San Joaquin Valley Weather
This is an extremely sensitive area for agriculture. Sensitive crops such as Raisins and Almonds depend on weather that cooperates. A hard freeze can take out the entire citrus crop. A week of mostly clear skies in February is a necessity for Almonds and Pistachios. Half inch diameter hail can take out a cherry orchard. Raisins can be damaged by rainfall between mid-August and mid-October. Other seasonal crops can be harmed by prolonged wet or dry periods. Summary of Recent Weather
The winter was dryer than usual, but not as much as the previous two years. Temperatures were fairly close to normal and there were only two mornings with hard freezes.
My Personal Prediction for the April 2009
Until two years ago I was calling April the coldest and wettest month of the year. It will be much like the winter was with near normal temperatures and remain dryer than normal. Pattern changes seem to not last too long then it goes back into an offshore ridge with a cool and dry northwest flow over our area.
