With only the small budget of $300,000, Halloween busted opened with great reviews and audiences around the world that would always remember that certain theme song of Halloween. Halloween made a total of $50,000,000 making it the biggest independent movie ever. Alfred Hitchcock even thought Halloween was a very scary film and was at the time caught quoting "I checked my back seat of my car afterwards!".
With this much success, audiences knew that it would only be a matter of time before the sequel would show up. John Carpenter was strongly against the sequel though.
"There is no more story!" Carpenter objected. The studio and people with the rights to the film, though, pressured Carpenter to re-pen a sequel. Carpenter himself, did not know what to write. "I remember it was like 3:00am in the morning and I was sitting the middle of the night with a typewriter and six pack of beer and was like 'I'll make him......the brother..'"
Carpenter though did not direct the second Halloween. Instead, Rick Rosenthial stepped behind the cameras. It was rumored though, throughout the shooting Rick did not know what he was doing. Rumors flew everywhere that Carpenter himself had to come in and do some reshoots to the finished product.
Jamie Lee Curtis herself, claimed she only returned to show appreaciation towards Debra Hill and John Carpenter. "The second Halloween was awful, I only did it for the fans and for Debra and John."
Donald Pleasence it seemed had no problem returning at all.
Halloween II would open with under Universal's name and went on to make $25.5 million dollars. The gross seemed fair. Carpenter wanted Michael to finally die in this installment. If you watch the ending, it is nearly impossible for Michael Myers to come back, if he is a normal human being.
After Halloween II, Carpenter was once again pressured by the studio to pop out another Halloween film. This time around though, Michael Myers would not be included in the story line neither would Laurie Strode. Carpenter and his creators claimed that they wanted to make the Halloween movie series, different stories and different events that would happen in each film. That failed big time. Halloween III was booed out of the theaters by audiences. Many thought the Halloween meant Michael Myers. Some fans, though enjoy the movie itself.
