Colter
This story continues immediately after the closing scene of "A Noble Chase'.
As Jimmy walked away from Colter towards his horse, he couldn't help but smile. So Colter did have a heart after all! Although he had only given Chase one fifth of the reward money, the generous gesture had really surprised Jimmy. Then again, Colter was full of surprises
The past few days had been quite an adventure. He and Colter kept trying to one-up each other in their quest to bring in Chase and had both ended up on Chase's side, trying to help him. Chase had simply complied with their antics chuckling all the way. He knew the score. Jimmy mounted his horse and headed back for home. He did some thinking while he rode.
Jimmy hadn't liked Colter when they'd first met several months previously. He was perhaps even a little afraid that his life might end at the bounty hunter's hands. Now he was more afraid that they might become friends. Colter tested him, challenged him and amused him. He still wasn't sure which of them had come out on top in their little game. They had turned out to be a good team when they made the effort to collaborate.
The dirty tall man with the magnificent blondish red hair had grown on him and Jimmy couldn't deny to himself that he had purposely made it possible for Colter to escape and come after them again. That's why he hadn't tied Colter up after he knocked him out. The "chase" was the most amusement Jimmy had experienced in a long time. The fact that he had almost been killed only added to the thrill.
He though about Chase's question. "Are you happy?" Hickok could honestly say that in this very moment, he was. Although he was sort of glad to be rid of Chase, he couldn't help but hope he'd meet up with Colter again. Before he knew it, it was getting dark and Jimmy was only a couple of miles from Marysville, two towns away from Rock Creek. He decided to spend the night there and head for Rock Creek the next morning. He checked into a cheap room above a saloon. Although he was quite tired, he decided to go and get a drink.
The bar had about twenty or so filthy men sitting around drinking and although Jimmy knew he could hold his own, he didn't want any trouble and he noticed that his sarsaparilla/cheese sandwich order often provoked strangers to challenge him to a fight to prove his manhood. He chuckled, men were so stupid! He ordered a bowl of chili and some whiskey from the surly bartender. He wished he could do Chase's 'steak trick' and get a better meal but math had never been his strong point. He finished eating the lousy meal and was just about to head up to his room when a familiar looking dirty man strolled in though the bat wings. He looked around the saloon like he owned the place before he found Hickok's eyes and grinned. He swaggered over to Jimmy's table in a way that only a tall man can.
"I thought you were going the other way Colter," said Jimmy exasperatedly.
"What can I say Hickok," he drawled, "I can't get enough of ya, 'sides it's not a bad idea to follow you round, you're bound to pay off one of these days and I need the money," he grinned.
Jimmy shot Colter an icy stare which prompted Colter to shout him a whiskey. After all, he had just come into some money. Jimmy was going to protest because he didn't like to drink too much but he thought the better of it. They had a grand night drinking and telling each other what Chase had said when the other wasn't present. They also talked about crazy things that had happened in their own lives and they found out that they had a lot in common. Pretty soon Jimmy found himself completely drunk. The conversation ran its course and they were left with silence, for some reason, it made Jimmy uncomfortable. Colter reminded him of Brad, and he didn't want to think about how he killed his best friend. (reference to Chris Penn's character in 'Matched Pair')
"So are you happy Colter," asked Jimmy, trying to forget about his thoughts.
Colter chuckled at Chase's words. "As soon as I get me a nice little whore I will be. How 'bout you?, it's my treat."
"Well, you sure are generous these days Colter."
"Must be the whiskey doin' the thinkin' for me, so do you want one?"
"Nah," said Jimmy.
"Oh against the Pony Express rules, is it?" he said mockingly.
"Proly," slurred Jimmy, "but the real problem is my state of drunkard, drunkeneess. I probably couldn't get Jimmy Jr. to rise to the occasion anyway."
Colter laughed heartily at this remark. So Jimmy had a name for his too! In his laughter, he whacked Jimmy on the shoulder a little too hard and Jimmy went crashing to the floor bringing down his chair, the table and the glasses with him. Colter continued to laugh raucously at the sight.
The noise came to the attention of the barkeep and he walked over with a dark expression on his face. "Settle down boys, you'll have to pay for any breakages." Luckily, everything was still intact.
"Another whiskey," called out Jimmy from the floor.
"I think you've had just about enough mister. Why don't you go up to your room and sleep it off?". It was an order rather than a request.
"Don't worry, I'll take him," said Colter. Although had as much whiskey as much as Jimmy did, he had built up a resistance because he drank almost every night.
Jimmy looked up at Colter. The room was spinning but he could still see Colter grinning as his strong arms reached towards him to help him up off the floor.
With Colter's support, Jimmy mad it half-way up the stairs before collapsing on his knees. Colter then picked him up and threw him over his shoulder, almost buckling under the weight.
"Which room Hickok?" he yelled irritably.
"Twelve," answered Jimmy weakly, hoping it was the right number. Jake located the room and dropped Jimmy down hard in front of the door. He then fumbled around his pockets until he found the key. He opened the door and helped Jimmy up again and once they were inside, he pushed him on the bed. Colter then collapsed beside him, exhausted.
"Hickok, you're heavy and you're drunk. You really shouldn't eat so much or drink so much. I've heard of men choking on their own vomit you know."
"Well it's n-n-not n-normal to n-not eat," he tried to reply.
"I had me half a steak yesterday, 'sides. I'd rather spend my money on drinkin' and whorin' than eatin'.
"You gonna get a whore now?" asked Jimmy.
"Yup"
"Beforeyago, can you pull out the chamber pot?" he asked.
"Holy Christ!" exclaimed Colter before obliging. "You don't need any help with that do ya?"
"Nope," answered Jimmy. He'd rather piss in the bed than have Colter help him go.
Colter started to leave the room but he couldn't help but watch as Hickok tried to undo his belt. "Idiot," he chuckled, and left the room.
Colter went back downstairs, he hadn't even checked into a room yet. Then there was the business of that whore. All of the talk of food had made him realize he was hungry so he decided to get himself a meal first. 1 bowl of chili, three whiskeys and two card games later, he decided against the whore. He remembered he'd forgotten to lock Hickok's door so he figured he'd go and see how Hickok was. After all, he was plenty drunk.
He walked in the room and was greeted by the sight of Hickok's bare ass in the moonlight. He laughed because his pants were still on- albeit around his knees. His boots were still on his feet too. This man was giving him more entertainment than he'd had in a long time. Nobody would guess that he was a feared gunfighter. Colter had to use the chamber pot himself and as he did his business he looked at Hickok. He was quite a handsome man in a rugged sort of way. He found himself beginning to get ideas. Women were always in short supply out west and he was no stranger to men. He pulled off Hickok's boots and pants before removing his own. Although he was really in the mood, he decided that it probably wouldn't be wise to act out any of his thoughts without some sort of signal from Jimmy. He certainly wasn't going to get that as Jimmy was fast asleep. He was content to wonder about it instead. These thought quickly let to action and Colter grasped his penis and started to rub. The grunting required of the act woke up Jimmy who rolled over.
"Watcha doin' Brad?" he mumbled.
"What do ya think?" answered Colter, not in the least bit embarrassed. He knew that Jimmy would be used to this kind of thing because he lived in a bunkhouse with six other young men, one of them was probably named Brad.
"Want some help?" asked Jimmy.
Colter was stunned for a moment before replying. "Yeah."
