Above and Beyond
Brett M., Fifth Grader at Tremont Elementary School in Tremont, Illinois, was selected as the third place winner in the Illinois Reading Council and Illinois Council for Affective Reading Education Decal Contest. His design was selected from over 800 entries from all over the state of Illinois.  Brett's decal slogan was "United We Read"!  Brett says, "I came up with the idea "United We Read" because of the September 11th terrorists attack.  We need to be united in every way we can." This slogan was placed on bold red and white stripes of our nation's flag with an open-winged eagle in the foreground holding a history book of Illinois in its talons.  Brett comments, "I got the idea to do an eagle on the flag to represent what our country stands for.  I had a lot of fun designing this decal and I encourage others to try it too!  I'm going to do it again next year."

Brett was awarded a certificate and a copy of Richard Peck's book,
Fair Weather.  Richard Peck has been a feature author many times at the IRC State Conference in Springfield and is from Decatur, Illinois.

Congratulations Brett M.!  Keep up the quest for excellence!
