Willie and Jean Thomure of Trenton, GA, recently returned from
Harrisonburg, Va., where they attended the American Kiko Goat Association (AKGA)
annual membership meeting. The 10th Annual Field Day was held the
following day.
Held
June 3 at the Rockingham County Fairgrounds in Harrisonburg, the educational
program included presentations on various concerns of goat meat producers. These
included the latest fencing developments for containing goats by Kencove Farm
Fence, genetics and breed improvement by Dr. Phil Sponenberg of Virginia Tech,
and the importance of keeping records for the Kiko EPD (expected progeny
differences) program by Dr. Dave Notter of Virginia Tech.
The
event concluded with a benefit auction as well as private sales of
AKGA-registered breeding stock.
The Thomures raise Kiko goats in the Trenton, GA, area. The Kiko breed,
which originated in New Zealand, is a production goat known for its efficient
conversion of forage to meat, resistance to internal parasites and hoof
problems, and for its superior maternal instincts.
