About Myself |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
My name is David Twycross, I come from Troon on the west coast of Scotland. I became interested in cycling and more importantly the Tour de France when I was about ten year'sold. It was my father that inspired me to start cycling. He gaveme my first racing bike and encouraged me to use it.I learnt to cycle around the coast road's of Ayrshire where I learnt what a head wind was all about, it was also on these road's that I matured as a cyclist and trained to challenge for my first race win. It came at the age of twelve when I won a junior criteriom, it was a great feeling and one that I certainly wanted to repeat.At fourteen I start working part time in a wee cafe to save up money to buy my dream bike.It had crome fork's, Reynold's753 frame and Campagnolo corsa record groupset.After almost a year and alot of hard saving I could finally walk into the shop in Ayr and buy it .The first thing I did was to fit aero bar's and Look pedal's, at last I was ready for the time trial's.I won the first three trial's I entered and my Dad decided I showed perhap's take a bit of time off as I was on my bike more than I was at school , so I took a year out from racing and concentrated on schoolwork instead.I eventually got back into the sport after my O grades when I was more confident and physically alot stronger ,fortunately I was also still able to win .Within two month's of starting racing again I had my first sponsorship deal,it wasn't much but enough to buy new equipement.At the same time Greg Lemond was winning the Tour by eight seconds from Laurent Fignon,this inspired me to train harder than every before. I was cycling fifty miles every night after school, 150 on Saturday and the same again on the Sunday,I'd never been fitter.Then the unthinkable,I was out training in the pouring rain when as I was decending a steep hill road my rear mech. went straight into my wheel as I was changing gear.As a result I lost control and my bike went across the road and under a lorry,luckily my pedal's released and I came off onto the side of the road,but I had lost my sponsorship and by the time I could afford to start racing again I had lost all of my fitness.So regretably instead of riding in the Tour I can only watch from the roadside.None the less I have recently bought a new bike and I am beginning to recapture the reason's why I started cycling in the first place.I hope you enjoy the rest of my site and remember always to follow your dream's. David. |
