for 6 feet long). This is my computer knitting. Also matching mittens to the aforementioned hearts and diamonds hat - only I think I'm just going to duplicate stitch one large heart on the back of each. This is my first pair of mittens and fairisle stranding on 4 needles seems too complicated to undertake right now. Lastly, I am just finishing the final decreases on the yoke of Meg Swanson's Sweater in Four Parts from Knitter's Magazine. I'm rushing to complete this step before the arrival of the next magazine with the final installment. My challenge was to keep up the pace to meet each installment as it arrived and so far I've been successful. Good luck to everyone with their holiday knitting - as for me, I'm not doing any of that this year. I manage to put the pressure on myself in lots of other ways. Has anyone else ever been bitten by the Norwegian knitting bug? I am just about unable to think of anything else! I am knitting the black and white and a little bit red Norwegian stockings in a shorter form for my dad for Christmas and I practically can't put them down. And I'm working on a big sweater for myself (on hold for holiday knitting) with the same colors: mostly black and white with a bit of red piping and a red cast-on row. Wow! I also keep finding myself riveted to pictures of sweaters like this in catalogues etc. And my next sweater plan? The Norge 2000 ski team sweater....but I might draw the line and do it in the blue color scheme. Is anyone else just obsessed with this style? I've always been kind of interested in it but now it's all I can think about! I've been finishing things up again, and not a minute too soon! I looked at the calendar and realized I'm flying off to my parents' house in not much more than two weeks, yikes! I have a lot of things to knit first! I'm knitting a lovely throw for my neighbors who not only volunteered but *insisted* on taking care of my dog for the time I'm gone, and I'm planning at least a pair of socks and probably a hat and mittens too for my other neighbor who is coming to take care of my cat. I feel so blessed to have such good friends and neighbors! So of course my reaction is to start knitting. : ) We have an archaic registration system at the university where I'm teaching, in which all of the faculty have to sit in a big cafeteria for 3 or 4 hours and be swarmed on by students who want to sign up for our classes. I've been busy with work, vacation, family stuff, and in between, my knitting. When I haven't had time to knit, the knitlist has been a fine substitute. Meredith, my knitting buddy, is also keeping me on track and proving to be a great buddy. This year hasn't been nearly as productive knitting-wise as I'd hoped, but I do feel like I'm continually developing my knitting skills and confidence, thanks, in no small part, to the knitlist. Recent FOs include the Lily Chin shawl modified with a garter lace border instead of fringe and the first in a pair of socks for me using a new-to-me lacy rib in my standard toe-up sock formula. WIPs are numerous, and UFOs have begun to accumulate. Yikes! How did that happen? ***Men's socks*** Current WIPs have been put on hold in order to knit socks for my DB for his birthday in 3 weeks. He's requested something in a sedate color and a sedate pattern. I want to use this variegated blue Wildefoot, which will be slightly less boring than the solid navy blue or black he'd suggested. Now I need to find a pattern. DB liked the 2x2 rib I've used for my DFs socks, but I can't really bear the thought of knitting 2x2 rib for his foot-long feet. Those of you who are men or who have made socks for men, can you suggest suitable stitch patterns for my conservative, 27 year-old, Marine brother's sock-yarn socks? I've scoured Socksx3 and the Folk socks books, but nothing has struck my fancy so far. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Hope all are well. I am knitting a cute FiberTrends child's sweater for my niece's boy, Max. He will be just 14 mos old when he come up here from Florida. The whole family will be here for Xmas Eve at my house and his twin cousins, Alex and Theo will be terrorizing us all. Can anyone suggest a quick, worsted-weight mitten pattern for boys soon to be five? I have some white and some rosy red Woolease. Thought I would crank out a couple of pairs if I could find a quick pattern. Am lucky to be knitting at all as my right shoulder is taking a down turn due to rotator cuff problems. Physical therapy has aggrevated it all so I may be seeking other remedies. Meanwhile, I knit with an ice pack which keeps the damn thing from flaring up. I hope to do a few facecloths too. My friend, Jean Drinkwater, makes the most amazing olive oil and herb soaps that she sells in her little shop full of dried herbs and dried flowers, soaps, oils and candles. I picked up three large bars of her new Green Tea soap yesterday so I thought some tea-dyed cloths might be fun. Wish me luck and thanks in advance for any ideas on mittens for little hellions. The members voultarily contributed funds until we had enough to pay for the first year. The ads are okay if you receive the list in individual emails, but they are EXTREMELY annoying if you get the digest. I think many more of us here take the digest, as they're larger, than do a small list like the swap. I personally, would REALLY rather not do eGroups unless we, like my members at KnitSwap, are prepared to band together to pay for the ads to stay away. Of course, the price to keep them off doesn't change w/ the number of members, so it wouldn't cost any individual lister much at all! a buck from each of us would keep us ad free for years!! just my opinion. Of course I brought knitting along--several balls of cotton Kureyon yarn, the kind that changes color in long sections. I came up with my very own scarf pattern: on size 10 1/2 needles, cast on 25 stitches. Garter stitch until the scarf is as long as you want, slipping the first stitch on each row to make the edges neat. Cast off, and add fringe if you have leftover yarn. I made my scarves rather short, using 1 1/2 skeins for each. You'd think garter stitch would be boring, but the color changes keep it interesting, and the extra large needles make a pleasing lacey texture, very lightweight and stretchy. I finished three of them during the drive, then ripped apart a cotton sock that had a major flaw and completed that too. The only problem is, I keep thinking of more people on my gift list who would love one of these scarves, so I may need to make a few more. Luckily they go fast... My new Knitters magazine arrived today, it has a lot of small projects for quick gifts, plus some gorgeous sweaters. Haven't gotten my knitlist calendar yet but I am patient. Today was very exciting because we are finally finishing the addition to our house we started several years ago (and then ran out of money). When it is done, we will have a formal dining room overlooking the back garden, a large office where we can put all of our computers, and a family room. What luxury. - --marina _______________________________________________________ Tired of slow Internet? In fact, I think I've received more kind words from the knitlist on my probably-last-ever-degree-this-time-for-sure than I did in the real world. There were too many to reply to individually; so I'll have to content myself with thanking you all here so much for the warm fuzzies. It really made my day. Also, I have worked out the double decrease in pattern in the Zilboorg book. Knit the knit stitch in the colout the side stitch is charted for and all goes well. This is probably obvious, but I fear I am one of those who suffer from book-smartness. Ever seen the Larson "school for the gifted" cartoon? That's me :) FO: Pentagon hat AFO: Tam. Think I went a bit overboard with the colours though. Languishing: A fair isle vest which I love, but on 3mm needles in 3ply, with 340 sts to the row, it doesn't match up to hats for instant satisfaction. Anyway, it is TOO HOT! Isn't it nice to trade in a lace-and-cable addiction for a colour addiction every now and then? OKC Am working on a tumbling blocks vest for my partner with the leftovers from KF's kilim. I got a bit sick of intarsia so i have also started the painted trillium from Not Just Plain Jane Knits in creams, pale sages and deep terracotta colours. This is really interesting; one of the most fascinating knitting projects I have undertaken for a while. Every row is different. And for my mindless train knitting I have a toddler's version of the Sarum Tunic from Cabin Fever. Having done a tension swatch I realised I could make it using the same pattern, with one strand of yarn instead of the two you use for the adult version and the appropriate needles, and it is working out beautifully. My dgd will have a wee tunic to match her mother's. But really it is too *HOT* here for knitting (in the 90s and *humid*).
