Early Days
Daily Express '90 I definitely wanted attention. At school I needed a group of followers, but I got a real lousy group.
Wham!
Today '90 When Andrew and I started Wham! we had a very strong gay following and I still have it. I don't bother denying it anymore. I know what I am and so do my friends. That's all that matters today.
'86 Without Andrew, I couldn't have kept up the bright young thing image. It wasn't me, it was him. His personality was greater than mine.
Wham! Confidential '87 One month I'd be fat, fascist, homosexual, with a huge Georgian house somewhere in Essex. The next I'd be a lean virile Left winger.
Going Solo
Today '87 My personal ambition now is to become more successful worldwide. I want to reach the same level I'm on in Britain everywhere, especially America.
The Records
Chancery High Court '93 My reviews have never had any effect on my sales.
Chancery High Court '93 I do make a real point of looking to see where my new material is advertised, where it's placed in stores, that kind of things. I do make a real point of going in and looking.
Bare '90 'Careless Whisper' was not an integral part of my emotional development. It's sad because that song means so much to so many people. It disappoints me that you can write a lyric very flippantly - and not a particularly good lyric - and it can mean so much to so many people. That's disillusioning for a writer.
Daily Mail '90 Once free of the Wham! connection, my first solo single got me into real trouble. 'I Want Your Sex' was condemned by many and banned by a few. Not surprisingly, then, it was a success. But I still feel outraged by the reaction of a lot of people to that record.
Songwriting & Performing
Today '87 Even thought I've a big following, you always need to bring in new fans. I always write different types of records to attract new people and that's how my following is built.
Q '98 People have always thought my career has been incredibly calculated and premeditated but it runs along pretty well parallel lines with most people's careers, it's just that the decisions I have made personally have been tat much more ... correct.
'98 The audience wants me to be friendly and sexy, and a part of me responds to that. But another part of me just wants to play the songs and have the music heard. It goes along with the contradiction between my image and my music.
Q '90 You can't become an innovator. You are or you aren't. I'm not. That's why I have to concentrate on being a songwriter.
The Man
'98 I don't care what anyone says, I am not ashamed about the way I live.
Today '87 It's true that I've lived a wild life but my days of going totally over the top have finished. Generally, it's unfair of people to expect you to be anything but human. OK, I used to get drunk a lot, but I'm not the type of person who throws his weight around. I get drunk very harmlessly and I've nothing to be ashamed of in the time I really did drink, other than the abuse of my body.
The Sun '90 I was barred from Ascot racecourse when I turned up without a tie. They eventually let me in, but I was asked to stand at the back - worst thing was that I was wearing a £300 suit!
Bare '90 I never raised my voice to anyone on the whole tour. I never pulled anybody up. We had one member on the tour who got out of his brain on heroin a couple of nights and couldn't play, and knew he was almost out - was to tell him that I was going to trust him that it wasn't going to happen again.
Daily Express '90 Everyone has a sex life, and basically they are all pretty similar. I can have a laugh about some of the stories that are printed about me, but eventually you get sick of it.
News World '91 I'm quite self destructive. That's caused a lot of pain. You don't neccessarily fall for people you want.
Daily Express '94 I'm not an arrogant person, but I have a real inner confidence. I really am an optimist.

Well - more to come very soon *promise* ;)
