Akechi's father was a policeman too.  He became obsessed with trying to solve a big robbery case, and died in shame for having not succeeded in what he'd persisted.  His son, who bears the burden of being, well, his son, swore to finish his father's job to avenge for all the pain and shame their family has felt.
