Dave Holmes: hey folks welcome back to 120 minutes. I'm dave holmes and i am joined by Harvey Danger.
D: you guys have a little hit in your hands with save it for later, an English Beat song.
Sean: yes, the english beat song.
D: very early song, early age.
S: yeah, its a good song, isnt it? i wish we'd written it.
D: how'd you get involved with 200 cigarettes?
S: um, a phone call was made, we responded and then we went into the studio after we went to the record store to check out some record albums from 1979-1981 those wer the parameters.
D: they gave you a choice of what you could cover?
S: oh, yeah. do you wanna cover a song from 1979-1981 and since that is a period we like a lot and sort of foundational for our music tastes we said yes.
EVAN: we took a lot of time after that reacquainting ourselves.
D: what other songs did you think of?
S: well, i have a list here of some of the..
D: THIS MAN COMES PREPARED!
S: well, the big one was wing that was the one i wanted to do. xtc, blondie, tod ruden, I'll just read the whole thing if thats OK. Flock of seagulls, Magazine, Joe Jackson, Roxy Music, new order, Gary Newman, Randy Newman, Cheap Trick, talking heads, stranglers, Elvis Costello, yaz, depeche mode, the knack, the kinks, jam, devo, fall, clash, billy joel, the embarassment, pretenders, gang of four , wire , kieva television, boyd oid.
D: so you listened to alot of records?
S: yeah.
D: what was it about save it for later that said cover me?
S: it was the one all of us cared about the least from a personal level at least, no no it was good it was like a song that wouldn't be sacreligious to cover for an mtv movie no offense. And um it was a good song and we figured we could do something with it that wasn't like what our other stuff was.
E: all those songs they really had alot of songs from that era have such a characteristic sound that if you take out that bands way of doing it then you've taken out the point of the song this song even more than other English Beat , like had alot of potential to be able to maneuver.
S: to be a harvey danger song its that timeless...
JEFF: morph it however you want it.
A: we morphed the living daylights out of it.
S: and that was really expensive as you know morphing.
A: not quite as that special effect where we spin around the...........
D: we've just seen your video for save it for later that was Evan Bernard .. how'd you get hooked up with him?
S: well although we had a lot of control during the music part of it but once the video stuff got it motion we were like hired guns and didn't have any say although we were lucky to get involved with him cuz he's amazing i didn't realize he'd made what I think is probably the greatest music video ever, which was that john spencer blues explosion video when we started working with him. against him.
A: the one with Winona Ryder?
S: yeah.
A: oh
S: really really good.
A: absolute genius.
D: how is it like to be in a movie type video where you're thrown into the actual movie?
S: we were worried about that but it was sort of obvious and they sort of make fun of it enough it wasn't actually like...
D: do you mean you werent actually there?! with the actors themselves?!
S: alas, no.
E: but we were in one of the greatest lofts ever as far as I'm concerned . it was a great apartment.
D: as usual you cant get anything like that in the city for less than 20,000 we still have much more to talk about with the guys of harvey danger a new record is being recorded as we speak
D: new record.
S: yes i thought i told you we didnt want to talk about that.
D: can you sneak in a little info..
S: maybe weve just finished recording the basic tracks and i imagine by the time its already i dont mean to spoil the illusion that this isn't live but the time this airs we'll be alot closer to having the whole thing..... so we've got bass n drums on the whole album cuz its a bass and drum album
A: we're on vacation now here in the background
S: we hope to be done with it by the middle of april.
D: for a release....
S: early summer
D: what can we expect any thing different?
S: uh,... eh... different and there fore exciting i think for us..
D: how so?
J: some loud, some soft, some fast, some slow.
D: fans will be pleasantly suprised ?
S: do we have fans?
D: of course you have fans.
S: um they will be i think its really good i don't mean to be immodest but that's the story.
A: GO FOR IT
S: we might as well promote.
D: do you feel the pressure to replicate your success.
S: well, no.
D: short answer.
A: except for the song were doing called flagpole schmitta.
S: flagpole 2G
A: flagpole 99
D: excellent wer going to have a video from the econoline crush from canada.
S: CANADA!
D: hi there and welcome back to 120 minutes im dave holmes , still talking with the guys from harvey danger . new album coming out this summer, any titles?
S: we have a big list of titles.
D: do you have another list?
S: (to aaron) did you bring the list?
A: i didnt bring the list.
S: my favorite right now, the leading candidate for me is "aint got no dog in that race" its an old southern addage.
A: but were doing some market research on animals right now, it maybe aint got no cats in that race.. maybe the kinds of cat people...
E: maybe the viewers should pick a title.
S: we dont want to alienate anybody.
D: will you be touring?
S: most likely unless we can get out of it somehow.
D: touring not a fun experience for you guys?
S: uh, its kinda fun but not really, its fun, its great playing the shows i certainly don't want to complain cuz you know we have a good time touring in a way.. but it's like the show is the highlight of everyday.
A: you spend everyday like this.. (makes a motion like hes riding in a car and its bumpy)
then you spend your nights like this (leans on evans lap and makes the same motion)
S: that sounds WAY more exciting than it actually was.
D: so we'll all pity you when we come to your shows .
S: no, no pity . but you know it was.. it was boring.. its no more boring than working at a job, the 8 months we were on tour but you know its boring.
E: which is why were going to have to go on tour with a really fun band cuz it's the other band that makes it...
J: cause were no fun.
S: were all just sitting around reading the bible until showtime.
D: thank you so much for being here you guys lovely to have you come back if you get the notion .. please anyone at home if you haven't. . please pick up where have all the merry makers gone....
