Chapter One

The silvery light of the moon shone through the lace curtains in the room. As he looked at the heavens, at the mystical orb, he thought of the peaceful quietness such a beautiful night should bring. Though the thoughts seemed pleasurable, reality had something different in store.

Jimmy lay in his bed, both hands under his head as the sounds of wild laughter and loud music resonated up to his room. The Wild Horse Saloon hadn't changed much since they left Sweetwater. The saloon still held fast to its ruckus reputation. The riders had experienced many wild and crazy times within her walls. Memories not easily forgotten.

Jimmy looked around the room. The soft beams grazed over the objects therein, highlighting them in such sensuous ways. His attention soon fell on the naked woman who lay next to him fast asleep. Her smooth buttocks gently touched by the silvery beams. It was as if those very beams made his surroundings surreal, making them look almost dream-like. He sat up on the bed realizing that sleep had fled him. Actually, it had never arrived.

"Wonder what Cody is up to?" he whispered. He stood, stretching his naked body as the magical light touched his perfectly defined parts. He reached for his clothes which had been scattered around the floor, quickly discarded during his romp with the brothel whore. She was beautiful, though not one of his favorites. All the same, she gave him the satisfaction he sought.

The clock in the hall resonated twelve dongs from its hollow wooden box. It was midnight. Seeing he was now wide awake, he would see what happenings were going on down below. He would first stop by Cody's room to see if his fellow rider would care to join him. After dressing, he strapped on his gunbelts, grabbed his signature black hat and headed down the hall to make contact with his friend.

Cody and Jimmy had ridden into Sweetwater together. They had decided to spend their week off, visiting their old stomping grounds. The Wild Horse Saloon being one. The boys had a mutual understanding. During their days in Sweetwater, they made it a point to cover for the other so that Emma, Teaspoon or Rachel would not find out about their many sexual escapades with the women there. It was a forbidden thing to visit a whorehouse seeing as Teaspoon vividly explained that such action would "bring disgrace on the company." And that was the last thing these angelic boys sought to do.

Cody liked visiting the cathouses in each town he happened to be spending the night in and got Jimmy into this most intoxicating of habits. Once James Butler Hickok got a taste, there wasn't much stopping him now. Though he would've liked to have a lady to call his own, romances were something that just didn't seem to work out in his case.

Reaching his friend's door, he lifted his hand to knock, when he heard the sounds of giggling women coming from the other side. "Oh Billy." cried one, while the other voiced, "Let me get a turn." as the sounds of her moanings were heard. Jimmy smiled. Cody was still at it, no doubt his hands were indeed full since he had secured the services of his two special girls. The sudden sound of the creaking mattress told Hickok it would be best to proceed along and so he did, shaking his head, leaving his friend to take care of business.

The noise level in the saloon was tremendous. The piano was playing as the saloon dancers performed their skirt raising, leg lifting dances, much to the pleasure of the half-drunken men in attendance. Boisterous laughter followed a scuffle that had broken out over a card game, sending a couple of the the trouble-making patrons flying through the leaved-doors. The smell of cigars filled the huge room as the bartender kept the drinks coming, satisfying the many vices on hand.

Jimmy surveyed the area as he walked down the stairs. From this venue he could see some of the old familiar faces and some not so familiar among the crowd. No matter what station in life these came from, they had all gathered here for one purpose, to have a good time.

"Yeap, some things never change." he said.

The Wild Horse Saloon had become one of the best stops along the Western route. The new owner had certainly increased the value of his investments. With beautiful women, good whiskey and constant gambling, it attracted a slew of men from all neighboring territories, making business quite profitable.

The barmaids hustled from table to table, filling drink orders and catering to the paying customers. The skimpy dresses they wore also made them a target for lusting, wanting men. Putting up with the slaps on the rear and the wandering hands came with the job, although in this saloon these were not considered whores, not yet anyway. They were in a way being trained to become the real money makers of the saloon.

Jimmy now took a seat at the bar and requested just a sarsaparilla from the bartender. After receiving his drink, he turned on the stool to view the crowd once again when he saw her. She stood at a table across the room, her tray in hand, serving drinks to the poker players seated there. Jimmy was taken by her beauty. He didn't recall seeing her here before, he definitely would've remembered, that's for sure, he thought.

The girl looked troubled, he noticed, a serious scowl spread on her face though she tried to hide it with faint smiles. She seemed out of place and the fact that she kept looking down on her revealed cleavage made that evident. After she had set the drinks in front of each respective customer, one gave her a bill which she promptly stuffed down her bosom. As she turned to walk, one of the men grabbed her by the waist, sitting her on his lap. The look of disgust on her was clearly displayed as the scruffy fellow planted a kiss on her neck in which time she quickly set herself free from his grasp.

"Hey sugar!" shouted a man from another table, "Two whiskeys." he ordered. She nodded in return and made her way at once to the bar. Laying the tray down with force on the bar she requested, "Two shots Charlie." from the barkeep.

"How you holding up?" he asked concerned.

"Barely...If I make it through this night..." she sighed.

"You will. You're doing great." he told her as he poured the whiskey into the small glasses.

"Then how come I don't feel so great?" she replied.

She had been standing right next to Jimmy. Her dark black hair was gathered in a long flowing ponytail at the base of her head, resting smoothly on her upper back . Her beautiful caramel complexion was flawless. Jimmy couldn't help but stare at her beauty. Her smooth neck and shoulders, her inviting breasts. He sat there, a faint smile on his face as he stared at her. Jimmy didn't mean to be rude and just stare, he just couldn't help it. She saw him staring from the corner of her eye and turned her attention to him. Her sudden gaze caught him by surprise and he turned away sheepishly. She looked at the handsome young man for a few seconds, not saying a word and quickly picked up her tray at the calls of the boisterous patron and turned on her way to serve the man.

Jimmy nodded at Charlie, the barkeep, inducing the man to come near.

"New girl?" asked Jimmy, as his eyes followed her around the room.

"Yeah, been here about a month or so." he informed.

"Is she?..."

"Nah." interrupted Charlie, knowing the question Jimmy was about to ask. He'd been asked the same on several ocassions ever since Spring set foot in the Wild Horse.

"When?" he inquired.

"Don't know." he shrugged. "But I wouldn't set my heart on her Jimmy."

Jimmy turned to the barkeep. "Why not?"

" 'Cause when and if she does, she'll fetch a mighty high price." he told him.

"And why is that?" Jimmy wanted to know.

The barkeep leaned in and said, " 'Cause she's a pure one. Ain't no man ever laid hands on her and you know them's the rarest kind. Yeap, she'll be fetching a mighty heavy price. And unless you're ready to cough up a couple month's pay and then some, don't even think about it."

"Well don't worry about me Charlie. I've been saving up." he said, turning to admire the young woman from his post.

_________________________________________________________________________

A couple hours had passed and Jimmy still remained downstairs in the saloon. He'd been engaged in a couple of hot poker games and had luck smiling on him this night. The saloon was now scarcely inhabited as the sounds of the once bustling room had now subsided into milder piano song and mingling voices.

"Hey Spring!" called one of the men at Hickok's table. "Get us a round of whiskey will ya? Hickok here is buying!" Jimmy smiled, shaking his head as he gathered the winnings from the last hand. Spring as she was called, stood from the bar stool where she'd been engaged in conversation with Charlie and waited for the barkeep to fill the order.

"I hate this. Having all those men looking and lusting after me." she shivered in disgust.

"Well just remember why you're doing it."

"I can't forget Charlie. It's the only thing that keeps me going." she was moved to admit.

"Well look on the bright side." he began.

"And what exactly is that?" she asked with raised brows.

"At least you've got one good-looking admirer from that bunch." he nodded.

"Really?" she asked somewhat uninterested as she glanced over at the table.

"Yeah, the young gun over there, James Hickok. Was asking about you." he reported.

"A gunfighter. Great. That really sets my mind at ease." she said unimpressed as she took the tray and walked to serve the waiting men.

"Gents." she greeted as she reached the table, setting the drinks down. Her look was very business-like as she felt the heavy stares from the table occupants. She set Jimmy's drink down last and her eyes met his. He smiled at her but she didn't return the warm friendly gesture. He set payment for the drinks and some extra on the tray for her. She looked down on the money and was surprised to see an extra two dollars on her tray. She looked at the young gunfighter but his attention had deliberately now been focused on the cards in his hand. Spring stood there wondering what his gesture meant. To her, there was a price to pay for everything; even small acts of kindness she eyed with suspicion. Something inside her though told her somehow she could accept it this time.

As she turned to the bar, one of the men at the table took hold of her arm. "You know sweetheart, you'd look a lot more delicious if you'd put a smile on that pretty little face of yours." he remarked with a sly grin.

"Let me go." she said calmly as she tried prying her arm from his grip. His hold tightened.

"Come on darling. Sit down, keep us company." he persisted.

"Let go of me, you're hurting me." she demanded but the man just laughed ignoring her plea.

Charlie, noticing his favorite girl was being hassled, sent for the saloon muscle hand to intervene but before he'd have a chance to, Jimmy took the duty upon himself.

"You heard the lady." interjected Hickok, "She says to leave her alone." stated the young gunfighter, staring down the older man.

"This ain't your concern Hickok." he responded with a frown.

"I'm making it my concern." Jimmy said directly.

"Well then I suggest you mind your business. This is between me and the lady."

Jimmy shook his head. "Not anymore. Now it's between me and you."

All of a sudden out of nowhere and without warning, the saloon bouncer took hold of the violator by the neck. He lifted the man, squeezing his neck tightly with his large hand. The feel of his throat getting squeezed and the lack of air he was being granted led him to release the hold on Spring.

"Baxter, now you know how Mr. Collins hates you puttin' your filthy hands on his girls. Have you lost your mind?"

"I-I was just just having a little fun Kurt, that's all." he managed to utter through his narrowing throat.

"Don't you ever touch Spring again." he charged as he threw Baxter into the table, gasping for air. "She's Mr. Collins' prized possession and she's off-limits!" he shouted. Then looking at the rest of the men said, "That goes for all of you's."

Kurt then turned to Spring who'd stood through the entire ordeal speechless. "Get upstairs." he ordered. "You're done for the night." She looked down embarrassed, her face on fire from the entire scenario. She felt dirty and used. Her eyes began to glisten from emerging tears.

"Now!" he ordered again and she obeyed, making her way to the stairs. Once at the base, she glanced over at the young gunfighter, seeing his eyes were fixed on her. Quickly turning away, she ran up to her room. Jimmy threw his head back, obviously disgusted, then shot Baxter a mad stare.

"Thank you Baxter. Thank you very much."

Chapter Two

The following morning Cody and Jimmy left their rooms at the Wild Horse and headed for breakfast at the Sweetwater Restaurant. "Sounded like you had a heck of time last night Cody." teased Jimmy after telling his friend he had stopped by his room but hearing he was quite occupied, didn't seek to impose on him.

"I appreciate that Hickok." he smiled. "I tell ya, those girls make a man's wildest dreams come true."

Jimmy filled Cody in on his late night at the saloon and on his latest fancy.

"They call her Spring. I tell you Cody, she's one of the most beautiful women I ever seen."

"Oh no." cried Cody. "What?" asked Jimmy.

"I know that look." he said pointing at his face.

"What look?" Jimmy asked, stopping dead in his tracks.

"That look!" he pointed again. "That glaze you get in them eyes of yours everytime you start fancying after some girl."

"I don't know what you're talking about." he said, brushing Cody's accussation off as he resumed their walk.

Cody followed after his friend. "You know I'm right."

"Cody all I said is that she was beautiful."

"Oh no you didn't. Your exact words were, "She's one of the most beautiful women I ever seen." I know you Hickok, when you start talking crazy like that, you're heading for trouble."

"Ain't you taking this a little too far? I ain't even talked to her." he defended.

"Hickok, we've been friends a long time. You can't pass that one on me." Jimmy didn't respond. "Okay, tell me this, would you like to get to know her better?"

He shrugged. "Maybe."

"Look Jimmy," Cody said, as they stopped right outside the restaurant. "I know I'm the one that's always falling in love left and right, night and day. Please do me a favor; leave it at that. If you like this girl fine, just don't be gettin' all attached. Have a little fun, a little sex, just please," he begged, "don't be gettin' serious. I want to enjoy my time off. Getting into these serious relationships ain't good for the heart. Take my advice. Simple is better." Cody knew his words of wisdom meant little. Once Jimmy had his eye set on a girl, it was like talking to a brick wall. He was going to pursue it no matter what.

_________________________________________________________________________

They sat down at the table and promptly ordered from the small menu: Bacon, eggs, biscuits and coffee to go along. As they sat there enjoying their meal, Cody especially so, since Jimmy was picking up the tab, he noticed the change in Jimmy's countenance.

The entrance of the two people, a young woman accompanied by an older man had caught his attention as he forced the biscuit down his throat. Cody looked over his shoulder as he continued to chew and smiled as his eye caught the shapely body of the young woman.

Jimmy swallowed hard, pushing the biscuit that was about choking him further down. "That's her." he whispered. Cody looked surprised. The girl Jimmy had described was nothing compared to the beauty that had walked through the door. Her ebony hair was pinned to the sides of her head as rows of soft curls draped her neck. She donned an off-the-shoulder flowered print dress, her cleavage revealed from the low-cut neck line. Her hand rested on top of the older man's hand she had entered with. The well-dressed, silvery haired man was greeted with a broad smile and open arms by the restaurant host, who promptly showed them a table for two not too far from the young riders.

"I thought you said she was a barmaid." whispered Cody.

"She was...last night." reassured Jimmy.

"She sure don't look like no barmaid I ever seen. Sure she's the same girl?" he asked unconvinced.

"I'm positive." whispered Jimmy directly, wiping his mouth with the cloth napkin.

"What is she doing with Mr. Collins then? I ain't never seen him in public with any of his girls." Cody pointed out.

"She ain't just one of his girls." informed Jimmy.

"Come again?" he asked puzzled.

"One of the men last night got too touchy with her and the goon at the saloon told us she was off-limits. That she was Collins' prized possession."

"Okay, that does it." Cody said emphatically as he threw his napkin on the table. "You ain't gettin' involved Hickok." He then pointed an inconspicuous thumb at the old man and young woman. "That is trouble."

"What are you talking about?" asked Jimmy, his brow withdrawn.

Cody looked at his friend perplexed. "Alright, tell me then...Why is she his prized possession?" Jimmy looked away, not wanting to reveal what he knew. "Level with me Jimmy. Why?" he asked again.

Jimmy let out a loud sigh. "She ain't on the selling block yet."

"So?" William responded deeming the bit of news as no big deal.

"She ain't a saloon whore; not yet anyway."

"And?..."

Jimmy looked down on his plate, not answering. "I'm waiting." Cody pushed for an answer.

Jimmy looked up at Cody and said, "Charlie told me she's pure."

"A vir-!" he almost shouted, but caught himself and lowered his tone. "A virgin?" he repeated. "This is just dandy Jimmy. Forget about it. Forget about her. You're liable to get yourself killed. Whorehouse virgins ain't nothing to be foolin' with. Those kind fetch a high price and we don't make enough to fancy something like that, let alone get your penis in one."

Jimmy grinned at the thought. "Let's just say you gotta have a talent for it Cody."

"Oh--I don't doubt it in your case. You have a real talent for gettin' into trouble."

"All I'm saying Cody, is that you don't know what your future holds. I mean, why can't I see myself with her?"

" 'Cause you ain't living in a dream world Jimmy. This is real life. You ain't laying a finger on her, and if you value the use of them digits of yours, you'll listen to the voice of reason...and you're not paying attention to a thing I just said."

"It's a challenge Cody and you know I'm always up for a challenge." he remarked as he looked at Spring with those glazed eyes.

"You're getting that look again Hickok." he warned. "Tell me, what are you planning on doing? Is it just the thrill of getting to her first?"

"It ain't that. I just wouldn't mind being with her."

"Well then you better take a number 'cause you ain't gonna be the first." Cody smiled wickedly at his friend as Jimmy shot him a disapproving look.

_________________________________________________________________________

"You've barely eaten anything." said Mr. Collins as he looked on Spring's plate.

"I'm not very hungry." she said solemnly.

"Well don't you worry. Martha'll be back tomorrow and we can dine at the saloon as usual. Besides, her cooking's much better. Now my dear, we need to brighten our spirits. You can't go around looking so forlorn all the time."

"What do I have to be so happy about?" she asked looking into his eyes.

Mr. Collins set down his utensils and glared back at her. She had been his constant companion for over a month now and her attitude towards him was still cold and distant. He was annoyed.

"Haven't I given you luxury? Jewelry, fancy dresses? Haven't I taken care of you in the most precise way?" he asked harshly.

"You do it not because of the kindness of your heart, but because you know that every penny you invest in me, you'll get back fourfold."

"Why you brazen hussy. Don't you think I could've made you a whore a long time ago? Yes, I do admit you are a valued investment, I won't lie to you about that. But I've come to care for you Spring."

"That is not my name." she retorted firmly.

"I'm sorry Jennifer. What would you like me to do to bring a ray of sunshine to your face?" he asked attempting to please her.

"I want to go home. I want to be with my family." Mr. Collins' face hardened. Why was she asking such a thing when she knew the request would be denied?

"I've already told you. Your family is dead to you. You either forget about them or I will make sure that their lot becomes a much harsher one, understood?"

Jenny closed her eyes and nodded, as her eyes welled with tears. She knew full well that Collins was a man of his word and he would see it through.

Jennifer McAllister or Jenny as her friends called her, had been a vibrant, happy young woman. She lived on her family's farm in Kansas. The eldest of three children, she was her father's pride and joy, loved and cherished by her mother. Unfortunately for the McAllister's their property came under heavy debt to the bank owned by Mr. Collins due to a group of vandals that raided their crops. Being the generous man he always sought to be, or at least thought he was, Collins agreed not to reposses the McAllister farm if they could pay-off the debt in a month's time. Conceding that such a vast amount would be an impossibility to pay, Jennifer offered herself in exchange for her family's well-being. It was a sacrifice of the greatest proportion. Collins agreed and terminated the debt against her family and she willingly left Kansas, never to return again.

She now belonged to Collins. Her life, her dreams were now fantasies she could now live in her head. He had taken all of that away. She figured the only way to escape this madness was to kill the old man but where would that get her? Not very far. A fugitive, a wanted murderer, a hangman's noose, those were the constant images that kept her company. She hated her life. There was no hope, no reason or desire to live. She knew in due time Collins would make her a high-priced whore. The thought of having sex with strange men; old, young, rich or poor, repulsed her to the very core of her being. Ten years from now she saw herself tired and used up. She wanted to die. Her one true friend, Charlie, always tried to keep her spirits up. Jenny trusted and confided in him. He had been the only one to extend her his friendship. The other women in the saloon didn't care for her much, seeing the attention and priviledges she garnered from the owner of the Wild Horse, Mr. Collins. They were jealous of her beauty, of her purity. They hated Jenny McAllister.

_________________________________________________________________________

It was evening. Eight o'clock. Jenny sat in her room, staring at the teary-eyed woman in the mirror. She thought about many things, how she missed her family, her horses, her home. She felt empty inside. A knock on the door broke her from her pensive state. Taking the picture frame she held in her hands, she quickly hid it under the mattress of her bed. "One minute please." she said as she straightened herself up. "Come in." It was Charlie.

"Hi." he greeted. She nodded. "Mr. Collins wants you downstairs in a bit."

"Tell him I'm not feeling well."

Charlie shook his head. He felt sorry for the girl and sought to offer a measure of comfort. "Jenny, I know this is tough for you..."

"Tough?!" she cried with a faint sarcastic laugh. "How could you know Charlie? How could you understand?!" she began to shout, the words sticking in her throat. "You still can live your life. I have nothing! Everything..." she began to sob, "Everything has been taken away from me."

Charlie took her in his arms, trying his best to console her. Jenny looked at Charlie like a big brother, a sort of protector, advisor. She knew he cared for her and so he did.

"Listen to me Jenny. You need to pull yourself together. You can't fall apart like this." he voiced, looking into her red eyes. "Remember your family's depending on you. You have to be strong...for them."

"For how long Charlie? For how long?" He gave no reassuring response for they both knew the answer. The only way she would be set free was at the price of Mr. Collins' life and right now, that price was too much to pay.

Chapter Three

Jimmy and Cody stepped through the swivel doors of the Wild Horse Saloon. Cody's face beamed with pure pleasure as he took in the thrilling sights before him. They soon made their way to the bar and ordered two sarsaparillas.

"How you boys doing tonight?" asked Charlie, placing the drinks before them.

"Not bad Charlie. Seems things are picking up pretty early tonight!" shouted Cody over the resounding noises in the room.

"Yeah, looks like it's gonna be another wild one." he agreed.

"Just the way I like it." added Cody, lifting the bottle up to the barkeep before taking a drink.

Jimmy stood at the bar, his drink in hand, scanning the room for any sign of Spring.

"Looking for someone Jimmy?" asked Charlie, noticing the deep concentrated look on Hickok's face.

"He sure is." started Cody. "He's in love with that new barmaid girl, uh--what's her name?"

Jimmy turned to Cody with a shut your mouth glare.

"Who Spring?" asked Charlie.

"Yeah, that's her." confirmed William.

"Is she around?" inquired Jimmy quietly.

"She should be down any minute." Charlie sighed. "Boys, let me give you a little advice. You can stare and gawk and fantasize all you want about her just don't be stupid enough to lay a hand on her. You know Mr. Collins. He don't take well to people damaging his goods."

"Don't worry Charlie. It's us." grinned Cody from ear to ear.

"That's what I'm afraid of."

_________________________________________________________________________

Jenny finally made her appearance right on schedule. She was met at the base of the stairs by none other than Mr. Collins himself, who greeted her with a kiss on the cheek. He commented on how beautiful she looked and she barely responded with a faint wry smile.

"Now my dear, I've got some very important business associates here tonight. I want you to be real nice to them." he told her privately. She glared back at him and smugly said, "Aren't I always." and turned with mild defiance, walking through the crowd to the bar.

Jimmy spotted her right away, a nervous streak shooting through him. She wore an all black saloon girl dress, the lacey sleeveless strings draping off her smooth shoulders. Her firm breasts pushed together, making for a voluptuous sight. Her ebony curls lay in two rows on the back of her head, a black ribbon choker adorned her neck. She looked stunning even though the transformation from the woman they'd seen earlier that day, had been a dramatic one.

Once she reached the bar, she asked Charlie for her tray, ignoring the stares of the two young men that stood next to her. Cody's eyes traveled over her seducing parts and he felt a bit aroused from the sight before his eyes. He could now see why Hickok had been smitten so quickly. Jimmy gave his pal a nudge, encouraging William to say something.

"Good evening Ma'am." he greeted with a tip of his hat. She looked into the blue eyes of the young blonde man next to her and was pleasantly surprised by their stunning beauty. She stared for a moment but quickly composed herself. "Good evening." she replied politely.

Jimmy nudged again, urging him to keep the conversation alive. He had gotten her attention. Cody shrugged at his friend not knowing what to say. She saw their boyish cajolin from the corner of her eye and was led to smile slightly from the corner of her mouth, though she didn't show much concern for the foolish boys.

"I don't believe we've met. William F. Cody." he smiled tipping his hat again. Jimmy pushed harder on Cody's back, alerting him to his presence. "I'm sorry, this is my associate..."

"James Butler Hickok." interjected Jimmy with his sexy smile.

Her eyes met with his and suddenly Jenny felt warm all over. The sensation was most unexpected. Feeling her cheeks turn red, she tried to hide the obvious sign by remaining somewhat cool towards the friendly young men.

"Nice to meet you." she simply said.

"We was wondering Ms..."

"Look!" she curtly said, cutting Cody off immediately, "If you and your friend know what's good for you, I would leave me alone." with that warning, she left their company and started to the table where Mr. Collins sat with his guests.

Cody let out an audible sigh. "Did I suddenly feel an icy wind blow through here?" he remarked. "Beautiful she is Jimmy, but cold as ice." he noted.

"She just needs the right touch to melt her." Jimmy replied undeterred.

"Well then, I wish you luck my friend, she ain't gonna be easy."

_________________________________________________________________________

The night passed by swiftly. The usual ruckus crowd gathered once again. There was lots of drinking, smoking, gambling and of course sex. Jimmy and Cody sat at one of the poker tables engaged in an intense game. One of Cody's favorites stood behind him, massaging his shoulders as he rested his head on her breasts. William loved the feel of her soft breasts. He had to admit, he loved the look and feel of women's breasts. They were one his favorite parts on a woman. Big or small he loved them all the same.

Jimmy kept an eye on Spring the entire evening. She smiled very little, her countenance always seemed to be weighed down by some deep dark trouble. Little did he know how right he was. He noticed too, that the only one she ventured to speak with was Charlie. They seemed to be good friends and he'd actually made her smile once. She looked so beautiful, so inviting as that smile spread across her face.

"Hickok, are you in or out?" asked one of the players at the table, snapping Jimmy away from her. He glanced at his cards and therein put a five dollar bill into the pot.

"Well that's too rich for me." said Cody, folding his hand. "I've got better things to spend my money on instead of giving it to you bums." he smiled devilishly as he grabbed his girl around the waist, sitting her on his lap. He followed with a couple of kisses on her neck making her giggle.

"Let go of me!" came the shriekish yell from the table across the room where Mr. Collins' guests were seated. The men were stone drunk after the intake of a few bottles of whiskey and jugs of beer. One of them, a well-dressed man, had taking a liking to Spring and had persistantly been laying unwanted hands on her all night, no doubt being egged on by the dares and laughter of his table mates. Mr. Collins was not present at the moment and neither was Kurt, the saloon bouncer whose responsibility it was to keep her safe.

"Come on darling. Don't fight it. You know you want it." he said as he pulled her to him. His foul breath wreaked of alcohol as it fell on her. Jenny grimaced with disgust as she fought to loosen herself from the fierce grip he had on her.

"Let me get a taste." said another of the men as he pushed his drunken partner away from the girl. Jenny, without a second thought, took the tray and slammed it against the man's face, and he stumbled to the floor. She turned to flee but another soon took hold of her by the waist.

"She's a feisty one. I like them spirited." he laughed, as he tried to couple her mouth to his.

"Let her go." demanded a voice from behind. The sound of the cocking gun halted the man's actions. He turned to face the gunfighter staring at him with a death dealing glare.

"This ain't your business!" he snapped as he held Spring by the arm.

"If you don't let her go, I'm gonna drop you where you stand." he warned.

The man wasn't intimidated. He stood toe to toe with Jimmy. The aura of mightiness he possessed, exuded from his cocky spirit as he looked with disdain at the peasants, as he deemed them, standing before him. He was young, powerful and very rich. How dare he be challenged by such low-life scum.

"Maybe you didn't understand me. Maybe you're dumber than you look." he voiced.

Jimmy gave a defiant grin. "The way I see it, the dumb one is the one with the gun pointed at him. Now...give me the girl."

He laughed. "Why do you care huh? She's just a whore!" he cried as he looked down on Spring, tightening his grip even more.

Jimmy said nothing. His eyes keenly focused on the men around him. The young man's hired gun reached for his weapon, after getting an approving glance from his boss. Cody drew his gun at once, aiming it at the hired gun.

"I wouldn't do that if I was you friend, 'less you're ready to go meet your Maker." The man drew his hand from his weapon at the threat. At that moment Mr. Collins returned, pushing his way through the crowd of people that had gathered around and demanded, "What is going on here?" as he reached the group engaged in the battle.

Mr. Collins' eyes were a fiery blaze as he beheld Spring, his prized jewel in the unwanted grasp of the young Jonathan Cole. He walked up to the defiant young man, staring him squarely in the eyes.

"Get your hands off her Cole if you value the use of those hands of yours. You know what the deal is. Hands off until after the bidding. You can't abide my my rules, I suggest you get out of my saloon this minute before I forget who you are."

Jonathan smirked and in mocking obedience said, "Yes sir, Mr. Collins, sir." He let go of her. "Just let me make it known to you Collins, I always get what I want. This little fine pearl you guard so closely," he continued as he touched her dark locks, "will be mine. I am a patient man and I will have her." he promised.

"We'll see after the bidding if you're willing to back that up." Collins retorted.

"Yes, we will." Jonathan gestured for his companion with a move of his head, as they pushed through the crowd and soon were out the doors.

"Show's over folks!" cried Mr. Collins as he gestured for the piano player to begin playing. The sound of music soon filled the saloon inducing the patrons to resume the gaeity that had been temporarily interrupted.

He turned to Spring and asked visibly upset, "Where the hell is Kurt?"

"I don't know." she answered frightfully.

Just then Kurt came rushing in. He had been busy with one of the saloon whores in a wild romp in one of the back rooms. Mr. Collins shot a maddening glare at Kurt as he made his way towards them. Kurt on the other hand knew he was in for it as he met the disapproving, angered look on Mr. Collins' face.

"I heard all the commotion. Is everything all right?" he asked.

"Where were you?" asked Mr. Collins, who couldn't wait to hear what sorry excuse Kurt had this time. "Better," he paused, "don't even answer that because I may just do something I regret."

"Sorry Mr. Collins."

"I've had it with your apologies Kurt!" he shouted. "Is-Is it such a hard thing I ask you to do? Huh? Keep an eye, watch out for Spring...that's all I ask and what do I find when I get here? I find her in the middle of a crowd of men, unprotected!" he cried.

"I'm sorry Mr. Collins, it won't happen again."

"You know Kurt, you're right. Seeing this job is too difficult for you to handle, I guess I'd better find someone who's capable enough to do it!" He took Spring by the hand and shoving Kurt aside said, "Get out of my way!" and led her away from the crowd.

Her eyes met with Jimmy's as she was whisked by. The grateful look she gave him made Jimmy feel he had done the right thing. Somehow he felt she needed him. Something in her eyes called out to him. He thought maybe he was seeing things he wanted to see. A million questions ran through his mind about her. Would he ever get the answers?

"So much for peace and relaxation." remarked Cody, returning his gun to its place.

Jimmy's eyes stayed on her as she was escorted upstairs by Mr. Collins. "How can I get to you?" he whispered to himself. He didn't know how, he just knew he had to.

Chapter Four

The next morning as the boys made their way from their rooms at the Sweetwater Hotel to breakfast, they were met by the desk clerk who delivered a message that had been left late the previous night for "Mr. James Hickok."

"Who is it from?" asked Cody.

"Don't know." replied Jimmy with a shrug.

"Well don't take forever. Open it up." urged William anxiously.

Jimmy obliged his curious friend. He opened the envelope and read the brief note that told him to meet with Mr. Collins at nine o'clock sharp in the saloon.

"What do you reckon he wants?" Cody questioned. As they started their way down to the saloon, Jimmy guessed that the old man merely wanted to express a thank you to them for their courageous deed the night before . They would find out that that was only the half of it.

"Mr. Hickok." greeted Mr. Collins with a handshake as the two riders stood at the table where he sat.

"Mr. Collins." greeted Jimmy. "My friend William Cody." he introduced.

"Does he go everywhere you go?" asked Mr. Collins looking at Cody.

Jimmy glanced at his friend and smiled. "You can say that."

"I like that. Always good to have a right hand man I say." he mentioned as he gestured for them to sit down. He inquired if they'd eaten breakfast and since they hadn't had an opportunity, he sent for food to be brought to them at once.

"I want to thank you Mr. Hickok, both of you for looking out for Spring."

"Was nothing." Jimmy replied modestly.

"Of course it was something son. I'm a business man Mr. Hickok. I have to protect my investments. Spring's a very valued asset of mine. I'm sure you've heard why so I needn't go into specifics."

Jimmy didn't particularly care to have such a cold image of Spring as he sat there listening to the older man yet he remained reserved.

"Well then you're welcome." he responded.

"Let me be direct with you Mr. Hickok." he said leaning forward. "I could use a man like you in my employment."

Jimmy shook his head. "That's mighty generous of you Mr. Collins but we've already got jobs." he informed.

"I know." he said easing back into his chair. "You ride for the Pony Express." The two boys looked surprised. "Don't look surprised. I make it my business to know what I can about anyone who steps foot through my doors. One can never be too cautious. You never know when an enemy may come calling."

The boys nodded, feeling that the old man had been around long enough to know what he was talking about.

"Maybe I can change your mind." he said, lighting the cigar he took from his jacket pocket.

"See, Charlie here told me," he began as he took a puff from the cigar, "and I trust Charlie," he puffed again, "that you came to the aid of my Spring. Now that's a pretty impressive feat seeing the odds were stacked against you."

"Well, I can't all the take credit. Cody here gave me a hand."

"Yes, but it was you Mr. Hickok, that took the initiative. Any other man would've let it be. Not you. I like your style and not to mention your speed with a gun." he said frankly.

"I never been proud of taking another man's life." he pointed out.

"Sometimes we're left with no choice." he said, holding the cigar between his fingers then leaning forward again began, "Here is my proposal: I need someone to watch over Spring. Wherever she goes, you go. I need someone to stay at her side. She's too valuable to me unspoiled and that's the way I want her to stay. The pay is good. Your boarding, food, clothing, everything will be provided for you and there are other advantages that come with the job...the girls. Any of your choice, except for my Spring of course."

"Sounds quite tempting I'd say." admitted Jimmy.

"Are you interested?" Interested? Of course he was interested! The door leading to Spring had been swung open, welcoming him with wide opened arms. All he had to do was walk through but, with all good things there's always an obstacle to overcome...the other job. They were only to be gone ten days. There was no way they'd get around that.

"I'm sorry Mr. Collins but we're due back in Rock Creek by the end of the week. Like I said, your offer is very tempting but I can't forsee getting extended time-off from my employer."

"But are you interested?" he asked once again. Jimmy nodded. "Then I'll take care of the trivialities Mr. Hickok. I will get you your extension."

"Before we make this final, I can't take the job without my friend here. You got something for him?"

"Sure. I can always use another good man." he said, looking at Cody. So does this mean you are joining us?"

"Looking forward to it."

"Marvelous." smiled Mr. Collins. "Mr. Hickok...Welcome to the Wild Horse Saloon." he said, shaking Jimmy's hand.

After a few minutes more spent detailing Hickok's job and Cody's assignment, Mr. Collins excused himself and left their presence to take care of business as usual as breakfast was brought to them. The variety in front of them gave them just a taste of the life, the good life that soon awaited them behind the scenes of the Wild Horse Saloon.

"Well Jimmy," said Cody looking at his plate full of food, "I guess this time your buttin' in did us some actual good. We're gonna be living large Hickok." he smiled. "And I can't wait."

_________________________________________________________________________

Mr. Collins sent for the town's tailor to transform the two young men from Pony Express riders to well-dressed saloon hands fitting his high standards. After the tailor was done, the change met with Mr. Collins' approving eye. He was a refined man and needed everything around him to be the best.

Jimmy was summoned to Mr. Collins' office later that afternoon.

"How are things so far Mr. Hickok?" he inquired.

"Can't complain that's for sure." answered Jimmy with a smile.

"Good. I'm glad. I've taken care of your little dilemma." he informed as he opened the cigar box on his desk. "The Marshal here has sent notice to your Teaspoon Hunter, that you and Mr. Cody would be detained in Sweetwater for the next two weeks on government business."

"Government business?"

"Yes. I know it is a falsity Mr. Hickok, but it was necessary, otherwise I'm afraid things would not have worked out for either of us." He lit his cigar.

"Why two weeks?" Jimmy asked curiously.

"I guess I'll come straight with you Mr. Hickok."

"Please do." said Jimmy with a slight frown.

"In two weeks, I'm putting Spring on the bidding block. I know it may sound barbaric but business is business. They're lots of men that are willing to pay top dollar to delight in such a pure, beautiful thing. Have you ever been with an untouched woman Mr. Hickok?"

"No. Can't say I have." Jimmy was disgusted by the mere conversation he was made to participate in seeing that Spring was the focal point of it all.

"It is the most savory, intoxicating thing a man, if ever fortunate enough, will ever experience in his life. The thought itself is quite alluring if I do say so myself. That allure, Mr. Hickok, is why in two weeks time, I will be extending the opportunity for the highest bidder to be the first with Spring. It's a fine venture. I forsee it will be a very successful one indeed." he ended with a wicked grin as he clenched the cigar between his teeth.

Jimmy's heart wrenched with anger inside. How could this sort of thing happen? He could now begin to understand why Spring looked so sad and lost all the time. Her life, her feelings were of little account. She was being treated like a young mare for sale. What would he be able to do to help her?

A knock on the door interrupted the conversation between the two men. It was Spring. She had also been summoned by the saloon owner to meet in his office. She entered, donning a beautiful rose-colored fitted dress, a gold locket hung around her neck, drawing attention to her breasts. Jimmy's heart leapt as soon as he saw her. Her manner was innocent, lady-like yet her countenance was unchanged. The saddened look in her eyes was the determining factor.

"My dear, you look as radiant as ever." greeted the old man as he took her hand.

"You sent for me?" she asked mildly.

"Yes. I want you to meet your new attendant. Mr. James Hickok." Her attention turned to Jimmy. He was very handsome she thought. He wore a black jacket and pants, along with a white shirt under a tapestry black/greyish vest, a black tie and hat. His ivory handled navy colts rested on his hips and she found the sight of him quite appealing.

"Ma'am." he tipped his hat greeting her. She didn't let on to the pleasure she felt seeing him there and turned coldly back to Mr. Collins and asked, "Where is Kurt?"

"Kurt is no longer responsible for you. That, is Mr. Hickok's duty now and I expect you to be cooperative." he sternly told her.

"Why? Are you afraid I'm going to run off?! You already know I'm trapped here. There is no place for me to go." her tone was harsh.

Jimmy stood there becoming disturbed by her allegations.

"It's not you I'm so worried about. But men like Jonathan Cole make this a necessary thing to protect you. I wouldn't want you falling into the wrong hands."

"Oh that's right. You have to protect your investment." she said wryly. "Your little virgin girl. What are you afraid of? That I'm going to willingly give myself to some stranger to deliberately hurt you? Is that why I need to be shadowed and kept on guard constantly?! I am a living, breathing soul!" she said in a raised tone. " I have feelings, I have needs damn it!" she yelled.

"You will curb that tongue of yours." he retorted. "You knew the deal once you made it and you made it willingly. Remember, I don't need your soul darling, all I need is your body."

Jenny was filled with hatred and disgust inside. She turned from their presence visibly irritated and exited, slamming the door with force behind her.

"I apologize for that display. Spring tends to get fired up quite often." he admitted.

Jimmy wanted answers. What deal? Why would she subject herself to this life willingly?

"What was she talking about Mr. Collins?"

"It is of no concern to you. All I need for you to do is to keep her safe. Nothing else." he charged. "And Mr. Hickok, don't pry, it is really best if you didn't. For all concerned."

Early that evening Jimmy and Cody met just before the doors opened for the nightly crowd.

"Something ain't right Cody. I know she's being forced to live this life." he confessed.

"But you said she came willingly. If that's the case, there ain't nothing we can do about it." said Cody.

"Just keep your ears open. I want to get to the bottom of this. Like I told you, something ain't right."

Jimmy knocked nervously on Spring's door. He took a deep breath as the door knob turned. She opened the door to see the dapper young man ready to escort her downstairs. It was time for her to make her nightly appearance.

"Good evening Ma'am. Mr. Collins sent for you."

She gave no response, only shot a smirk his way and walked on ahead of him. The cold greeting he received from her was to be expected he thought. She trusted no one. Only Charlie. She certainly had no reason to take a liking to him at this point seeing he had taken a position with the man she sorely despised. Nevertheless through all the harsh feelings she was beautiful to him. He admired her curved figure shown so invitingly from the saloon dress she wore, as he walked behind her. Her shoulders were smooth and the complexion of her caramel upper back was cool, flawless. He longed to touch her velvity skin between his fingers, to hold her and comfort her.

A broad smile crossed Mr. Collins' face as he saw the two young people, his prized girl and the young gunfighter, make their awaited appearance. He proudly puffed his chest, feeling grand about the man he'd chosen to entrust his beloved Spring to. He greeted her as always by the stairs complimenting her on her appearance as was his custom, and charged Hickok to make sure things went smoothly tonight.

The evening did indeed go well. Jimmy kept an attentive eye on Spring, trying his best not to get distracted by the saloon girls he had become quite familiar with as they engaged him in conversation and at the same time showing their much friendlier side.

Jenny glanced over at her new attendant and found him fixed on her every move and when their eyes met, he made sure to greet her with his sexy smile. The night was soon coming to an end. The saloon was quiet now as Charlie bid farewell to the last remaining customers. Jenny sat at the bar, speaking to her trusted friend.

"Seems like Mr. Hickok did a fine job tonight, keeping trouble away from you and all." he noted.

"That he did." she said glancing at Jimmy, who after the long evening could finally relax, his feet propped up on a card table, his black hat over his face. "I don't know Charlie. The way he looks at me, those piercing eyes...he scares me."

"Who, Hickok?!" he cried in a tone only audible to themselves.

"Why do you seem so surprised?" she asked puzzled.

"Hickok's a good man. Don't let what people say about him bother you. You know, it ain't easy being him. The reputation he has no doubt'll follow him to his grave."

"He is a gunfighter, you can't deny that." she asserted.

"True, but he ain't never had to kill nobody who wasn't asking for it. It's a trying thing for a man to be faced with death at every corner. He's a survivor, just like you."

She sighed. "How do you know so much about him?" she wanted to know more.

"He rides for the Pony Express. His home station used to be here in Sweetwater 'fore they moved over to Rock Creek." he informed. "You know, I don't agree with a lot of things Mr. Collins does but I keep my mouth shut. This time I ain't. You can trust that man there with your life." he nodded at Jimmy. "He's as loyal as they come."

"Loyal to who?" she asked wryly.

"To you." he said forthright.

"What?" she was baffled.

"Oh yeah. He's had his eye on you from the first day he seen you. I know Jimmy. He won't let nothing happen to you."

Jenny had to admit she did feel somewhat safer with Jimmy. Why did he seem to care? Was it just his sense of duty or did he really care for her?

Jimmy escorted Spring to her room. Neither said anything along the way, neither did she make eye contact with him. Reaching their destination he politely bid her a good night and turned on his way when she finally spoke, her hand on the door knob, her face towards the door.

"Mr. Hickok." she called. Jimmy stopped just then and so did his heart he felt. She had actually acknowledged him. Her eyes stared at her dainty hand, her fingers gripping the knob. "I want to thank you for last night."

"You're welcome." he responded.

"Good night." she said as she opened the door.

"Good night."
