Student Activity 2

Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to have the students personally and critically reflect on the author's use of symbolism and metaphor.  Besides the obvious use of cats and mice for Nazis and Jews, the students will be expected to explore different levels of representation within Maus, and will be able to explain the significance of these symbols.  Students should remember that this is a personal essay, and so the main focus will be on the students' reflection on the author's techniques.

Directions:
This is a reflective essay, however, the students should not be using any first or second person pronouns.  There should be a clear introduction, body and conclusion.  Any additional embellishment should be relevant to the focus of the essay.  The minimum length of the essay should be six pages.
