Purpose:
The
purpose of this assignment is to provide a connection between a student
and his/her family history. It should also emphasize the ability
of a student to express him/herself in a form other than writing.
Another main focus of this activity is to foster students' abilities to
work in small groups, and to hone their oral communication skills.
Directions:
The
students will each conduct an interview with an adult member of their family
(parent, grandparent, uncle, etc.) and get a story or anecdote about the
person's past. Then in groups, the students will collect their stories/anecdotes,
and from these stories will collaboratively create a narrative. The
groups must work together and a consensus must be reached on the theme
of the narrative. Once they have created the narrative, each group
member must design two frames which represent some idea from their narrative.
Upon completion, these frames and text must form a cohesive graphic narrative.
Color or black and white is optional, and there is a minimum length of
four pages.
